T his May, longtime Sponsors Kathy and Tom Lamont hosted a reunion luncheon in Manhattan for their current and past SSP students. Since the organi- zation’s founding in 1986, the Lamonts have sponsored six young women at Cathedral High School - one student at a time, for 22 con- secutive years. Five of their six students were able to attend the recent reunion, including their current student, Marlene Gutierrez (at left), who just successfully completed her sopho- more year. Several former students brought their spouses, as well as eight of their children, ranging in age from 2 to 12 years old. “We do our best to keep in touch individually, and this was a wonderful time to connect all the dots that have spanned 22 years,” Kathy said of the gathering. Though Tom and Kathy have always sponsored their SSP students together, Tom acts as the point person and lead academic coach. He is particularly vigi- lant during the girls’ freshman and soph- omore years, when they are making the difficult transition from middle school to a rigorous college-preparatory high school. In addition to regularly asking the girls about their academic progress, Tom stops by the school and occasionally sees teachers and administrators – some of whom he knows quite well by now. He can recall many afternoons when one of the Lamont’s SSP students would reluctantly report to his Manhattan office after school to do homework for a couple of hours without any distractions. “There’s always something else going on outside,” Tom recalls. “But I’ll call the parents and say, ‘Can she come to the office and study on such-and-such a day?’, and the answer is always ‘Yes, she can go.’” Fortunately, even though 22 years have passed since Tom read a Daily News article that led him and Kathy to SSP, the Lamonts are as dedicated as ever: “You can really see the students grow,” Tom says. “Needless to say, we are very proud of these beautiful young women,” adds Kathy. “Some are still in school, while others are working in the corporate world – and all while maintaining house- holds and raising families.” NEWS The Newsletter of SSP Fall 2008/No. 21 286 Madison Ave. • Suite 1601 • NewYork, NY 10017 • 212-986-9575 • Fax 212-986-9570 • www.sspnyc.org Kathy andTom Lamont Host Reunion Luncheon for ‘SSP Family’ Kathy andTom Lamont with their Cathedral Girls (from left): Marlene Gutierrez (’10), Georgia Ntoas (’94), Kathy, Mallorie Perez (’06),Tom,Aiyisha Daway (’98), and Joanie Diaz (’90). When SSP alumnus Henry Flores graduated from AllHallows High School in 1997, neither he nor hisSponsor, Dirk Leasure, predicted that their relation-

ship would continue through SSP. But since Henry’s graduationfrom Middlebury College in 2001, he and Dirk have sponsoredtwo students together – Jonathan Figueroa (All Hallows ’05),who now attends College of the Holy Cross, and ChristopherGaynair (All Hallows ’09).

As a student, Henry grappled with the death of his fatherand struggled to adjust to the high academic standards at AllHallows. Dirk became a role model, and later helped Henry getan internship at Morgan Stanley. “It was great to have someonewho’d already been through the process,” Henry recalls.

When Henry graduated from college, his internship lead to ajob, and he and Dirk worked together within Morgan Stanleyto recruit SSP Sponsors. But Dirk’s growing family left himwith little time to devote to his current student, and hebelieved that Henry was in a unique position to support theSSP students coming up behind him. “Having gone through theprogram themselves, [SSP alumni] have an immense credibilitythat another Sponsor will not have,” Dirk says. “The partner-

ship of young, recent graduates with older, more financiallyestablished Sponsors is very powerful.”

Dirk remains Henry’s trusted advisor, and both continuetheir commitment to SSP. “It’s easy to cherry-pick the smartestkids,” Henry explains. “SSP is special because it gives every kida chance.”

More than 700 students and Sponsors gottogether at this year’s annual SSP IceSkating Party in February. The event was

made possible by Credit Suisse, which generouslydonated the use of the ice rink at Chelsea Piersagain this year. SSP also held its Annual SoftballPicnic in Central Park this May, when nearly 200students, Sponsors and family members came outto play softball and enjoy the fine weathertogether.

Throughout the course of the school year, many students also took the opportunity toattend one of SSP’s “Bring Your Student toWorkDay” events. At these popular outings, studentstravel to their Sponsors’ offices and shadowthem at work for an hour before gathering forpizza. This is often an eye-opening experience forstudents, who typically are unaccustomed to acorporate office environment. SSP is grateful toCredit Suisse, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, andSandler O’Neill for hosting these very successfulevents this year.
