Hello MAGA members! What a great month of June withseveral MAGA events and the38th Curtis Cup Match! I hopeyou took advantage of theopportunity to visit St. LouisCountry Club and experience theCurtis Cup, it was a remarkableweek. I had the pleasure ofserving on the Rules Committeeand walking, as forward observer, for a match each day…it was a great experience. The talentof those 16 young women was phenomenal and a treat towitness first hand.

We conducted the final US Amateur Public LinksQualifying on June 14-15 at Aberdeen Golf Club. This willbe the 89th US Amateur Public Links Championship, andfinal as it is being retired after this season. Two locals, KyleWeldon and Steven Souchek, made it through and will playat Sand Creek Station in Newton, KS next month.

I always say US Senior Open Qualifying may be thehardest USGA championship to qualify for, this year provedjust that. One spot was up for grabs out of forty-seven (47)players at The Legends CC on June 16. Mark Gardiner, anamateur from Cardinal Creek GC at Scott Air Force Base, fired a fantastic 2-under par 70 to earn the lone spot. It isone of the most gratifying aspects of my job, to ask thequestion, “Do you accept this qualifying certificate to play inthis USGA Championship?” Congratulations Mark!

As we head into July the schedule just seems to continueramping up. The Metropolitan Open Championship will beplayed July 10-12 at The Country Club of St. Albans. Thisis going to be another fantastic event with Plaza Motors asthe Presenting Sponsor and another strong field will beshowcased. The championship will kick-off July 9 with theToro/JP Morgan Pro-Am and the championship commencesJuly 10. The full field will play Thursday-Friday beforebeing cut to the low 40 scores and ties for the final roundSaturday. I invite you to come out to St. Albans to see someof the future stars of the Web.com and PGA Tour, we haveprofessionals from 12 states currently registered coming toSt. Albans.

Wow…a lot happening over the next couple months.Thank you for your support of MAGA and for taking thetime to read The Metropolitan! We have received somereally great feedback from you, our individual membersfollowing each edition. As always, if you have any questionsor would like to see something in particular addressed in afuture issue, email me directly at [email protected].

IS THAT ONE CLUB LENGTH OR TWO?

Finding the proper place to take a drop is a commonsituation faced by golfers. It seems simple, right?Watch a PGA event on TV. When you see a RulesOfficial assisting a player, chances are it involves adrop. Do the pros make mistakes on ball drops? Youbet. One of the most talked about recently was TigerWoods’ improper drop in the 2013 Masters afterhitting into a water hazard. It eventually cost him twostrokes at a time when he was very much in contention.

When a player chooses the option to drop, howshould he proceed? If it is a penalty situation such asa ball in a lateral water hazard or a lie the playerdecides is unplayable, the player has multiple options. One option is to drop, not nearer the hole, within twoclub lengths from the present ball position for a ballunplayable or from the margin of the lateral hazardwhere last crossed (or from a point on the oppositemargin equidistant from the hole. Penalty situationsare the only ones where two club lengths relief ispermitted.

What about relief without penalty from:• An immovable obstruction such as a cart path or

other immovable man-made object,• from an abnormal ground condition such as

ground under repair, casual water or hole, cast orrunway made by a burrowing animal, reptile or bird,

• from a wrong putting green? In these cases, the competitor must locate the nearest

point of relief and properly drop within one clublength and not nearer the hole.

RULES OF GOLF CORNER

What common mistakes are made in taking a drop? One is locating the nearest point of relief. That is thepoint nearest to where the ball lies:

• that is not nearer the hole, and• where, if the ball were so positioned, no

interference by the condition from which relief issought would exist for the stroke the player wouldhave made from the original position if the conditionwere not there.

That may involve measuring to insure it is thenearest point. The player should then measure oneclub length and drop in the appropriate area. Theball must be dropped from shoulder height and arm’slength; not from waist high, not from head high.Provided the ball does not roll more than two clublengths, roll nearer the hole or roll back to wherethere is interference from the condition from whichhe took relief, the ball is properly in play. If the playerdrops improperly and plays a stroke, he is playingfrom a wrong place and incurs a two stroke penalty.

A player might have the opportunity to take a drop;maybe even several drops in a round. Droppingcorrectly avoids unnecessary penalties.

Anyone who has played the game for some time will surely recall when club manufacturers told us that to get longer teeshots we needed to hit drivers with lower face angles - often as low as 8-9 degrees! I drank the cool-aid and bought a 9.5degree Cobra, as I’m sure many players did. Now we’re hearing another story; raise the face angle (loft) to as much as 16degrees to generate greater distance! So, what’s up with this? Is it for real or are they just trying to sell us newer drivers?

TaylorMade’s new SLDR and SLDRs are the latest in hi-tech design for players. According to the manufac-turer, these are the lowest spinning drivers they have ever made while in the same breath state they have un-locked the key to distance by hitting the ball higher - with less spin - by adding more loft. They go on to statethat the ideal launch angle is 17 degrees with a spin rate of 1700 rpm.

If we go back to the early days of the golf ball, we know that to generate distance you need lift. Lift is createdwhen air flows over and under the ball, just like an airplane wing. Early balls were smooth and did not fly veryfar; but when they were “cut” this created lift, just as today’s dimples do on modern golf balls (The Magnus Ef-fect). Still, spin is essential to create lift; while we all know that side-spin (left or right) is the demon devil, gener-ating a slice or hook. So, creating a club that reduces spin will reduce the amount of side-spin and, ifTaylorMade is correct, the higher launch angle will do so without losing - and perhaps even adding - distance.Perhaps this is as much due to the COR of the club (coefficient of restitution) which has been the subject of dis-cussion in recent years. If it is true that TaylorMade has found the secret to longer, straighter drives, it will cer-tainly give it the edge in the market for a time. However, if they are successful, certainly more manufacturerswill follow suit.

The SLDR uses a sliding weight within the club to promote a fade or a draw while also moving the center ofgravity forward, going against the prevailing industry thought, which was low and at the back of the club.

The SLDR S metalwoods are aimed at the amateur market while the SLDR will continue to be played bytouring pros as they offer more adjustment options.

Finally, TaylorMade introduced its miniDriver in May with a 260cc head (compared to 460cc for the normalSLDR head). Justin Rose used one of these at the Masters during practice rounds and said he gained an extra 10yards when compared to his 3-wood.

So far, only Callaway is matching TaylorMade on the lofts above 13 degrees, making it likely that Ping, Ti-tleist, Nike and others are taking a wait-and-see approach to how quickly golfers jump at these new drivers.

DRIVER LOFT: A NEW TAKE ON THE ISSUE.WHY PROS ARE HITTING DRIVERS WITH HIGHER LOFTS FOR GREATER DISTANCE.

SENIOR OPEN QUALIFYING(continued from page 1)

spot in the Senior Open will certainly make thingseasier at home” Gardiner stated, “however, it’s alsoher thirtieth high school reunion, but I’m sure we’llbe heading to Oklahoma and not North Dakota.”

Originally from Maine, Gardiner traveled theglobe with the Air Force. “I never flew jets” hecomments, “I flew a desk.” Spending his career inan HR capacity left him time to perfect his game. However, in addition to golf, Gardiner is also anexcellent bowler. In 2004. he qualified to play inPBA event at St. Clair Lanes where he competingwith Pete Weber.

A week before the Senior Open qualifying, hemissed qualifying for the US Amateur Public Linksby a single shot. He learned from that experience inqualifying for the Senior Open.

Looking back through the record books for thelast amateur to qualify for the Senior Open, the listincludes the like os Jim Holtgrieve, David Estesand Don Bliss as amateurs who teed it up with thegames greats.

In the threesome with Brian Fogt and JC Ander-son, two longtime top professionals, it was the am-ateur who played the marquee round. Gardiner, who is deaf in his right ear, noted that playing withFogt, who also has a hearing loss, must have left JCfeeling like he was talking to himself during theround.

Despite putting it into trouble on the 13th andfinding more problems on number 16, his birdie atthe 18th sealed the deal...and the trip to Edmond,Oklahoma.

WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP(continued from page 1)

Despite playing very little over the past months, asshe prepared to lead the USA Curtis Cup Team tovictory in the just completed Match at St. Louis CCJune 6-8, Ellen paid close attention to her players asthe wiley veteran - with six USGA titles, eightMissouri Amateur crowns, two Curtis Cupcompetitions and a Trans-National title - sat backand watched her players dominant the GB&I team.

Telling everyone who would listen that once theMatch was over she needed to work on her game,Ellen posted rounds of 72 and 70 for a 2-under 142and a five shot win to claim her 13th MetropolitanWomen’s Amateur Championship at Forest HillsCountry Club and her first title since 2010. It wouldseem that some players, practice may be over-rated!

Defending champion Catherine Dolan, bouncedback from an opening round of 75 to shoot even paron her second round while Brooke Cusumano, sisterof Alex - who finished 2nd at the Old Warson Cupmatches in May - finished in third position. Thefreshman at SIU Carbondale - a two time stateindividual champion in high school - was unable topost a birdie in her second round over the demandingForest Hills layout.

Meanwhile, Dolan, for former Missouri Statestandout and recent qualifier for the U.S. Women’sAmateur Public Links Championship, was forced tosettle for a solid round in her effort to catch Port, who posted a 4-under 32 on the front nine toeffectively end the chase. A 2-over back nine justmade the result a little closer.

Port’s name will again be etched onto the Jayne M.Watson Trophy.

HISTORY

THE 1971 RYDER CUP

Old Warson CC was the site for the 1971Ryder Cup matches between the UnitedStates and Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I).It would not be until 1979 that the USwould take on a team from Europe.

Since the club’s opening in 1955, OldWarson had sought out a premier event.Having looked at a U.S. Open and a PGA, in1965 the PGA informed the club that the1971 event would be theirs.

Stars on the team would be householdnames: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, LeeTrevino, Charles Coody, Frank Beard, BillyCasper, Gene Littler, Dave Stockton, MasonRudolph, Miller Barber, Gardner Dickinsonand captain Jay Hebert. On the GB&Iteam, Tony Jacklin was the star, with PeterOosterhuis, Christy O’Connor and BernardGallacher other well known players.

The US won 18½ to 13½, continuing thedominant theme up to that time.

Using local caddies, two incidentsmarred the event, with each side sufferingequally. In Saturday’s singles, Dickinson’s14-year-old caddie, thinking a putt hadbeen conceded, picked up Gardner’s ballas it lay inches from the cup, losing himthe hole. In a Friday Four Ball match, Gallalcher’s caddie - and a huge Palmerfan - watched as Arnie hit a shot at thepar-3 seventh. Out of curiosity, the caddie- a Normandie member - asked Arnie whatclub he hit. The referee overheard thisand, despite protestations by theAmerican team not to enforce the rule, awarded the hole to the US. The next day,the GB&I captain Eric Brown was quotedas saying, “we not only have to defeat theAmericans, but the referees and our own caddies.”
