Kia, Daihatsu planning to enter India; likely to challenge Maruti's dominance in small car market Kia Motors, the Korean compact-car specialist controlled by Hyundai Motor, is quietly plotting an entry into India. With Toyota Motor-owned Daihatsu too planning its presence in India, this could pose a serious challenge to the dominance of Maruti Suzuki in the nation's small-car market. ET spoke to five people with knowledge of the India-related talks at Kia and Daihatsu. They expect the companies to launch products in India starting 2018-19. The Korean carmaker is set to announce its India entry within the next three to six months, one of them said. Maruti makes one in every two cars sold in India, with its new premium hatchbacks and compact sedans helping it hold the market share. But in the bread-and-butter small-car segment, it is already facing an assault from Renault's newly launched Kwid. With Kia and Daihatsu getting ready to enter the market, and Tata Motors planning a product onslaught, completion is set to become formidable for the maker of the Alto and WagonR. Daihatsu is conducting feasibility studies and holding discussions with vendors to understand the Indian cost structure, the people said. The Kia management, on the other hand, is busy negotiating with several state governments to set up a manufacturing facility. Kia is likely to select Tada in Andhra Pradesh as its manufacturing site because of its close proximity to Hyundai Motor India's facility at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. "Clearly the Hyundai Motor Group wants to garner at least a 20% share in the Indian market by 2020 and for that it needs additional capacity and more models in the volumes end of the market. The current environment presents the right opportunity for Kia to enter both with models and capacity," said a second person. Kia is likely to invest close to $500 million (Rs 3,400 crore) to build a factory with capacity to produce 3 lakh units a year. Partner Hyundai, which has a more than 17% market share in India, is likely to support Kia with engines and press parts, with Kia doing the painting, body work and assembly in house. This will keep the cost low. A Kia Motors spokesperson said the company is "continually evaluating potential locations for overseas manufacturing facilities, including India, to secure additional engines for future growth. However, as of now no concrete plans have been finalised." The Hyundai Motor Group is following its global strategy of locating Hyundai and Kia plant within a distance of 100-200 miles (160-320 kms) to enhance synergies and economies of scale. The distance between Tada in Andhra Pradesh and Sriperumbudur is 95 kms. Both Daihatsu and Kia have conducted studies to enter the market several times in the past. With global automobile market remaining benign and even the emerging markets of Russia, Brazil and China slowing down, India has all of sudden attained huge significance for global manufactures, thanks to the local auto industry's growth of 7-9%, which is the fastest in the world. While Kia needs a new plant in India, Daihatsu can use Toyota's facility at Bidadi in Karnataka.

The blueprint for Daihatsu's India entry is likely to be finalized by year-end. Naomi Ishii, managing director of Toyota's India unit, recently told ETAuto that the new understanding between Daihatsu and Toyota (by which Daihatsu Motor becomes a wholly owned unit of Toyota Motor) has opened up new possibilities of collaboration for various areas. "The impact of such a collaboration to global markets including India is yet (to be) known," he said. "However, we expect this would result into Toyota's intent of providing ever better cars which are best suited for each market." Kia, which sells about 2.7 million cars globally a year, has products like the Morning and Picanto which are suitable for entry-level buyers. The company is also working on new generation Rio platform, which will spawn out a hatchback and sedan and may be suitable for the Indian market, said industry experts. Daihatsu, which contributed over 1 million cars to Toyota's global sales, is also working on a new generation small-car platform for the Indonesian market and India is also likely to get the same car. The company has also explored the possibility of bringing in the Terios and Xenia compact utility vehicles. ET had reported about possibility of Daihatsu entering India in September 2015.

Caparo Group to expand its India presence with new automotive components plant Battling the meltdown in steel sector in the UK, Lord Swraj Paul-led Caparo Group is planning to get into new ventures in the US and also expand its India presence with a new automotive components plant. Paul, Chairman of the UK-based one-billion euro industrial conglomerate focussed largely on steel products, has just taken over a leading trailer manufacturer for an undisclosed sum that could run into several crores of rupees. The purchase of Manchester, Iowa based XL Specialized Trailers, a leading manufacturer of customised heavy-haul trailers for the commercial, construction and agricultural markets, marks the NRI industrialist-led group's entry into a new business arena. Caparo Group, which already has 30 plants in India, is now planning to set up one more automotive components plant in the southern part of the country, Paul said today. Caparo India, through its multiple strategic business entities offers end-to-end solutions in the design, development and manufacturing of automotive systems, assemblies, advanced composites, modules and components for automakers and engineering majors. The major clients of the group's Indian unit already include big names like Maruti Suzuki, GM, Ford, Honda, Tata Motors, Renault-Nissan, Piaggio TAFE and JCB. Paul said the group is also looking to consolidate and diversify in the US, where it has tube making plants at 7 locations, besides one steel fabrication plant and one steel warehousing and stockholding facility. Caparo is also working on a property development and hotel project in the US which would be ready by February 2017, he added. The project consists of office block, apartment building, parking area, retail outlets and a hotel in the centre of St Louis. Avtec to produce below-2L diesel engine in India Avtec, a CK Birla Group company, has obtained license from Peugeot Citroen to manufacture below 2000 cc diesel engines in India, a top official of the company told ETAuto. The auto parts maker has also got license to manufacture BS-VI complaint gasoline and diesel engines

from the DW series of Peugeot Citroen. Recently Supreme Court banned registration of new vehicles that of 2000 cc or above in the Delhi NCR Region till March 31. "We have started the work on the production of the vehicle and we are waiting for norms to come in being," Prabhakar Kadapa, MD & CEO of Avtec Ltd told ETAuto. Avtec is also looking a winning license from the European auto major to export the engine to eastern Asia like Malaysia and China. "We are also willing to get license to export these engines from India to countries in Eastern Asia," Kadapa said. India's Major Brass, Copper scrap prices shrink; MCX Copper edges up Major Indian brass and copper scrap prices shrank on Thursday, while copper prices at India's Multi Commodity Exchange settled slightly higher, after U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen stressed that U.S. interest rates would rise gradually, sending the dollar lower. The major brass and copper scrap commodities traded down on the Scrap register Price Index as on Thursday. The major brass scrap commodities like brass bharat accessories, brass chadripital desi, brass huny scrap, brass radiator desi, brass radiator imported, brass sheet scrap and brass shell 40mm traded down on Thursday. The major copper scrap commodities like CC rod LME ++, copper cable scrap, copper cathod LME ++, ACR copper coil 3/8, copper armature, copper mixed scrap, copper pat, copper shell 40mm and electrolytic copper strip 25mm showed a down trend on Thursday. However, the most active February copper contract on the India's Multi Commodity Exchange settled slightly higher by 0.20% to Rs. 304.75 per kilogram on Thursday from previous close of Rs. 304.15 per kilogram. Copper futures at MCX touched and intra-day high of Rs. 308.00 per kilogram and an intra-day low of Rs. 301.70 per kilogram during Thursday. Comments from the U.S. Federal Reserve's chairwoman, Janet Yellen, that tighter credit markets, volatile financial markets and uncertainty over Chinese economic growth have raised risks for the U.S. economy also undermined confidence.

Indian Scrap import market may follow the quietness in Turkish market Participants largely hold the view that the Indian scrap import market will likely follow the Turkish market lower, and is due a correction due to low demand. According to the Steel Index, the Turkish import market has been eerily quiet in early February, with trade coming to a standstill. Mills are re-porting tepid demand for finished steel in both domestic and export markets. Meanwhile, suppliers have been unwilling to sell at the level that mills are demanding thus far. It should also be noted that this buying behavior, where mills buy on mass in the space of a week and then drop away from the market for an extended period, has become commonplace in recent months. Things could change once the US domestic scrap market settles, with export yards in the country reportedly shifting high tonnages inland where better prices are on offer once freight is added.

US Shredded Scrap monthly average prices rise to $187.25 a long ton The monthly average of US domestic shredded scrap prices rose by $17.50 a long ton or 10.3% month-on-month to $187.25 a long ton (delivered Midwest mill) over the same period. With scrap volume constraints in the market, scrap dealers were unable to fulfil all of their January orders, therefore leaving steel mills with less scrap than they had anticipated. Mill utilization rates did however still rise roughly 5% during the month to reach 70% overall. Steel producers began to lower their bidding prices near the end of January, which was a welcome sign for those buyers who were struggling to fulfil orders as it resulted in scrap volumes increasing in the domestic market. There were again large regional disparities in prices as some had to pay significant premiums to bring remote scrap into their region as a result of heavy snowfall. With weakening demand in Turkey, East Coast scrap exporters are expected to be targeting mills inland for the coming weeks, thereby halting a potential supply-driven price increase that domestic dealers had been seeking.

SWEDEN - SIEMENS INVESTS EUR 21.4M TO OPEN FIRST METAL 3D PRINTING FACILITY IN SWEDEN German technology and electrical engineering giant Siemens has just deepened its investment into the 3D printing industry by opening the first manufacturing facility for the mass production of metal 3D printed components in Sweden. Not only is this the first workshop of its kind in Sweden, but it is also Siemens’ first official foray into the industrial production of metal 3D printed components. The total investment into the metal additive manufacturing facility, located in Siemen’s industrial plant in the city of Finspång, amounts to roughly €21.4 million. The metal 3D printing machines in Siemens’ new Swedish facility will be used mainly for the rapid prototyping, rapid manufacturing, and rapid repair of components for Siemens’ series of industrial gas turbines. Currently, approximately 20 employees are on site, ranging from operators to engineers. "With this investment, we can develop new and improved components and repairs, for example burner tips to serve our industrial gas turbine SGT-800, significantly faster. Using this innovative approach, we will shorten repair times from months to weeks. It is an important step in our ability to respond to the needs of our customers,” said Thorbjorn Fors, global business director for Distributed Generation at Siemens. In addition to venturing into metal 3D printing, Siemens recently expanded its two-decade partnership with Georgia Institute of Technology to improve additive manufacturing workflow and, prior to that, marked its first-ever entrance to the 3D printing industry by setting up the Frontier Partner Program to facilitate 3D printing startups. "Siemens is at the forefront in Sweden and the world of additive manufacturing in the development and production of advanced components in the metal to the power industry. This is a step in a long-term investment in this area, where we have not yet seen all the possibilities,” said Hans Holmström, CEO of Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery. “Through this investment, we are building up the skills and experience that can lead to new ideas and developments in the field.”
