Great Expedition

On the 5th of November, Year Six met John Theakston, a talented explorer. John told us all about the expedition he is joining in January. It is going from here, in England, all the way down to South Georgia, The Falkland Islands, and Cape Horn (where there are some of the roughest seas in the world!) to Antarctica.

Take One Picture

The National Gallery’s Take One Picture project once again captured the interest of our pupils and staff, as they produced some remarkable works of art in just two days, inspired by Seurat’s ‘Bathers at Asnières’.

Nursery: had trips down to Emsworth Harbour to look at the marina and subsequently created a magnificent collage of boats and water.

Reception: Used the idea of boats and water and created their own 3D models of various watercraft from junk. They added a bridge, printed fabric to look like the river and images of themselves swimming to produce a wonderful 3D diorama of a busy waterfront.

Yr1 : Combined all their efforts to produce a large textile collage which involved wool wrapping techniques to represent the river in the painting.

Yr2: After viewing buildings in Old Portsmouth, created their own drawings which were transferred onto fabric to create 3 large canvases representing our own waterfront.

Yr3: Produced 3 large multimedia collages reflecting activities by the water (picnics, sports and wildlife).

Yr4: Recreated 2 huge scenes from Seurat’s painting: one was a tiled collage of the scene observed by the artist and the other was an imaginary scene of what was going on below the waterline.

Yr5 : Went down to the hot walls and took lots of photographs of themselves posing in suitable beach attire. They enlarged the pictures and divided them into quarters, using different artistic techniques to add texture and colour before assembling them together again.

Yr6: Developed the idea of Seurat’s pointillism techniques and painted individual canvasses of water which were combined to form a huge abstract vision of Seurat’s original creation.

Rory’s Story of the Week

Rory was overjoyed to receive this story from Roman and a photo of his second cousin Lijun from Malta

Dear Rory During half term I went on holiday to Malta with my mummy, my granddad and my grandma. After a few sunny days on the beach, we visited Valetta the capital city of Malta. It was very interesting and we saw lots of beautiful buildings. In the gardens of the Grand Master’s Palace and Armoury we saw a fantastic statue of a lion. We wondered if one of the PGS lions had come on holiday too.

Nursery News

The Nursery’s ‘Take One Picture’ project is finished. It was inspired by our visit to Emsworth Yacht Harbour. You are invited to the Nursery to have a look.

River Scenes

The Reception children were very proud of their art installation created for our Take One Picture project. They printed river scenes, were photographed performing swimming actions and make boat models with junk materials. These were then combined to create the final Reception piece with an amazing visual effect.

Making a Point

For two days Year Six went dotty! Paints were dished out and the children learnt how to make patterns with one colour and the white of the page, producing light and dark shading and the effect of movement using only tiny dots.

Then they made colour wheels from the three primary colours and proved that you could make new colours without mixing. When they placed red dots next to yellow dots, the effect was orange… Amazing!

The next task was to create a 3-D effect by using colour tones to use light and dark shading. The children placed the dots on the page to create this 3-D effect successful painting houses and trees.

Now the children were armed with all the pointillism skills, they were ready to start on their canvas; each child had a

part of the river to create. Once all the children had dotted on waves, ripples and splashes, they thought about activities around the river just like Seurat’s painting and made their own modern day figures. The paints were put away and the felt tips were the medium used for this task.

Halloween Happiness!

On the night of Thursday 17th October the Upper Junior School Dance Studio was transformed into a Halloween Hall of Horror, lying in wait for the 100 plus witches, ghouls, ghosts and assorted evil folk to gather and enjoy themselves. Led by Mrs Simmons, a great JSA team decorated, baked and dressed up to make the event exciting, fun and full of Halloween hype! “Small Paul” disco was spooky and got all the children dancing non-stop. Lucy and Jevon were best dancers and Year 5 beat Year 6 in a 2:1 dance off. Fantastic food, wonderful costumes and magical music made this party one to remember! Thanks to all for their enthusiastic help before and on the night.

Jacqueline Wilson Interview

At the beginning of half term, we were lucky enough to interview Jacqueline Wilson. I felt really excited and a little bit nervous when I arrived at the Willis Room, but I soon felt less worried when Mrs Dean told us she was really friendly. When I went into the Willis Room, she reminded me of my grandmother because she was really kind. We found out some interesting facts, firstly, that she didn't have enough time to look around Portsmouth as she

really wanted to get back to watch the X Factor on television.

We also found out that if you want to write a good story, then you have to read lots and keep a diary as it helps you to write regularly. She told us that her favourite book is Hetty Feather and that her bad habit when she was younger was sucking her thumb. She also told us about her cats, called Lily and Jacob, and what they like doing. In Jacky's spare time she likes to walk around a park near her home seeing the deer. I really enjoyed interviewing Jacqueline Wilson as I love reading her books. By Emily Clark 6S

Toy Story

Year One had a very exciting start to the term on Monday as they experienced a visiting toy workshop. They were able to visit a Toy Museum and explored a variety of old toys such as kaleidoscopes, hoops, a whip and top and other toys which they might not have seen before.

The children then went on an archaeological dig, where they were excited to find a variety of relics and artefacts. In the afternoon, the children pretended they were in a toy factory where they were given the opportunity to make pecking birds, fishing rods, balancing parrots, puppets and spinning tops which they were able to take home. We all had a fantastic day and look forward to investigating toys back in the classroom.

Year 3/4 Choir On Monday 11th, 18th and 25th November please collect members of the Year 3/4 choir from the UJS site at 4.30pm. We cannot use the Rotunda and will rehearse with the Year 5/6 choir in the UJS hall.

IAPS Hockey After school on the last Thursday before half term, the U11 girls hockey team travelled to Millfield for the IAPS hockey tournament. The team had dinner at a restaurant, ordering a massive sundae for dessert! It was lights out at 9.30 to get ready for the early start on Friday morning. We had breakfast at 7.15, a full English to get us going. We travelled to the school and started warming up and checking out the other teams! Our first game was against Chafyn Grove who we beat 2-0, Poppy Herbert scoring both goals, one within the first 10 seconds! Our second game was against Taunton Prep, who we drew 1-1 with, Emily Curwood scoring a great goal. The game gave us confidence to go on and beat Queens College 4-0. We had some amazing defenders in Amy Scott, Hannah Rayner and Emily Parekh. In the same match Emily Curwood and Lottie Howard scored brilliant goals and Poppy Herbert scored a further 2! Our fantastic goalie Holly Fisher did not let a goal past in several of the games. Hannah and Amy's mums had both come to support the team and had made a banner saying, 'Go Go Go PGS!' which we stuck to the wall with bandage tape! We all refuelled and felt ready to take on Perrott Hill, winning 3-0, with Lottie, Poppy and me scoring 1 goal each and Grace Saunders setting up most of them, running her socks off up and down the

pitch, supporting wherever the ball was. Next we came to meet Clifton College, sadly losing 1-0. Finally, it was our last game, against Beaudesert. This would decide if we would qualify for the next round. Everyone was nervous and in the end we lost 3-0, finishing in 3rd place. Mrs Dossett and Mrs Evans couldn't have been more encouraging. We scored a grand total of 11 goals which we were all proud of. Mrs Dossett told us that it was the best hockey she had seen us play all year! It was a great experience and overall, the tournament was a huge success for our team. Thank you to Mrs Dossett and Mrs Evans for a wonderful day. By Anna Caldwell

U11C Hockey v Twyford The weather was terrible all day pouring with rain and we were afraid that the match would be called off. Just after lunch it started to sun and the skies brightened. The astro turf was really slippery, and everyone was enjoying slipping everywhere. In the first third it was 2-1 to Twyford. In the second third it was 2-3 to Twyford and then in the last third it was 3-6 to us. With Verity and Emily C defending, Grace T, Ahthini in mid field and Lucy and I up front we had a perfect chance of winning. The goals were scored by Daisy, Alia and Lucy. Unfortunately, there were a few injuries for Twyford’s team (a ball to the head and a wack on the shoulder with a hockey stick). We recognised some of the players from the last time we played them which was nice. By Daisy 6P

U9 Netball v Farleigh

On Saturday 12th October, the U9B netball team played Farleigh at Hilsea. It was a very sunny day so the team were feeling good. Farleigh were also feeling good and managed to beat us in the first 3 quarters. But the last quarter was won by the very tired out PGS team because we had been running around and playing hard. Well done to Susie Taylor for her great shot. We played well, sadly lost, but got cheered up by an excellent match tea. Thank you to everybody involved. By Alice Hudson 4P

U10A Netball v Farleigh After a noisy and exciting coach journey to Farleigh, we arrived and started warming up. As captain for the day, I then had to do the toss up – which we won. The match started and, after 2 quarters we were losing 11-0. Farleigh were very good at intercepting our passes. In the last half we fought hard to maintain possession of the ball resulting in 2 goals for us and only a further three for Farleigh. Maddy made some great interceptions and Lauren-Lilly and Lily each scored a goal. Maddy, Harriet and Ava tried really hard in defence but the Farleigh shooters were very accurate. Rosie, Izzy and Alice worked very hard in the centre court moving the ball from defence to attack. Despite the final score we had a wonderful afternoon and tried our hardest throughout the match. By Rosie Sambles

U11 Football v Stroud On Wednesday the 8th of October PGS hosted Stroud for an exciting match of tough football. Due to some injuries, the talented B team Bens got pulled up for a great opportunity to show what they’re made of. As soon as the match began, we saw just how strong our opposition were, scoring

within minutes after the kick-off, but PGS kept fighting. Despite some great defensive play by Rory and Tom, keeping us in contention for a win, we initially went 3-0 down. PGS eventually tired Stroud to the point of goal conceding moments, first with Alex darting down the middle, and I running down the wing we finally managed to get the ball in the back of the net. Soon after Alex scored our 2nd goal after a great attacking link by Rory and James. Jacob made some great saves stopping Stroud scoring for the rest of the half. Ben swapped with Jacob in goal, keeping things tidy allowing PGS to get ahead with Alex and I scoring our second goals. Unfortunately later on Stroud caught us on the break another with another 3 quick goals. Although Seth and Henry were working there socks off for another goal, we lost 6-4 but a great team effort and a match we can be proud of. By Imran Vloemans 6G

U8 Netball v Brookham

We arrived at Hilsea playing field and it was a miserable day. I saw some girls from my school in one of the netball courts so I knew which court we were playing in. As I walked I began to feel excited so I opened the gate and ran in to meet my friends and jogged round the court once. I picked up a ball and started to practise shooting and passing with Abbi-Mae, we also practised some double leads. Eventually the coach from Brookhams School arrived and the girls got off, looking a little bit nervous. We waited for them to do some warm ups, then as I was our centre I had to pick which hand a ring was held in, by one of the Brookhams girl’s hands. If I choose correctly I would be able to say which end we shot at, unfortunately I choose incorrectly so their centre got to pick. We then stacked into our positions ready to start the game Mrs Sheldrick blew the whistle and the game began. We drew our half of the match one all. The team was Heloise, Molly, Ashnah, Emilia, Sienna, Lola and myself. By Eve Tanner

U10 Football v Barrow Hills It was a windy day at Barrow Hills and ready for goals. U10 A’s B’s and C’s played. The A’s started off the scoring with a goal by me and then another soon after. Then Tom scored to make it 3-0. Somehow, Barrow Hills scored three goals out of nowhere to finish the first half 3-3.

Quickly Barrow Hills scored two goals early in the second half. Luckily Kirav scored to give us hope but Barrow Hills replied and scored to make it 6-4 with ten minutes to go. Amazingly Adam decided to score a free kick. 6-5. Just then Adam smacked a shot from miles away over the keepers head. It finished 6-6. Nice work guys. By Alex Bolton

HILSEA GAMES There will be games sessions for KEY STAGE 2 at Hilsea this Saturday from 0900 to 1000. Saturday morning games are voluntary. There will be football for the boys and netball for the girls.
