P B P R A N D O N N E U R I N F I G U R E S ( 2 0 0 7 )

The Audax Club Parisien is pleased to inviteyou to the 17th PARIS-BREST-PARIS Ran-donneur, the most famous long-distancerandonnée. Under the auspices of the Fédé-ration Française de Cyclotourisme andtogether with our partners, the Communautéd’Agglomération de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and the Ville de Guyancourt, we arelooking forward to welcome you on August 20,2011 and during the following days for one ofthe greatest experiences in your life as a cy-clist.

You will be among thousands of other ridersfrom all over the world who want to partici-pate in this mythical event in order to join thelong list of successful randonneurs who havecontributed to the legend of this Paris-Brest-Paris Randonneur.

All along the 1200 km of this route, you willmeasure the strength of your body and, aboveall, of yourmind. Youmay strive for a personalbest or simply try to finish within the timelimit; but you will always keep at heart thegoal to support each other and to enjoy thefriendly camaraderie that transforms thismonument of endurance into an authenticRandonnée.

It won’t be for any podium, nor for any laurels, that you will overcome extreme fatigue, butonly for the sake of achieving a fantasticchallenge, andwhen youwill eventually crossthe finish line, the magic thought of “I’ve doneit” will make you forget the longmoments you spent struggling with discoura-gement on the little roads in the countrysideof Brittany and Normandy.

Except for the eight areas around the controlpoints of PBP, you will have to be self-suffi-cient, but you will rarely be alone. In companyof fellow riders from over 40 nations you willenjoy the charm and the beauty of Francewhile pursuing the same goal all together:riding to BREST and back to PARIS! In this, you will be supported by thousands of spec-tators – or rather fans – who will cheer fromthe roadside. Finally, you will be helped byhundreds of volunteers throughout the rideand you will want to tell them how gratefulyou are.

As always, the future of this event depends onyour behavior on the road. Permits are diffi-cult to obtain; consequently, we urge you toobey all traffic laws and to always keep yoursafety and the safety of others in mind. Wealso ask you to respect the environment:please, don’t discard empty containers orwrapping paper along the roads!

In 2011, we will celebrate twenty years ofpartnership with the Ville de GUYANCOURTand the Communauté d’Agglomération deSAINT-QUENTIN-en-YVELINES. This com-munity has demonstrated its commitment tosupport bicycling across the board, fromracing to touring, including BMX and moun-tain biking. We thank them for the trust theyplaced in us by letting us benefit from theirfacilities and their competencies such thatwe can make this 17th Paris-Brest-ParisRandonneur into a great celebration ofbicycling.

Bonne route to you all!

In 1891, Charles TERRONTentered the legend of Paris-Brest-Paris by winning the first edition

ahead of 100 other entrants.

The ride was not organizedin 1941 due to World War II.The second PBP Randon-

neur started from thePorte Maillot in 1948 with

189 riders.

In 1951, under the direction ofPierre BONTEMPS, a strong in-crease in the number of ridersyielded 379 finishers. This wasthe last time professional cyclistsparticipated in PBP.

René MARTINEZ was at thehead of the two editions in1956 and 1961. Only 220 and179 participants, respectively, started from the café Auxtrois Obus.1956 certainly was the mostdifficult edition.Under horrible weatherconditions throughout, only155 arrived at the finish.

In 1966, Gilbert BULTE tookthe reins of PBP. He knew itwell, since he was the firstfinisher on a tandem (withLucien DETEE) in 1956 and

finished third (solo) in1961. The time limit was re-duced from 96 to 90 hours.

Starting with 1971, PBP was tobe organized every four years.Robert LEPERTEL remained atthe direction from 1971 to 1999,except for the centennial editionpresided by Jean-Claude MASSEin 1991.

In 2003, the eventwasmanaged by a

quartet composed ofMarie-Thérèse

MARTIN,Pierre THÉOBALD,Bernard WARIN andJean-Pierre PENDU.

The 2nd edition, ten years later, included foreign participants andspecified two categories of riders:

 Coureurs de vitesse (racers)Touristes-routiers (amateurs:

the predecessors of randonneurs).

In 1931, two organizationswere formed: one for the RANDONNEURSwho promoted free-pacedbrevets,

one for the AUDAX whopreferred to ride in groups, with the pace being set byroad captains. Therefore, thefirst Paris-Brest-Paris Ran-donneur goes back to 1931.

44 randonneurs completedthis first free-paced brevet of1200 km in less than the timelimit of 96 hours.
