Firstly, I am delighted to share with you thatthe hard work and dedication of staff andstudents over the course of the academicyear has resulted in a significantimprovement in A level and GCSEexamination results. 81% of studentsachieved 5 or more GCSEs at Grades A*-Ccompared with last year’s figure of 62%,and 95% of students passed their A levels. The 5+ A*- C measure including Maths andEnglish also improved to 45%,withaccompanying improvements in each ofthese areas. Our Gifted and Talented programmecontinues to provide additionalopportunities for students and we arethrilled that there has been a 53% increasein students achieving A* and A grades atGCSE and that at A level, the number of A* -C grades has increased by 30%.Congratulations also to the Year 10students who passed their GCSE Mathsearly with 63% achieving A* and A gradepasses and the rest achieving a Grade B.Wewish them every success as they study theiradditional Maths qualification inpreparation for A level.

We wish all of our Post 16 students whohave been successful in gaining a place attheir chosen university, and those who aretaking further qualifications, all the very

Some studentshave opted to take a Gap year and we verymuch look forward to keeping in touch, tracking their progress and inviting themback to Emmanuel to share with otherstudents their experience and expertise.Doread the account fromMatt Slater in thispublication of the Achiever; further articlesof Post 16 successes will be published inthe next edition.

Maximum marksfor Lauren

This was the comment of the moderator ashe looked around the Year 12 and 13 AS andA2 Art and Photography exhibition.Teachingand Learning was highly commended on itsability to enable students to develop theirown personalised learning, and boy, did weindeed have variety this year!

Lauren Allin’s final piece of Art scored topmarks across all of Edexcel’s Assessment Objectives. To some itmerely looks like 3 random bikes covered in sweets; to Lauren itwas her way of expressing how becoming an adult woman meansshe has lost some of the youth and imagination from herchildhood. Her concept was backed up with her in-depth studieson the theme of ‘Rhythm and Cycles’ set by the examining board.

Lois BrownYear 13,Aaliyah BrownYear 9and Harmony (Towera Kambona, LouisaNoruschat, Alegria Carlos, Safrina Henry –all Year 10) made it through, and after a

visittouchesstudents

Matt’s gapyear scholarship

Our 12 students were an absolute credit to the school. They had apacked itinerary over 5 days with plenty of opportunities tosketch and take photographs at famous landmarks including theChristian Catacombs,The Trevi Fountain,The Spanish Steps,ThePantheon, St. Peter’s Square, and The Coliseum. The undoubtedhighlight of the visit was the ornamental and famous SistineChapel in the Vatican. We all valued the trip immensely andwould fly back in a heartbeat to be amongst this busy, romanticand charming city.

Mrs Pearson,Head of Art and Design

I have always been really excited aboutGeography and I am hoping to study for a BAin Geography with International Studies atLeeds University, which involves studyingabroad for a year. In preparation for this Idecided to take a gap year, and applied for ascholarship from the Royal GeographicalSociety, who offer up to £4000 for Geographystudents to plan a gap year. I had to send off a

written application including some ideas of what I might want todo and reasons why I’d be a good candidate and then go for aninterview at the RGS headquarters in London. I was extremelyhonoured to discover I was one of only 10 students in thecountry to be successful in earning a scholarship! I later returnedto London to meet my mentor, and other mentees who had alsobeen given the opportunity to plan their gap year with RGS.

As a result I have planned to go to Norway for a fewmonths tostudy the effects of climate change in the Arctic Circle, see thefjords and visit an energy company. In January 2011, I will bemoving to Madrid for three months where I will be living with afamily and teaching English to their children. Later in 2011, I amplanning to go inter-railing around Europe with some friends. Iam looking forward to experiencing different cultures, gainingmore independence and getting used to travelling and adaptingto different environments. I may even learn to cook!

Taking a gap year is something I would recommend to everyone, especially if you are intending to study Geography at universityas it will make your application even stronger!

Year 9 student Esther Lowe has beendancing from the age of 4, recentlyfulfilling one of her dreams by dancingwith the English Youth Ballet in aperformance of ‘Coppelia’ at Nottingham’sRoyal Theatre. She took time out from herbusy schedule to talk to me about herdancing.

What types of dance do you do,wheredo you dance, and what standard areyou? I do ballet, tap, jazz andcontemporary dance at Gedling BalletSchool and I have reached Grade 7 (Grade8 is the highest). I have also taken part in‘insight days’with the Royal Ballet School.

How often do you dance? I train 5 days aweek for up to 3 hours at a time – more if Ihave a show.Dancing ‘en pointe’ (on mytoes) is the hardest of all and classesconsist of 3 hours of non-stop dancing, after which I have to bandage my toes tolet them recover.

That’s a heavy schedule. Why do you doit? I love it! It’s hard work but reallyenjoyable. It helps with discipline, strengthand memory. I also learn everything inFrench!

So what’s next? I am working towards anaudition with the Royal Ballet School as I’dlove to be a professional dancer. I’d alsolike to teach dance – or work with animals!

Andwould you recommend dancing toothers? Definitely!

The Sugden SportsCentre in Manchestermarked the English and final leg of the 4 NationsDisabled Badminton Championship series for2009/10 over the weekend of 18-19 April.Although the spotlight was on Britain’s Men’sWheelchair No1, European andWorld No 3 GobiRanganathan, it was Nottingham Emmanuelstudent Owen Kilburn who stole the limelight bywinning 3 Gold medals in the Men’s Singles Class1 & 2, Combined Doubles and Mixed DoublesCombined.Well done Owen—we’re all so proud ofyou and wish you all the best as you leaveEmmanuel to continue your academic andsporting career.
