Dear Members,

Growing up with parents who were both teachers, I always told myself that is one job I would never want to do. As some of you may already know; however, I’ve served on the public education committee for almost ten years now and have enjoyed going to all of the water festivals. There I teach future water professionals what we do daily to keep our communities safe and healthy; also what we do to keep the environment clean. It may seem like an extra chore, but well worth it to make the effort to encourage your local schools or civic groups to tour your facility. Most people have no idea what we really do, and I believe by inviting them for a tour and interacting with them, it will give them a real perspective.

Teaching can come in many forms and every one of us is likely doing it every day--whether we are teaching a new employee the ropes or a veteran employee a new way of doing things. Please keep this in mind every day as we continue to push through the daily activities.

On a final note, I encourage you to be safe out there! Spring is getting close, which will bring its own challenges. Slips, trips and falls will likely continue to be the most common safety issue. I’ve had my own share of them this last year--a knee injury (which required surgery) and three separate falls this winter due to ice. One required a hospital visit and as I left the doctor’s office he laughed and said, “Look out everyone--here comes accident-prone Aaron!” Stay safe, stay warm and keep educating!

Letter from the President Federation Delegate Report

February 2019 Federation Delegate Report

As part of my roles as a delegate to WEF, I am currently serving on the Operators Initiative Workgroup. This group is lead by David Poe from the Arkansas WEA

Below is some information from our Workgroup Charter.

WORK GROUP DESCRIPTION:This workgroup will seek to assist the WEF Operator Advisory Panel in its mission of promoting and supporting the professional operator through the development of promotional materials to support and encourage participation in WEF operator-oriented programs and services, including the Operator Ingenuity Contest. The workgroup will also assist in the Panel’s current efforts to survey Member Association’s on operator workforce development, assist in the review of existing operator training materials (both WEF and Member Association developed) to provide a gap analysis for content. The workgroup will also assist in other WEF operator initiatives as the need arises. This includes but is not limited to the following:

• Promoting:

o The role of the professional operator in the community

o WEF Operations Challenge

o WEF OWWLs

• Promoting and endorsing ABC Professional Operator Designation

• Passing along information for utility managers on how to support operators in the workplace

• Inform Member Associations about available WEF and other operator training materials

• Distributing operator-oriented articles for Member Association magazines

• Defining long-term Member Association operator training strategy working with OAP

• Investigate workforce development for future operators and living wage material to provide deliverables to Member Associations for distribution

This committee has developed three task groups that include Operator Ingenuity Award Program, Work Force Development and Online Wastewater Library. Currently these task groups are working on collecting data and preparing some surveys.

The key goal of this Work Group is to find ways to support the professional wastewater operator. There is a common theme of trying to provide the operators a means to promote their profession, assist with testing and various other items and follow very closely to the noted needs of the Nebraska Water Environment Association. I am looking forward to the outcome of the task groups.

If you have any questions, concerns or ideas for the work group, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks,

MIKE MILIUSNWEA Delegate

Executive Board

Dear Members,

The executive board met during the Snowball Conference that was held in Kearney on January 23rd. This year was truly a snowball conference with the weather causing some dangerous driving conditions and only two other board members and I were able to make it--although most were able to join our meeting via conference call. One of the topics discussed was the student mentoring program that had good participation and will continue to help students get some experience outside the classroom. Also discussed was service project possibilities and the invigoration of Students and Young Professionals, so please keep encouraging them to take an active role in our organization.

The board will again have a strong attendance this year at the WEFMAX Conferences. These conferences are hosted by local MA’s throughout the country and present great opportunities to receive understanding of common issues affecting all MA’s throughout the country such as membership, leadership, and other topics. I will also have the opportunity to attend a networking workshop titled Partnering for Mutual Success in Alexandria, VA, on February 20-22. I’m looking forward to this chance to learn how other MA’s conduct business and hope to bring back some fresh ideas.

We received an update to the social media platform from Brittni Yates who has taken this head-on and is doing a great job. For those of you who haven’t heard yet, the NWEA is making a big push for becoming more active on social media platforms. You can now keep up-to-date with what is going on in the NWEA and WEF on Facebook and LinkedIn--please search NEBRASKA WATER ENVIRONMENT ASSOCIATION and get connected.

In conclusion, there are many training dates and locations to choose from throughout the rest of the year—they are all listed on the NEBWEA.ORG website. We are continually looking for volunteers! If you are willing to help educate or contribute in any way, please contact me at [email protected] or any other board member.

AARON DRESSEL Nebraska Water Environment Association President

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome members that have stepped into big shoes to fill as Executive Board and Committee Chairs. As with any association, the vitality of ours is in active participation in events and committees. Thank you for volunteering your time with the NWEA!

Marc Rosso, Membership Committee Chair of the Nebraska Section of AWWA, recently attended the Membership Summit in Denver. He learned about strategic marketing and how most marketing/advertising and branding is done with how and what we do. Everyone knows “how we do” and “what we do.” Not everyone knows why. Apparently the best marketing is done with “why we do.”

Marc here: I know “why I do” what I do and that is because I am inspired by my creations. That is what gets me out of bed in the morning to go to do anything. How does this apply to NWEA, you ask? I think that if we know “why we do” the good business of NWEA we can grow membership and serve our existing members better. So why do I do what I do for NWEA? For me, beyond growing relationships, is that deep down I feel like I am part of a family. When I need something I can reach out to any number of members to learn a new trick, solve a problem or be supportive of an NWEA initiative. Everyone is different so think about why we do what we do for NWEA and try to do more of that. In the end, we will all see a better member experience.

Branding logos. Totally unrelated to NWEA but it was interesting. Has anyone noticed the arrow in the FedEx logo? Or the bicycle in the Tour De France logo? Amazon, A to Z. Check it out. https://mashable.com/2014/10/25/logos-with-hidden-messages/#5OUoWWS5vmqy.

That’s it for now. Keep up the good work, see you at Great Plains!

Respectfully,

MARC ROSSO AND JIM MAHONY Publications Co-Chairs

Meet the Board: Aaron Dressel

One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most about being part of the NWEA over the years is getting to know people from all corners of Nebraska and beyond. So here’s a little bit about me that you may not know.

I was born and raised in Rochester, MN, and have two siblings--an older brother who still resides in Rochester along with my parents and a younger brother who lives in Sequim, WA. My parents still live in the same house I grew up in with a small park separating them from the Rochester Public Works Department. My interest in public works started there and also developed from both of my grandfathers who both worked for public works departments and they told me the city will always take care of you.

After graduating from Mayo High School, I joined the Navy and served as a boiler technician on the U.S.S. Sacramento stationed out of Bremerton, WA. When I finished active duty, I completed my military obligation in the reserves serving in an Army National Guard unit.

I met my wife, Lisa, through her brother who lives in Rochester. After a short time, she convinced me to move to Nebraska because the winters aren’t as cold--although she neglected to tell me about the wind! We have been married 17 years and have two teenage boys--Christian, 16 and Jace, 13. They keep us busy with their many school activities and they also keep the refrigerator empty.

I enjoy restoring classic cars in my spare time and usually have too many irons in the fire.

1. Pick a team of people from your utility to manage the page. Each individual needs to have their own personal Facebook account. You’ll want at least two people to have access to the page, since you simply never know if someone might get hit by a bus. It’s a good idea to make sure that anyone who’s a manager is engaged with the page and has administrator access to it.

2. Go to facebook.com/pages. At the top of the page, you’ll see a green button that says “Create Page”. Click on it.

3. You’ll see two choices: “Business or Brand” and “Community or Public Figure”. Since your utility is usually seen as a “company” by most people (even if it’s city-owned), pick “Business or Brand”.

4. Facebook will ask you to name your page (typically, something along the lines of “Somewheresville Utilities” or “Gotham City Water and Sewer Department” will do).

5. Under “Category”, most utilities should choose “Public Utility Company” or “Water Utility Company”.

6. Enter your address and phone number, then click “Continue”.

7. Upload a profile picture. If you have a utility logo, this is the place to put it. You can skip this step if you want, but it’s really easy to step outside your front door and take a picture of the plant or utility office with your phone, and pictures make a huge difference in setting the tone for your page.

8. Upload a cover photo. Again, even a mediocre picture is better than nothing. A picture of your plant or a utility truck would be perfect here.

9. Your page is done! There are lots of additional steps you can take from here to refine and improve your page, but Facebook will nudge you to do them. Getting the page up and running is your first task, and once you’ve gotten over this hill, the rest is just a matter of practice and a little bit of effort.

NWEA would like to increase our community engagement and improve our social outreach efforts. The Communications and Outreach Committee (Brittni Stephens-Yates and Ryan Hurst) presented recently at the Snowball Conference, in which we presented the VALUE of SOCIAL MEDIA. Social media is not always an online distraction or a procrastination platform. While some may be addicted to their social media networks, it is one of the best ways to stay informed and deliver messages to the masses. In response to the audience feedback, below are steps of how to create a Facebook page for your own community or utility use!

2019 SNOWBALLS FOR THE SNOWBALL CONFERENCE

The 28th Annual Snowball Wastewater Conference was held January 23-24, 2019 at the Kearney Holiday Inn. For the second year in a row and only the third time in the history of the conference was the attendance affected by snow! After all it is called the “Snowball Conference”! The conference is cosponsored by the League of Nebraska Municipalities-Utilities Section and the Nebraska Water Operators Division (NWOD) of the Nebraska Water Environment Association (NWEA) a member of the National Water Federation (WEF). This year the conference attendance totaled about 240 with 192 operators in attendance. The past 28 years more than 6,968 operators, engineers, and wastewater related company representatives have participated at this conference with over 281 hours of recertification “relicensing” credit for wastewater participants. This year licensed wastewater attendees received 10.5 hours toward their wastewater relicensing and water operators received up to 5.0 hours depending on which sessions they attended (scanned or signed in on). Certificates were issued with wastewater hours but those with water licenses will need to view the credit hour list posted on the League’s website at www.lonm.org

This year the conference morning sessions included basic operations of a collection system, damage prevention and 811 proposed changes, liquids/solids interface measurement, value of social media, ABC’s of sampling, manhole rehabilitation, sludge drying, and smoke testing/troubleshooting. The afternoon session included the city of York water reclamation facility project, SCADA options/requirements, pump applications, sewer rate studies and a repeat of the session on damage prevention 811 changes.

On Thursday, January 24th, following the operator breakfast, Aaron Dressel and Doug Glaze provided NWEA and NWOD updates on activities of the association. Following the breakfast updates the morning sessions included an SRF funding update, an NDEQ round table discussion with the field specialists, update on the operation certification program and Lash Chaffin of the League provided an industry and liability update.

Speakers at this year’s conference included Duane Grasshorn of PeopleService, Jill Geyer of Nebraska 811, Chris Johnson of Gurney & Associates, Ryan Hurst of the city of Minden, Brittni Stephens-Yates and Michael Oneby of Olsson, Bret Melson of Johnson Service, Gary Wesselschmidt of Huber Technology, Mike Lucas and Randy Hellbusch of Nebraska Rural Water Association, Brent Peterson of HDR Engineering, Mike Larson of Larson Data Communications, Brian Gongol of Gongol & Associates, Aaron Dressel city of York, Doug Glaze city of Lexington, John Danforth, Mike McBride of NDEQ. A special “thank you” to the NDEQ field staff for the roundtable discussion session. This year’s conference adjourned following a session with Lash Chaffin of the League of Nebraska Municipalities providing insight on liability and water/wastewater industry issues. This year evaluations were given to the participants for input on how we are doing and for input for future training. About 25 percent were returned with some very good ideas on topics and speakers to help in the planning of future conferences. The input is greatly appreciated!

A special “thank you” to the Holiday Inn for providing excellent facilities and great food for the conference events. Once again, the meals were filling and delicious! A special thank you to the following companies (listed alphabetically) that supported this year’s 28th Annual Snowball Conference by providing exhibits, speakers and/or sponsorship, which always help make the conference a big success.
