For this Summer issue, DRAFT talks about Sports. In a season where the European Football Championship and the 2012 London Olympic Games set the mood, either you’re working out, or just hanging out, there’s no way you won’t look cool this Summer .From the oversized, football inspired, Isabel Marant t-shirts, to the couture version of the surfer girl in Givenchy.by Riccardo Tisci, sport is everywhere.

As for us, we invited the coolest kids in Berlin, photographer Lars Borges, who gave us a futuristic sporty vision of Sky Warriors. We talked about feelings, with the romantic version of a biker girl, presented to us by Valeria Mitelman. From Europe we flew to North Africa, and found the exotic Marrakech where getting sporty never looked so hot. Thank God, summer is here, and we’ll only wear our bright colored clutches, brought by our, one and only, João Ribeiro. Always on some fabulous journey to find the most hype and fabulous pieces, João also introduced us to the talented photographer, Mouhcine Ait Fares and Maella, a truly One of a kind girl.

We got inspired and headed back to sunny Lisbon, where THE FIGHT was starting.Steamy and sweaty, you’ll find the hottest looks to wear on the warmest days of summer. But you can’t forget to put your hands to work, so head to the SPORTS FIELD, where through the lens of António Nascimento and our fashion editor, Frederica Santos,  you will learn how to get stylish while working out.

But let’s try something different, pile your favorite white pieces on and start sword playing! Although fashion is cool, there’s nothing like a good illustration. Curious? Come inside, and let the Workout begin!

Carole started working as a freelance illustrator in 2010.After three years of graphic design studies, her heart finally chose the illustration path. Her universe is made mainly of pretty girls - pretty but not stupid - and of colorful ink spots that enhance her

illustrations with a bright touch of fantasy. Her minimalist and contrasting style has led her to work with big

fashion brands. She finds inspiration almost everywhere, but mostly in music,

people around her, fashion and the everyday life, that she tries to improves with her pencils and water colors.

This article could start with Aleksandar Protic’s bi-ography. And maybe it should. But it won’t. After all he may be from Belgrade in Serbia – his strong accent won’t trick you – but he is also from Lisbon – the city in which he stumbled upon 13 years ago. His clothes make him unaware of bor-ders and frontiers: They belong to the world, and not to cities. Wholeheartedly, he admits that loves both Bel-grade and Lisbon. Committedly, states that are not cities which influence his work, but music and art. He explains that by that logic he could live in: “Barcelona or New York, because Fashion is global not national”. He wanted to become a painter, instead he be-came a designer, but he always remained an art-ist. After all, it’s a matter of soul. He has a love affair, or in his own words, “A strong bond” with black. In fact his clothes don’t need much more; they don’t need bold colors or wild prints, they have Aleksandar’s unique cut and shape. Natural fabrics, like silk, will do the rest. Always driven by perfection, he always manages to give elegance and femininity a bold spin.Private, but warm, Aleksandar likes to keep his personal side to himself, but he can’t hide that he designs with heart. So maybe, just maybe, what sets his clothes apart isn’t just that inimitable cut, but also those raw emotions.

PRODUCTION PARADISE

Don’t Let Flash Hold You Back

Thanks to the widespread use of iPads, iPhones, smartphones and tablets photographers’ portfolios need to be available for a viewing anytime and anywhere. Beautiful flash website portfolios can be as outstanding as they like, but their incompatibility with these devices are limiting artists’ visibility to key buyers and photo editors when they are browsing portfolios either at their office or in a presentation. Not everyone is a web designer and this is where Production Paradise  comes in to help photographers be in front of their potential clients at all times. By delivering completely device-compatible portfolios to the people that matter, not only in a user-friendly manner but also with the added shine of a sleek and stylish magazine format, they get your work seen - anywhere, anytime.

Take the step with www.productionparadise.com. Don’t get left behind.

Photo illustrations for Print’s Regional Design Annual artwork. The issue is a survey of American design divided into six regions of the United States: the East, South, Midwest, Far West, Southwest, and NYC. The concept for the opener art was to create an identity for each region through use of stereotyp-ical objects that represent each region. The objects were gathered and spray painted white, and photo-graphed. Project in collaboration with art director

Alice Cho and photographsby Henry Hargreaves.July / August 2009.

SHOW

Photo illustration for RISD’s new Alumni magazine. The assignment was to illustrate the word “Show”. I designed the typography in the shape of frames and got them lasercut out of wood. I painted them white and hung them on my wall. I dressed up in a zentai suit (i’ve always wanted to use these in my work) and sat inside the letter “O”.

Either with an urban swag or with a more feminine approach sportswear is one of the huge trends of the season, and it

never looked so good. This spring/summer sport is notoptional, it’s mandatory.

BYLIGIA GONÇALVES

GETTING PHYSICAL

“THE INTERSECTION BETWEENFASHION AND SPORT MAY HAVE REACHED

NEW HEIGHTS THIS SEASON. BUT IT ISN’T EXACTLY

UNEXPLORED TERRITORY.”

Page 87: THEDRAFTmag 06

It was still Winter when we started planning this DRAFT edition, but we were already dreaming about those Isabel Marant, slouchy jersey, footbal t-shirts and with those Alexander Wang perfurated, and dark, bombers. It was clear that we had one word in mind: Sport! So for us it turn out to be a natural choice of a theme, as it emerged for the fashion world, back in September 2011, as a natural trend. Blame the Olym-pics and the UEFA Euro 2012, and blame fashion’s ability to reflect what goes on in society. Pedro Matos, DRAFT MAG’s Creative Director says it best: “It was inevitable not to talk about sports”.Most recently Kenzo, collaborated with Vans, and Missoni did the same with Converse. Those iconic sneakers: Era and Chuck Taylor, definitely got a fashion spin. And what to say about Chanel’s oh so athletic campaign for this Spring/Summer? We’ve certainly come a long way since Coco Chanel first used wool jersey, as an outerwear fabric, in 1916. When she made those cardigan suits, completed with elastic materials, she would never guess, that almost 100 years later, her brand would even have a Sports Accessories Line: Including surf boards, rugby and basketball balls, tennis rackets, and equipment fitted for almost every other sport you can imagine. The intersection between Fashion and Sport may have reached new heights this season. But it isn’t exactly unexplored territory, as our Fashion Editor, Frederica Santos, reminds us: “And what about René Lacoste, a tennis player, who created a now worldwide brand? Those polo shirts with his crocodile logo, made tennis look more appealing than ever.” And Lacoste, isn’t an isolated case: Back in 1837, the brand that now makes, probably the most wanted handbags in the world, Hermès, was founded as an horsey house. Then in the 1920’s when resorts and tanning were already trends between the upper class, the French brand got truly popular doing sports

clothing. But Hermès wasn’t alone: Schiaparelli and Jean Patou were doing the same. Back then, sports clothing still meant full body jump-suits. So by the 1940’s American sportswear came to the rescue. With her simplified (and shortened!) swimsuit, Claire McCardell was the first of a long line, which now includes names such as: Michael Kors or Ralph Lauren. And in much more recent times, who could forget those Miu Miu green suede, rubber soled sandals, from the 1999 F/W Collection? With their shoelaces, they were a true cross between sneakers and a heeled sandal. So in the middle of this spring/summer sports fever, it isn’t a surprise that sneakers are on the top of their game. From Miu Miu glitter-finish leather sneakers; to some cutout high-tops from Maison Martin Margiela; without forgetting the printed Mulberrys; the sparkling Louboutin’s; and of course those colored Marc by Marc Jacobs with a hidden wedge, sneakers are everywhere, and as it seems, on every brand. And with Stella McCartney being the creative director for Great Britain’s Olympic Team, this season there’s no way to hide from sport inspired clothing. Stella herself has done, in her RTW collection, a series of sophisticated and athletic dresses and jumpsuits. Alexander Wang, on the other hand, made biker chicks look cooler than ever, with bodycon dresses, slick trousers and zip jackets. In Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, surfer girls, became couture with iridescent sequins. While in Kenzo it’s all about the performance, in Isabel Marant it’s all about rockin’ the oversized. Rag&Bone gave us the coolest track pants, and Lacoste the most easy-chic, rugby inspired dresses. As for Proenza Schouler and Michael Kors, they kept it a homerun for the Americans. This summer, sport gangs are on every corner of each street. So choose one or choose many, get ready, get sporty and make sure you don’t lose the game.

CARNEGRIFFITHSCarne Griffiths’ artwork is born from a love of drawing and the journey of creating an image on the page. Work-ing primarily with calligraphy ink, graphite and liquids, such as tea brandy, vodka and whisky he draws and then manipulates the drawn line. After graduating from Maidstone college of art Carne served an apprentice-ship and worked as a gold wire embroidery designer for 12 years, hence floral pattern, repetition and flow play a large part in his work.Carne’s images explore both human and floral forms, figuratively and in an abstract sense. He is fascinated by the flow of line and the ‘invisible lines’ that connect us to the natural world. These may be considered lines of energy or spiritual connections between ourselves and our surroundings and his work is often an emotional re-sponse to images and situations encountered in daily life. These daily images are recorded in a dream like sense onto the page where physical boundaries are no longer important. Carne’s work takes us on a journey of escapism, often focusing on scenes of awe and wonder-ment, they offer a sense of abandonment to the artist and to the viewer an invitation to share and explore this inner realm. The violence of flowers series explores our relationship with nature further. It draws an analogy between our darker side and the deception and violence inherent in the plant kingdom that is often masked by their beauty.

Page 129: THEDRAFTmag 06

Do you believe it’s possible to know someone in five minutes? We believe it is. So we went to Morocco to get to know Maëlla, the designer behind the accesso-ries brand Maëlla One Of A Kind. She’s a french girl living between Amsterdam and Agadir, in the south of Morocco. She’s a girl who studied health and nu-trition, and that one day had Elite Model Agency knocking at her door. Until she decided do to her own thing: Now she designs clutches and accessories that yell sophistication, and are the proof of her cosmopolitan life.

1 > Always in your clutch>> I love minimalism, so the only thing that I need is my iPhone, cc, and a lip moisturizer from Labello.

2 > You are always looking for?>> The most original, and unique, acces-sories because for me that’s what makes the difference in an outfit. It’s that last special touch.

3 > Favorite materials, colors and shapes? >> For my clutches I use 100% python skin; Flashy colors; The shapes depend on my mood: they can be round, square, etc.

4 > Favorite shops in Lisbon, Paris, London, Amsterdam and New York?>> All the places where I sell my creations. Lisbon : Stivali Paris : ColetteAmsterdam : BijenkorfNew York : Mona MooreLondon : Harvey Nichols

5 > A good day is...>> Healthy food, a run on the beach, a funky outfit, a huge smile.
