    I am very pleased to introduce our new, regular magazine to you and hope you enjoy reading it over a nice cuppa. The Conveyor Magazine is designed to keep you updated with all the news and activities of the Finlay Group. This year has proved to be not only very busy with new product launches, shows and new personnel, but also somewhat unique given the political climate. We’ve experienced a very positive year sales wise, despite an almost 3-month pause in business created by the referendum. Since the result I am pleased to say it’s now business as normal. The road building sector is buoyant the recycling sector is stable and purchasing decisions have been resumed.

    Rik Kiddle, Sales & Marketing Director, Finlay Group

    We made this key appointment in April this year which highlights our commitment to the strategic growth of business in both sales and the aftermarket. Rik joins us from Terex Finlay, where he recently held the position of Global Sales & Business Development Director.

    With a background in engineering and design, Rik spent many years at JCB in various Sales & Marketing positions in the UK and abroad, including heading up the Waste, Recycling and Demolition division and was responsible for the development and introduction of the JCB Wastemaster range of products.

    Latterly Rik assumed responsibility for the JCB Industrial business promoting the unique JCB Teletruk Industrial Forklift to many applications and industries around the world.

    Rik has hit the ground running at Finlay and is actively using his strategic business skills to develop growth plans for all the brands in the group.

    New member of parts team

    Jack Terry joined us here at head office as Parts Coordinator in May 2016. Previously in the management team at Lidl, Jack is enjoying his new role liaising with customers to ensure they get the right parts at the right time. He’s looking forward to a long career at Finlay Group.

    Farewell to Heather

    After 11 years of sterling service Heather Wright has left Finlay Group for pastures new. In fact a complete change of career beckons for Heather, who has joined a local school as a Teaching Assistant. The new role gives Heather the perfect opportunity to work with children and more specifically to indulge her enthusiasm for supporting children with learning difficulties. In her spare time Heather puts her athletics coaching qualifications to the test at the local athletics club here in Stafford. The whole company wishes Heather all the best for the future.

    We have been strengthening the team over the last few months with some key appointments. This reflects not only our success, but also our desire to expand and grow in the future. We look forward to sharing more new appointments with you in the coming months.

    I am particularly pleased that Terex Finlay launched the new 674 screener at the Hillhead Show. This is the smallest 4 way split crusher on the market and offers huge potential thanks to its extra arm which makes it possible to screen 4 products rather than 3. Its size and mobility should make it a universal choice for any of the mining, quarrying, construction, demolition and waste industries. You can read more on this exciting new product on page 7.

    If you are a customer and would like to feature in this magazine, please don’t hesitate to send information and photos to [email protected]

    FLIP-FLOW SCREENING Flip Flow screens are designed to effectively screen difficult e.g. sticky or wet material to an infinite variety of sizes and are highly effective for the processing of skip waste fines, trommel fines, compost, aggregate or waste wood processing.

    Built to a high standard, the Proflow flip-flow screen offers an essential pre-treatment to material before being offered to the density separator Independent drive allows maximum agitation of material and prevents blockage. Proflow screens are made up of two separate decks in one unit that are independently driven as opposed to the traditional method of having the lower deck suspended on rubber mounts. This method ensures maximum agitation of material and prevents the bottom deck being weighed down, thus preventing blockages and keeping production to a maximum.

    AIR/DENSITY SEPARATION EPS Ltd utilise a variety of well established and innovative methods to separate mixed waste materials into light and heavy fractions. Depending on the relative densities and sizing of the material either air density separation, suction or a combination of both is used to ensure a consistent and high production separation is achieved.

  • PRODUCTION LEVELS SOAR AFTER DELIVERY OF TEREX FINLAY J-1170AS

    SPARES

    “The new plant has completely proved itself and production levels have been excellent. It starts automatically at the press of a button and is incredibly simple to use. It takes up very little room on site and, thanks to the remote control, we can easily move it about - something we’ve never been able to do with a crusher before. Importantly all parts are easily accessible for ease of maintenance and servicing. Our dealer is great to work with. They instinctively know what we need and when they’re on site they complete everything they need to.”

    The unit features a robust variable speed VGF and integrated pre-screen offering best-in-class production levels not just in recycling, but also mining, quarrying and demolition.

    12 13

    Sunderland-based Grab and Deliver recently purchased a Terex Finlay J-1170AS with a view to increasing efficiency and productivity in their busy aggregates business. The innovative company, which also provides waste material collection and haulage vehicle maintenance, took delivery of the compact and aggressive tracked primary jaw crusher this summer and so far it has been worth its weight in gold. Powering its way through an impressive 5000 tonnes of aggregate in a week the crusher is working alongside a Terex Finlay 883 screener. Material is brought to the site and fed into the screener to produce top soil and an oversize aggregate which is fed in to the J-1170AS. With its powerful, hydrostatically driven jaw chamber the unit produces 700 tonnes of 45mm down aggregate per day for use in roads and footpaths.

    Both units were supplied by Finlay Plant Northern who has now been working with the customer for over eight years. Peter Barrass is one of the founders of Grab and Deliver and is really impressed by the benefits of the machine.

    WHEN YOU NEED THEM. WHERE YOU NEED THEM

  • Paul Waite, Area Sales Manager at GBM UK, was very impressed with the plant during the trial and decided to go ahead and buy the machine;

    “Soil production accounts for 75 per cent of saleable products from our Doncaster site, but we’ve previously been forced to stop production between November and February because our machines kept clogging up with wet material. The Terex Finlay 883+ Spaleck copes well with the soil, even in wet weather, and that means we’ll be able to screen constantly throughout the year with increased throughput as well. This is the first machine we’ve had from Finlay Plant Northern and we’re really impressed with the product and the service.”

    New customer GBM UK has purchased a shiny new 883+ Spaleck following a trial last year and just so happened to take delivery of the 125th machine ever produced. The Lincoln-based firm purchased the unit from Finlay Plant Northern who worked with the company to provide a solution that would enable all year round production of soil and other materials.

    RB HAIGH STRENGTHENS RECYCLING EQUIPMENT LINE-UP WITH NEW J-960 JAW CRUSHERDUNMOW-based RB Haigh has added a Terex Finlay J-960 jaw crusher to its portfolio of mobile recycling plant which already features two Terex Finlay screeners; the 888 and 863.

    Featuring the proven Terex direct drive single-toggle jaw crusher, the J-960 is crushing concrete and helping to process waste material down to 50mm and below, with the end product being used on construction projects in Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

    The unit features a heavy-duty hopper with integrated vibrating grizzly and pan feeder as standard, and its compact size, superior mobility and high crushing capacity - even at tight settings in recycling and hard rock operations - means the J-960 is well suited to the needs of small- to medium-sized operators.

    Russell Haigh, is co-owner of RB Haigh. He’s very pleased with the latest addition to the fleet;

    “Our latest investment highlights our commitment to running a well-equipped recycling facility with modern plant; ensuring that we always meet high environmental standards. The Terex Finlay machines are well-built and engineered and highly productive. We get excellent service and technical support from Finlay Plant South East, which we value highly.”

    HENSHAWS OF CHESHIRE ALSO OPTS FOR THE J-960Another J-960 has been delivered to a waste transfer station in Macclesfield thanks to its quick set-up and ease of mobility. The unit was supplied by Finlay Central and joins an extensive hire fleet of Terex Finlay units already used at the site.

    The J-960 was specified by Henshaws predominantly because of its compact size and remote control capability. It is working hand in hand with an 883+ screener which pulls weight out of general waste brought to the site to reduce landfill costs. It screens the hardcore prior to crushing and the

    oversize is fed to the J-960 - which is currently powering its way through 1,000 tonnes of recycled aggregate a day. This process produces 10mm, 20mm and 40mm clean aggregates as well as recycled MOT and 6F2 used in general building projects.

    The Terex Finlay J-960 unit weighs less than 30 tonnes which means that operators can move it around on site without needing a movement order. It can also be easily folded up and transported on a low-loader with no compromise to its production capacity.

    MD RECYCLING UPGRADES TO 883+Finlay Plant SW customer, MD Recycling, visited the Hillhead Show to see the new 883+ in action and promptly placed an order to replace its existing 883 screener. Since its delivery the quality and speed of recycled products has improved greatly and Director of MD Recycling, Marc Davies, is very happy with the improvement in productivity;

    “The hourly production rate of the machine is considerably better and its ability to cope with wet conditions is amazing. It processes green, mixed inert and builders’ waste as well as construction and demolition material brought to site by local authorities and building companies from across Wales. When not in use we hire the unit out and our clients have also really noticed the difference.”

    DUAL FUEL CONVERSION SUITS SITE’S STATIC PLANTEngineers from Finlay Central have converted a Terex Finlay 595 to dual power to support high performance operations and sustainability at Cemex East Leake Quarry. The 595 mobile scalping unit was adapted to run off electric power under a conversion process carried out at the quarry site and now runs off both electricity and diesel to work in harmony with the site’s static plant.

    The machine was originally taken out on hire, but has now been purchased to replace a static conveyor and grid with hopper.

    William Newton, assistant quarry manager at East Leake is pleased with the conversion;

    “We had the 595 on a three month trial and it was a big success for us. It improved processing rates and avoided the spillages and blockages we’d encountered in the past. Throughput has increased dramatically and we now see, depending on the material, volumes of between 130 and 170 tonnes an hour being processed.

    Material from the 595 goes through to a static wash plant and is washed, screened and crushed to produce two sands and single size aggregates. Having the machine operating electrically means that it joins up with the rest of the plant and this helps the site run smoothly and highly effectively.”

    The tracked 595 can be disconnected from the electric power and switched to diesel when it needs to be moved elsewhere on site. A very flexible solution for the customer.

    HILLHEAD SUCCESS 28-30 JUNE 2016

    HEALTH AND SAFETY EVENT DRAWS CROWDS

    The world’s biggest working quarry exhibition paid host to the best ever presence from Terex Finlay and the Finlay Group in early summer. The Hillhead Show, located on the site of a former working quarry in Buxton, combines static machinery displays with huge demonstration areas, enabling manufacturers to showcase their wares in front of the thousands of visitors that pass through the 3-day event.

    This year there were 14 Terex Finlay machines on display across the site; eight of these were static and six machines were working in the allocated working demonstration arenas. Of the 14, five were brand new models introduced this year including the C-1540 direct drive cone crusher, the 674 inclined screen, the 873 heavy duty screen, the 883 + and the yet-to-be-released l-140RS impact crusher.

    As part of a nationwide series of Health & Safety events organised by the Mineral Products Association, the Finlay Group was pleased to supply a 694+ Supertrak demonstration screener to the Midlands event hosted by JCB at their quarry in Wardlow, Staffordshire which is jointly owned with Tarmac.

    The event, held in September, attracted 110 delegates from 18 companies across the Midlands and brought together operators, health and safety experts and machinery manufacturers to share best practice and highlight on-site safety with quarry workers.

    Wet weather didn’t stop the crowds at the main working area where a J-1480 jaw crusher and the C-1554 cone crusher were put through their paces, demonstrating their consistent output of up to 800tph, whilst the new l-140RS impact crusher gave visitors a preview into its ability to produce three products from one platform.

    In the recycling areas a J-1170AS jaw crusher showcased its versatility as a crushing and screening plant on one platform and an 873 Spaleck recycling screen highlighted its impressive material processing capabilities from a unit with compact transport dimensions.

    Notable sales successes resulting from the show included a J-960 jaw crusher to OCL Regeneration, an 883+ to the KKB Group, plus a further 883+ to MD Recycling and an 873 to Peter Bennie; a leading producer of natural stone. We look forward to reporting further deals in future editions.

    23

    Graham Dunwell from Hanson led a section at the event on general machine safety and gave the delegates a walkround of the 694+ Supertrak pointing out all the relevant safety features. To test the delegates’ safety knowledge he had previously removed certain guarding and undone a few bolts; hoping his deliberate errors were spotted by some eagle-eyed operators. Happily, the group was quick to spot the faults that would need rectification prior to use in a live situation.

    The day itself was a huge success and the Finlay Group was delighted to be a part of it.
