You might be one of those that have been cutting out sugar for health

reasons. But there are days when you think, see, or bump on sweets like ice cream… cakes… doughnuts… oh, so tempting! How can life be sweeter but healthier? Krispy Kreme has an answer.

Less sweet donuts can now be enjoyed at Krispy Kreme. They’re available in two flavors, classic cinnamon and snickers doodle.

Classic cinnamon is a ring doughnut coated with

cinnamon powder, all purpose flour, and cornstarch. On the other hand, snickers doodle is topped with sugar cookies and made of all spice powder, ginger powder, all purpose flour, and dipped into white chocolate and salted butter. So, unlike other Krispy Kreme doughnuts glazed with sugar with

cream filling, these two are less sinful. I just had them at Krispy Kreme Limketkai and between these two, I find classic cinnamon tastier.

Spend your rainy days with a hot coffee paired with these less sweet doughnuts. They’re available at all Krispy Kreme

stores nationwide.

A TABLE FOR NINE

ZOLA GONZALEZ-MACARAMBON

FIREBRANDS AND POETS

Always a high moment in a literature teacher’s day are “shining eyes” – a term I recently

learned at a faculty seminar but has been on the lookout for, for a decade.

Huge orbs of bright lights coming from a place of passion, interest, gusto in students whom, since the seminar, I have started thinking of as aliens I try to get through to in the language of poetry. (“ET poem home.”)This fire, this particular burn is that essential something I know many in the academe perform the literary and analytical acrobatics, sometimes even the carnivalesque for on a daily basis.

Mind you, this “fire” is not elusive as I may have, at this point, expanded it to the level of myth.

After years, stoking it becomes easy but keeping it hot, bright, and heavy outside the classroom is an achievement.

It was a Saturday; it was pouring rain and not a lot held promise but a steaming bowl of soup on the table.

Laundry, mostly clean but not nearly dry enough, has been threatening to mottle

in places for days. What could have very well ended in bloating and funky smelling uniforms on a line surprisingly delivered, well, “shining eyes”. And not in the classroom, not in the cafeteria at lunchtime but on a moist, gray weekend on two tables pushed together at a food chain.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting the students, the conflagration started by fellow writer, friend, and firebrand teacher Roger Garcia.

These youngsters, poets Roselyn Geonzon, Claudine Taray, Mai Santillan, Loraine Jo, Summer Daffodil Paguia, Mathan Luceno were joined by the older, stronger forces of Raul Moldez, Diandra Macarambon, and Anthony Daposala.

In the instant workshop that followed, we had a lot to say - I know I did – and not all rolled out like sweets from a vending machine.

But it was immediately clear that we were in the presence of talent, and I dare say, the future of the region’s, the country’s poetry.

This one, by Summer Daffodil Paguia is darkly quiet, soft, and aggressive, like a Dickinson.

akong tiil, paa, liog,tibuok lawas.

pagtidlom.

Following the success of its first dance tilt, Smart Prepaid has launched a much bigger Smart

Jump In Dance-Off competition this year, offering the best school dance crews over P4 million worth of prizes and a chance to become its brand ambassadors.

Touted as the largest interschool street dance competition in the country, Smart Jump In Dance-Off aims to give students a bigger stage to show their dancing chops to the world. This year, Smart Jump In casts a wider net for the country’s talented movers as it opens the competition to the elementary level, in addition to high school and college categories.

The initial phase of the competition will be done through online auditions that will run until August 12, 2014.

HOTBED OF TALENTS

“After the overwhelming response we got last year, we have leveled up this year’s Jump In Dance-Off competition – with bigger prizes and a new elementary category – to encourage talented dancers to give a shot at their dream even at a very young age,” said Joel Lumanlan, Smart Prepaid head.

“We see the Smart Jump In Dance-Off as a hotbed of high-caliber talents who may follow the footsteps of the country’s world-renowned street dance crews like the UP Street Dance,

Philippine AllStars, and the La Salle Dance Company, among many others,” Lumanlan added.

SPRINGBOARD TO THE WORLD STAGE

In September last year, the all-girl Sayawatha Dance Troupe of Miriam College bagged the championship of the Smart Jump In Dance-Off high school category, while the FMD Extreme of St. John Bosco Institute of Arts and Science in San Mateo, Rizal bagged the top plum in the college category.

FMD Extreme’s victory served as the team’s springboard to the world stage three months later, when they emerged as the winner of the Open Division of the World Supremacy Battlegrounds, an international hip-hop dance competition in Australia.

TWO-MINUTE VIDEO AUDITIONS

To join the online auditions, each dance group must have 12 to 16 members from the same elementary, high school or college – all subscribers of Smart Jump In SIM or regular Smart Prepaid. The members of the group may be all males, all females or a mix of males and females, 10 to 24 years old.

Interested groups must make a two-

minute video with all the members showing their best moves to their choice of music. Video must be in mp4, .mov, .flv, .mpeg, .wmv, or .avi format to be submitted online via the official contest site www.smartjumpin.com/danceoff2.

Dance groups will be judged based on their visual and artistic expression; technical execution; and musicality.

WORKSHOPS UNDER TOP DANCE COACHES

Those who will pass the online auditions will be invited to the live regional screenings in the different spots of the country in August and September. The top teams will battle it out in the grand finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on October 5.

“Aside from the chance to win cash prizes, the final teams will also have the chance to attend a much-coveted workshop under the country’s top dance coaches and even perform alongside their favorite artists. So we are calling all qualified dance groups to make that first step to realizing their goals,” Lumanlan added.

To read the complete mechanics, visit www.smartjumpin.com/danceoff2. For more updates, also follow the official Smart Jump In account on Facebook (www.facebook.com/SmartJumpIn) and official Smart Twitter account (@SMARTCares).

TRY… PLAY… STAY…! The Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club (CDORFC,) visited the Liceo de Cagayan elementary and high school as they conducted their “Get Into Rugby” (GIR) Program; A 3-day series of free-training for school-kids, June 28 to July 2.

Rugby is a football type of sport which has a deflated shape of ball to be play with; it originated from the United Kingdom.

Noel Villa, a Filipino who migrated to UK since he was eight; where he first played rugby and loved it since 2011, he came back to the Philippines and he was the first one to introduce it and able to have a rugby team in our locality, the Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club (CDORFC).

In making the team, Villa first started with nothing and only a few know about the rugby sport; but in his journey, CDORFC was able to compete, with those in-experienced rugby players in Region X and bagged the championship in the

recent POC & PNG sports cup.As the Philippine Rugby Football

Union (PRFU) administrates the School GIR program in all over the Philippines, Villa’s love and passion for the rugby and as the coach of CDORFC doesn’t think twice and extends his generous arms in sharing his knowledge to the young generation in our city as to their participation.

“It’s a sport I’ve always been playing as a kid, and as I moved in here, I wanted to share and I wanted the kids to learn about the sport, and it’s an opportunity as well to teach them for free.” said Coach Villa.

The Get into Rugby program aims to introduce the sport to the students from grade school to high school and to find some talents along the way who can represent in the next Philippine Youth Game – Batang Pinoy, the national sports competition program for children.

Girlie G. Acero, MAPEH and TLE chairperson, Liceo High School, sees it as

a very good clinic and it’s an opportunity for the students to discover new things. According to her, it will help them in their physical aspect, their confidence will be boost and if ever they will be tapped, that would be a great honor to the school.

“It’s a good sport and a good exercise for us teenagers. We really had fun!” said Carlyn Maraga, a grade nine student of Liceo de Cagayan who participated in the rugby training.

Normally, they have their trainings with only few participants and this is the first time having an exclusive session at school to receive a full GIR clinic for free. From few participants, they have now more than a thousand kids have tried, played and hopefully to stay in rugby sport all throughout the country.

They will soon to visit more schools in CdeO like Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCSH), Xavier University and Balulang High School.

“It's the Circle of Life. And it moves us all.” ~ Elton John

As it aims to re-focus the importance of agriculture to everything, Xavier University’s College of Agriculture presents this year’s theme for the coming Manresa Days Celebration, “Agriculture at the Center”.

Represented by colorful rings depicting the circle of life, the logo for this year's celebration also speaks of the college's battlecry to mainstream agriculture to various sectors, including the youth. The leaf at the heart of the logo depicts of a labyrinth - with confusing paths yet always meets at the center.

Manresa Days is an annual celebration of the

college; a tradition opening Manresa to the public to showcase its products, services, programs, and everything about the college.

This year, it will be held on August 20-24.

Cagayan de Oro City - As part of its continuing mission to provide its members with

activities and opportunities that benefit the community, Capitol University Alumni Association (CUAA) recently conducted a career orientation seminar on real estate at its Audio Visual Room. Organized in partnership with Italpinas Euroasian Design and Eco-Development Corp. (ITPI) - a Cagayan de Oro property developer specializing in sustainable development and design, the seminar sought to provide guidance to Capitol University students seeking career development in real estate.

About 180 students from Capitol University and guests from other schools attended the seminar. Career opportunities in real estate in the country and abroad were presented to the students during the seminar.

Participants also learned about the techniques on how to respond to an increasingly global market of Philippine buyers and sellers.

National Real Estate Association (NREA) chairman Alejandro Mañalac, who was one of the guest speakers at the event, lauded CUAA for organizing the seminar.

“It was a very good initiative done by the university to open the eyes of the students and have a different perception of real estate, exposing them to different aspects of the industry,” he said.

CUAA Board Member and Coordinator Mark Doblas also shared: “It has been a delight to serve our general membership yet the opportunity to extend these services to the students and to the community as a whole is even more delightful and fulfilling.”

Also invited to speak at the seminar

were Cheryll Barriga, general manager of Primavera Residences – an initial project of ITPI – and Lorens Ziller, chairman of Multiplata Investment Group. Barriga presented Primavera Residences as a case study on sustainable development.

Recognizing the increasing number of real estate developments in Cagayan de Oro and their significant contributions to the city’s economy, the association believed that students should start exploring the industry as a career potential.

“Real estate is not just for salesmen or brokers. For students, it doesn’t mean that their future is dependent on the course they're taking. The most important thing is for people now to consider real estate as a true profession – as a true career not just a sideline, but a real full time profession,” shared Mañalac.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -The highest ranked executive of Mindanao’s biggest power plant has urged ASEAN companies to build up their resiliency to cope with natural and man-made disasters to assure the continuity and sustainability of their respective enterprises.

“Business Continuity is more than just about recovering business functions from a disaster. It is ensuring that critical business functions continue promptly in the event of a disruption or disaster,” stressed Carsten Evers, power plant manager of STEAG State Power Inc. during the Personnel Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) 16th Mindanao Summit recently hosted

by Cagayan de Oro City. STEAG owns and operates Mindanao’s largest and most modern plant.

In his talk, “Business Continuity Management: Leadership in Crisis and Disaster Preparedness Response”, Dr. Evers shared his company’s recent crisis experience when the power plants two turbines were damaged in an industrial accident.

“As a leader, you must have a vision for crisis resolution. Without a clear and compelling vision for response and recovery, you will not be able to adequately lead your people during times of crises.”

“Your people will be stressed out and deadlines time-compressed.

Information will be inadequate and the high consequences of your responses could determine if people will be harmed, careers ruined and your company seriously damaged,” he added.

The BCM Institute defines BCM as “an organization-wide discipline and a complete set of processes that identifies potential impacts which threaten an organization. It provides a capability for an effective response that safeguards the interests of its major stakeholders and reputation.”

Dr. Evers cited the five guiding principles for managing a crisis and how STEAG closely observed them in dealing with its disaster: (1) Well-being of people

The BCM Program of SPI has been adopted to protect the business operation of the plant as well as its most valuable assets - its employees.

first, with caring and compassion; (2) Assume appropriate responsibility; (3) Address needs of all stakeholders in a timely manner; (4) All decisions and actions based on honesty and ethical guidelines; and, (5) Available, visible and open communication with all impacted parties.

According to research conducted by the Center for Risk Communications, demonstration of caring is more important than all other leadership traits combined.

“If you come across as uncaring, people will become outraged,” Dr. Evers said. “Caring during crisis response is not a feeling. Caring is a set of corporate and personal behaviour that elicit the perception in impacted stakeholders that you and your company truly care.”

The executive singled out the importance of two-way communication in clearly coming across with caring.

“Simply put, you will never be any better at responding to crisis than your communication. That involves how well you listen to obtain facts, and how well you speak openly to impacted stakeholders.”

He cited how all too often human

communications fail during a crisis.“Unclear goals, misunderstood

instructions, poor delegation, incomplete feedback systems - lack of decision-making - these are the core communication failures within most crisis situations.” Dr. Evers stressed. “Leaders must therefore continually focus on crafting and sending clear, unambiguous communications with little or no error of misinterpretation by their supervisors, peers, subordinates, customers, community, or the media.”

He urged crisis managers to adopt specific, concise, and action-focused language to effectively connect with everyone impacted by the crisis.

“Experience and empirical research all seems to agree. It is best to prepare. Crisis leadership planning, training, table top exercise and simulations, they all play an important part in helping you become a crisis leader,” he concluded.

The summit was focused on the theme “Gearing Up for ASEAN Integration” which is scheduled to be implemented next year with the planned creation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

The AEC envisages the creation of

a single market and production base, a highly competitive economic region, equitable economic development, and a region fully integrated into the global economy.

Human Resources Development and Capacity Building ranks high among the AEC areas of cooperation along with recognition of professional qualifications; closer coordination on macroeconomic and financial policies; trade financing; enhanced infrastructure and communications connectivity; development of electronic transactions through e-ASEAN; integrating industries across the region to promote regional sourcing; and enhancing private sector involvement for the building of the AEC.

The AEC aims to transform ASEAN into a region with free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labor, and freer flow of capital. ASEAN Leaders adopted the ASEAN Economic Blueprint during the 13th ASEAN Summit held 20 November 2007 in Singapore to serve as a master plan for the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community 2015.

Startups are basically companies that are still in their infancy. They come up with an idea or a “solution” to common everyday problems and work around that idea to turn it into a business. They’re often supported by entrepreneurial founders during their early stages until their product kicks off and they can continue their business independently.

Some examples of the most successful Startups of all time are Facebook, Amazon, eBay, Apple and Google.

Compared to opening a bakery, building a tech startup has a "low entry barrier ". There’s no need to rent space, hire a lot of people or buy expensive equipment. You can start by simply building it on your laptop, then place it in the app store (like what developers of Flappy Bird did), and later make a proposal to interested companies/entrepreneurs for additional support.

Startup Weekend involves “walking the participants” through different stages of the business cycle including idea creation, business pitching,

prototype development, mentorship and networking sessions until product or business presentations are proposed to possible investors and funders.

“Startup Weekend is also an opportunity for Kagay-anons to showcase their startup ideas and talents, so younger generations of professionals will be encouraged to start their own business,” said Stephanie Rosalind P. Caragos, president of the CDO ICT Business Council, and president & CEO of Syntactics, Inc., a startup IT Company that’s already existed for 14 years.

“During Startup Weekend, these young professionals will learn and experience how to pitch ideas in front of investors,” Caragos said,

“The event is open to anyone with a passion to learn and to share what they know. Participants may register as "Technical - Software Developer", "Designer" or "Non-technical", said Jonathan Adolfo, executive director, CDO ICT Business Council and Business Development Officer of Syntactics, Inc. “With the help of Startup Weekend, Cagayan de Oro can show investors that it’s ready to be their next business investment!”

This weekend workshop teaches people how to start their own businesses,” said Chris Ian Fiel a Director of the CDO ICT Business Council, owner and manager Netogo, one of the longest running chain of internet cafés in Mindanao and Visayas and co-founder of Barato Online and Sureblooded.

“It also gives them the experience of how to start a business by themselves,” he added. “ This volunteer-organized workshop unites the local tech and business communities to come together and teach/show people how to build their own tech-based business/startups.”

Following the success of the first Startup Weekend Cebu in May 2012, organizers have staged several other Startup Weekend events in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Bohol hosted its first Startup Weekend last May 23 to 25 at the University of Bohol in Tagbilaran City. It was topped by the Flipnotes app which allows users to create notes that have pictures in front with the text behind it and which can be flipped using a flip function.

The Flipnotes team was awarded a three-month virtual incubation by CebuinIT, Geeks on a Beach ticket from TechTalks.ph, Freelancer membership, access to Auza.net OSX development facilities, an iPod from Airbnb, free massage, and Ideaspace mugs and shirts.

Second place went to RentMINE, an app that provides a venue for users who want to rent out their personal items for extra cash. RED App or the Ready for Emergency and Disaster mobile application won third place.

Meantime, the fourth Startup Weekend Cebu (SWCEBU4) was held last June 6 to 8 at the University of Cebu(UC)-Banilad Campus, as one of the highlights of Cebu Business Month.

GigBox, an online scheduling system for band events and venues in Cebu, topped the lineup of 17 participating teams, followed by Likha, a web-based shirt printing platform and JustBecause, an event listing website that sends SMS notifications of upcoming events to subscribers even when they are offline.

The winning team’s package of prized included enrolment in the CebuinIT or Cebu Business Incubator for IT, a DOST-UP Cebu TBI Project, Arcanys mentorship program, and serviced conference room usage by Global Hub Serviced Offices, in order to cultivate GigBox into a business.
