A significant factor that defines the future of your business is you. As the business owner your personality plays a big part in determining success and if you don’t hone your people skills, you may not maximise your businesses potential. That great product and great service you provide needs a great you to present it!

Meeting people and winning new business from a recommendation is like winning a prize and there is much pride and satisfaction in the success that it brings. However, without access to a reliable medium, meeting the right people can be hit and miss. At a dedicated networking event this is made simple as everyone in attendance will be like-minded and have the same objective as you - making new contacts that will eventually grow their business.

Whilst for some the concept of walking into a room full of strangers can be daunting, with practice it becomes easier and rest assured you will soon find yourself engrossed in conversation and swapping ideas with people you have never met - your circle of contacts will grow and so will your customer base.

Not everyone you speak to at a networking event will have a common business thread, but it is important to remember that the effects of networking continue long after the event has ended. How many times has someone told you they need a particular service or product, and you have said “I heard so and so is good, I met them last week”? I’m sure that type of conversation is familiar to us all in our small community and underscores the importance and effectiveness of networking with everyone.

Join the ConversationNetworking has been made so much easier with the rapid rise of social media. It is now very simple to continue networking back at the office by connecting, following or ‘friending’ your new contacts online and in many cases this will help develop and nurture the relationship. Love it or hate it, online networking provides unmatched and invaluable opportunities to easily reach and interact with a massive audience and if you’re not a part of it as a business, you really are missing out

Join the PartySo before you delete or simply ignore the next networking invitation – think again, you could be throwing away the best opportunity in years.

Start with a handshake and grow your network!

Working Well...Healing Hands - Equilibrium Massage TherapyTurning his dreams into reality has taken one massage therapist from London’s trading pits to the Guernsey FC dugout.

Paul Gosling took the plunge and swapped his career in finance to set up Equilibrium Massage Therapy over three years ago - and his business is going from strength to strength.

The 39-year-old, who hails from South London, left school at 16 and was thrown straight into the lion’s den as a trader on the London International Financial Future’s Exchange (LIFFE). Paul has always had an interest in massage therapy and trained as a reiki master 15 years ago.

“My family has always been spiritual and it fascinated me growing up. My aunt founded a massage business back in the 1980s and was a real inspiration,” said Paul.

When he moved to Guernsey in 1999 Paul continued to work in the finance industry andwhilst establishing Equilibrium, Paul worked full time in finance and practiced massagetherapy in the evenings and weekends.

“I was very lucky that, at the time, I had a very supportive employer. On 1 October 2011 I took the plunge into working as a full time remedial massage therapist and I’ve never looked back.”

Qualified in remedial massage, Paul is currently working towards gaining his Certificate in Advanced Clinical Massage later this year.

For the past two years, Paul has also worked as part of the support team for the winning Guernsey Muratti squad and as part of the medical team for Guernsey FC.

“I’m extremely proud of working with the team. The pride, ambition and dedication they have shown, even when they’ve been right up against it, has been amazing.”

Star striker, Ross Allen, said Paul was a valued member of the GFC backroom staff.

“His pre/post game massages help us get ready for the strains of competition, especially as we near the end of a long and hard fought campaign.”

Ross said he now appreciates the importance, as a sportsman, to get regular massage therapy to help prepare, relax and recover the muscles.

Paul is a loyal business member of thebestof Guernsey and Equilibrium was recognised as one of the best businesses in Guernsey and placed in the top five most loved businesses in the British Isles in the category of massage therapy during thebestof’s ‘14 Days of Love’ campaign.

“I would encourage any business to join thebestof Guernsey as it is a great way of meeting like-minded people and the team are very proactive at finding solutions to help raise the profile of your business. It also acts as a fantastic support network,” said Paul.

If you would like to enjoy the benefits of therapeutic massage and bring balance back into your life, read Equilibrium’s reviews on thebestof Guernsey to find out just how good Paul is and contact him today!

“If you want the ultimate luxury both in respect of treatments available and the gorgeous surroundings, you have to try Bella Spa. It has the feel of a top luxury city spa anywhere in the world. I had two amazing treatments, a facial and a back treatment and both were fantastic. The little extra touches reallymade the experience special.”

“I want to thank The Learning Company for such a useful evening last night. It was great to have some time away from the office to have a discussion about where we are and where we should be going as a firm and having you facilitate this was invaluable (and also good fun….!). Now we have the vision we can start getting on with the job in hand, so hopefully‘watch this space’.”

“Travel Counsellors’ experience and expertise is second to none. They are both so well travelled and can provide personal recommendations from their own experiences. They have truly earned our trust. You would expect to pay a high premium for this service; however, Chris and Debbie always remain very competitive. You will not getthis servicefrom anyother agent.”

“I can’t recommend Martin highly enough. He’s got stacks of knowledge, is a great motivator, and obviously cares about getting the best results for each person. If you want general fitness, he can guide you and you’ll quickly see the results and benefits. If you want sports-specific coaching, he’ll build a uniquefitness programme that willproduce far betterperformances thanyou’d imagined.”

“I would recommend Karen and her team. My daughter has been at her dance school for nine years and has made great friendships. It has developed her confidence and given her a little independence. Keep up the great work Karen.”
