Digital Tools in the 21st Century Classroom

Technology is a key component of the 21st century classroom. The ideal classroom is equipped with the following digital tools:

● smart board● class set of IPads● class set of Macbooks● social networking tools● document camera● web camera● video conferencing systems● e-readers● mobile devices● web 2.0 tools

Why technology is an essential part of the 21st Century Classroom?

The 21st Century student is a global learner. Technology allows students to interact with other learners around the globe through social networks and web cameras and video conferencing systems. Students can share work through network systems and view other students work from around the world. Instead of learning from textbooks, students can talk to real exports by web cam or watch streamlined news events as they are happening. Technology also allows students to pursue their own inquiry based projects and be accountable for their own learning. According to the Oracle Education Foundation- The Seven C’s of 21st Century Learning are; Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Cross-Cultural Understanding, Computing & ICT Literacy, and Career & Lifelong Learning. Technology plays an important role as a means to gain these Lifelong Skills.

Ways that Ipads support learning in the 21st Century Classroom

A student in the 21st Century Classroom would use a variety of apps on a daily basis on their Ipad to explore, generate, collaborate and share their learning. Apps such as Skype allow students to connect globally with exports in fields such as authors of novels. Students can show their learning creatively using apps such as Comic Life, Show Me, and iMovie. Subsequently, students can then use Dropbox to save their projects in an icloud for others to view.

The Physical Layout of the 21st Century Classroom

In order to facilitate collaboration and communication, the 21st Century classroom has a classroom layout that is student centered as opposed to the 20th century model which was teacher centered. Furniture is arranged in small groupings that allow for easy discussion and collaboration. Instead of the teacher being the center of attention at the front of the room the teacher facilitates learning throughout the room.

Furniture in the 21st Century Classroom

Learning in the 21st Century Classroom is “in the moment”. To facilitate a learning space that accommodates for instant collaboration, communication, reflection, and creativity, the learning space must be able to change and adapt easily and quickly. Therefore, the furniture in the 21st century classroom must be flexible and easy to maneuver. The chairs should be on wheels and easy to move to allow for small group discussions or large group meetings and reporting. There will modular table that are easy to push together quickly for larger group collaborations or separate for individual reflection.

Environmental Sustainability in the Design of the 21st Century Classroom

The 21st Century Classroom should be build according to environmental design principles. Environmental educator David Orr lists the following principles of a “green classroom”● sensors that open and close the

windows based on external temperatures and weather conditions.

● rooftop design that collects rainwater that is recycled throughout the building

● solar panels to generate some of the energy required

● carpet tiles made from recycled materials

The role of the teacher in the 21st Century Classroom?The 21st Century Classroom teacher is a “facilitator” of learning rather than a deliverer of knowledge. In 20th century classrooms, teachers used mainly a “stand and deliver” direct method of instruction where students were passive listeners and the learning focus was the content of the information. In the 21st century, teachers have moved away from teacher-centered learning toward student-centered learning in a more of a “guides on the side” role facilitating project based learning of students. The learning focus the the 21st century classroom is more on the process rather than content. Teachers help engage, discuss, inquire, and question students on their learning.

Using the “Flipped Classroom” model of teaching in the 21st Century Classroom

The 21st Century Classroom will use the “flipped classroom” model to teach some subjects. Subjects such as Math & Science work well with this model of teaching. The teacher makes a video of the lesson he/she would normally teach during class time and uploads the video to a class website. Here the students will watch the lesson prior to class and then classtime is used for applying the knowledge. The teacher is free to work one on one with students or small groups and students have more opportunity to ask the teacher questions. This model makes learning more personal for students as students who have difficulty with the concept can review the online video for better understanding using a personal mobile device and students can go at their own speed and learn more independently. With the Flipped Classroom Model, Class Time is used for active problem solving and learning.

How student learning is demonstrated in the 21st Century Classroom

Learning in the 21st Century Classroom is demonstrated through● project-based learning● inquiry projects● genius hour

Learning is relevant and students are exploring real world issues and problems. Learning is hands-on and inquiry-based initiated with a guiding question that develops into collaborative research. Student presentations of projects are presentations of the learning not just of the finished product. Technology is an integral part of the project and guides learning through allowing students to connect with experts globally through webcams and other web 2.0 tools.

Students sharing learning through Social Media in the 21st Century Classroom

Social Networking will play an instrumental role in the 21st Century Classroom allowing students to collaborate with students online and share learning. Some of the ways students can share learning through Web 2.0 tools are:

comments on class projects● contributing to class blog● designing class website and uploading

video presentations and projects● global student social networks

How learning is assessed in the 21st Century Classroom?In the 21st century classroom, student assessment measures a student's learning and is called Assessment for Learning or formative assessment. Formative assessment focuses on providing feedback during the journey of learning and how the student can move their learning forward, rather using summative assessment of the previous century which tests isolated facts relating to curriculum standards. Assessment for Learning happens daily such as when teachers check for understanding and is ongoing by teachers, peers, and the student. The purpose of student assessment is to improve student learning by assessing what students are doing well and what they can improve on. In formative assessment, students would understand how assessment works, would be involved in creating rubrics, would learn methods to assess their peers work and give meaningful feedback. Likewise, students are able to assess their own work as well as their own learning and set goals to improve meaning and understanding for them.
