One day on the African savannah, the zebras were crossing the hot plain to get to the water hole on the other side of the river.

The only problem was crossing the river. The river was home to a large, rude crocodile who liked nothing better than a tasty zebra snack. But the zebras were willing to take that risk for the crunchy marsh grasses, sweet flowers, juicy lily pads, and cold water that was at the water hole.

On this day, the zebras approached the river without a care in their minds. It was sizzling hot, and they really wanted to get to the water hole.

While they chattered, Crocodile awoke. He was very hungry, and all he had eaten this week was a wildebeest. He crouched low in the muddy river bottom, waiting for the noisy zebras to cross so he could have something to eat. But the entire zebra band managed to jump over the river except the last, a zebra named Triky. Triky jumped, but fell in with a splash. Crocodile leaped, and soon his teeth were at poor Triky’s throat.

However, Triky was very clever and always tricky, living up to his name. He thought up a plan to get out of the river very speedily. He began to talk to Crocodile.

Please don’t eat me, kind

sir!

Not eat you?! Ha ha ha!

Surely you are joking!
