A Note from Your Chronicler

It is hard to fathom that the year is nearly gone...but it is. In our future there is Coronation, War of the Wings, Queen's Rapier and Fall Crown Tournament. Here in Bright Hills we also have an upcoming polling for our next Baron and Baroness, I would encourage you to read the upcoming Special Edition of the Yeoman with the letters of intent and contemplate who will best serve our Barony. Beyond that are many holidays to spend with friends and family between now and the end of the year. So as you plan out the rest of the year I hope you find a moment to enjoy the cooler weather, the changing colors of the leaves and the splendor of this autumn season.

Battle Of Agincourt took place in France on 25 October 1415. Was one of the major battles of the Hundred Years War, Agincourt was a decisive victory for the English, led King Henry V, over the French, commanded by Charles d'Albret, Constable of France. As French knights attack the English line, their horses become bogged down in the mud as English archers continue to pour deadly fire into their ranks. The battle was later immortalized by William Shakespeare in his play Henry V and his famous rousing speech concerning St. Crispin's day. Artist Unknown.

Happy-say-what? St. Crispins day is a traditional holiday for all shoemakers. Quite obviously sanctified by the catholic church, St. Crispin and his brother St. Crispinian were two shoemakers who preached the gospel by day and made shoes by night in Soissons, France. They were beheaded c. 286.

To the Wonderful Populace of Bright Hills, we Kollack and Rebecca Send Greetings.

As we venture into the fall months, we look back over the past month and though it did appear as if we were in the tropics, it was wonderful to share it with the fine populace of Bright Hills. We were able to taste the delicious food entries at our own Trial by Fire, where we also witness once again the glorious archers

of Bright Hills, with Master Godai and Lord Aiden keeping the now coveted Lochmere Arrow in Bright Hills’ possession. It was good to see several of you at Storvik’s and Lochmere’s joint event Battle of the Bay. Though we woke on Sunday morning to the sound of rain hitting the tent, Saturday was a lovely day and the event was once again very successful as we shared in the baronial birthday festivities of our dear cousins of Lochmere.

The month of October starts with the coronation of Their Highnesses Ragnarr Blackhammer and Lynette Semere in the Barony of Sacred Stone. That same weekend several members of the barony will be supporting the Shire of Spiaggia Levantina at the Celtic Festival. Following this-on the weekend of the 17th once again the Barony will be marching to War of the Wings to fight for the House of Lancaster (Red Roses) alongside our cousins of Lochmere and others. We hope to see many of you throughout the month, and welcome anyone that would like to retain for us for even an hour or two at the events listed above. There will be a small dayshade and day board set up alongside our cousins and friends of Lochmere at Coronation. We are hoping to have shade and respite at War of the Wings. Please come join us as our adventure continues.

Yours in Service and Friendship,Kollack and Rebecca von Zweckel Baron and Baroness of Bright Hills

Guild Reports:Armorers – No report.Bardic Circle — No report.Brewers – No reportCheese Mongers: Master Chirhart (Truman Barnes)— No report.Clothiers – No report.Cooks Guild: Baroness Wynne ferch Rhodri (Jill Peters)— The Bright Hills Cooks Guild met at the home of its Guild Mistress, Wynne, on Sunday September 23, 2018. The following was discussed…

Trial by Fire- Deirdre, Wynne and Jeanne followed up the event with brief comments. Deirdre reported that all went well. The classes held on Sunday were well attended and much appreciated. Wynne reported only one contestant dissatisfied with the judge’s comments. Jeanne suggested that we link a “How to document for Trial by Fire” sort of page with the initial Trial page. This should assist with many questions about documenting for the event.

Seventy-one dollars was turned over to the Baronial Travel fund from the Travelers Fare and breakfast.

Crown Tournament Feast- The event will be held at the Loudon County fair grounds on Saturday, 3 November, 2018. The Barony of Ponte Alto is sponsoring and the Autocrat Meisterin Adina von der Heide asked the Guild to provide the feast and of course we agreed. Brienna is the Head Cook and she presented a proposed menu to the Guild today.

Am updated menu is being sent out by Brienna so I will not repeat the list from last month. We did secure Mistress Graciella’s smoker/oven for the event as the site ovens are not reliable. We will be providing cooking and serving utensils and plates as well as personal crock pots, fast cookers and the like.

As Ponte Alto is providing servers we will also ask Adina about a Master of the Hall. A menu booklet will be provided for the tables as well as a special one for head table mentioning their extra dishes. Wynne will be writing that up.

We are serving “heirloom carrots” and it was decided to purchase 11-12 packages from Wegmans due to the good price; $1.59 for a 12 ounce package. They will be blanched and frozen until needed.

Pre-cook will be held on Sunday, 21 October at Gustav and Brienna’s home. It is also our next meeting.

Bright Hills Baronial Birthday- Raven is acting as Head Cook and has been in discussions with Jeanne. More information will be forthcoming after the November Crown Feast. Chagan, the Autocrat, has the the list of favorite recipes from previous Coronets. These will come in handy when setting the menu.

Aprons- Brienna found a site with cross-back aprons. We have decided to purchase some for those who want or need one. The cost is $25.00 and included the embroidery. Please let Brienna know if you want one. Mistress Olwen, you are already on the list!

We invite anyone who claims Bright Hills or Atlantia as their home to attend the next meeting…at the home of Gustav and Brienna on Sunday 21 October at 2:00 pm. Submitted by Baroness Wynne ferch Rhodri, Guild MistressHerb Group – Faolan Mac Raghnaill — No report.PAEG : Lady Reyne — . PAEG did not meet this month, but did participate in Trial by Fire.

Lore from the Larder

In 1415 at the Battle of Agincourt just one soldier carried in his hand a strange metal tube which at the pull of a lever, fired a small metal ball over a considerable distance. Warfare would never be the same again. In fact on exactly the same day, 25th October in 1854, the Charge of the Light Brigade took place at the Battle of

Balaclava...nothing compares. In scanning through Henry V for food references and there are several: strawberries, beef, barley broth and be-cause of the prominence Shakespeare gives Fluellen, there lots of references to leeks! At one point Pistol refers to his sword a something on which to toast cheese, just the sort of thing the soldiers were doing as the young King went on his rounds. Anyway it me think of Welsh Rarebit and leeks.

Cornish Rarebit Leek Gratin.

2 slimmish leeks (dark green parts discarded) 60g butter (1/4 cup)

175g Cornish Yarg*, de-rinded and grated1 tsp English mustard powder30g butter (2 tablespoons)45ml good beer or stout. (3 tablespoons)2 egg yolks

1. Wash and cut the leeks into rings about as think as a quarter. 2. Cook the leeks in the 60g butter until meltingly soft but not brown. Set aside.3. In the same pan, mix the mustard powder with the beer, add the 30g of butter cubed and heat gently until the

butter has melted. Tip in the cheese, reserving a tablespoonful or two for the top.4. Very gently, keeping the heat low, stir the mixture until the cheese has melted. Cool a little and taste, then

season with black pepper and a little salt. You can add Worcester Sauce - and I would if this were just going on toast.

5. Add the egg yolks and stir through, then add the leeks. Pour into individual gratin dishes, grate a little cheese on top and grill until bubbling.

6. Serve with crusty bread and a sharp salad.

*Yarg is a Cornish cheese which is wrapped in leaves and has been made since the 13th century a reasonable replacement is a creamy goats' cheese preferably Welsh or a mature cheddar with/without a pinch of thyme.http://feastsandfestivals.blogspot.com/2013/10/24-october-st-crispins-eve.html

The Saints Behind Shakespeare’s “St. Crispin’s Day” Speech Philip Kosloski

https://aleteia.org/2017/10/25/the-saints-behind-shakespeares-st-crispins-day-

Sts. Crispin and Crispinian were the first "band of brothers," who fought bravely on the battlefield of the soul.

One of the best known passages in Shakespeare’s Henry V is an epic speech of bravery, sacrifice and brotherhood. In the play King Henry rouses his soldiers’ spirits with a profound speech before the Battle of Agincourt on October 25, 1415.

The speech makes several references to “St. Crispin’s Day,” the traditional feast of Sts. Crispin and Crispinian. What’s interesting are the underlying connections between the speech and the actual saints honored on St. Crispin’s Day.

The feast day of October 25 honors the martyrdom of two men who were persecuted for the Christian faith during the reign of Roman Emperor Maximian Herculeus in 286. They were shoemakers by night and preachers of the Gospel during the day. The local governor discovered their activities and quickly ordered their execution. After trying to drown them, the governor sent both to the emperor, who had them beheaded.

Typically the Church celebrates the feast day of a martyr on the day of their death, recognizing the heroic sacrifice that won for them a victorious crown in heaven. In his speech, King Henry encourages the soldiers to associate the feast day of St. Crispin with the scars and wounds they will suffer during the ensuing battle, signs of the sacrifices they will make and the victory that will be won on the battlefield. Looking back as old men, Henry tells his soldiers, those who survive will throw a banquet for their neighbors on the eve of the feast,

And say “To-morrow is Saint Crispian.”Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,And say “These wounds I had on Crispin’s day.”

A further connection between the saints and the speech occurs later on. King Henry rallies his soldiers’ to stand together as a “band of brothers” (a phrase that inspired the popular book and mini-series of the same name).

And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,From this day to the ending of the world,

But we in it shall be rememberèd,We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me

Shall be my brother …

According to a popular tradition Sts. Crispin and Crispinian were twin brothers who were martyred together. Some scholars dispute the claim, but even if that tradition is unfounded, the two men could join in the words of King Henry and say to each other, “For he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother.”

Sts. Crispin and Crispinian were the first “band of brothers,” who fought bravely on the battlefield of the soul, conquering their inclinations and standing fast in the face of persecution. They are great models for us and hopefully someday we will be able to show them our own battle scars, representing the many sacrifices we made on earth to receive the victorious crown of eternal life.

Band of Brotherswords adapted from William Shakespeare’s Henry V, Act IV, scene iii,

by Lisa Theriot • music by Ken and Lisa Theriot https://youtu.be/1Ct5749N4RM

If we are marked this day to die We are enough to lose

But if we live, the fewer men, The greater fame accrues!

I pray you, wish not one man more Who thinks to claim a share

For we have honours fairly won And there is none to spare!

Chorus: We band of brothersFor if you shed your blood with me

You are my brotherAnd men in England now a-bed

Shall feel accursed they were not hereTo fight with us

Upon St. Crispin’s Day.

Proclaim it now throughout my host To bear no false pretense

If you’ve no stomach for this fight Depart and get you hence

The price of passage you shall have And rations generous;

We will not bear his company Who fears to die with us!

ChorusHe that shall live to see old age

And come safe home at last Shall on this vigil feast his friends

And tell of glories past He will with pride display his wounds

And scars however deep And any man who was not here Shall hold his manhood cheap!

ChorusOld men forget, and each man here

May crumble and decay But he’ll remember while he lives

What feats he did this day So shall the good man teach his son,

Until the world is new And to our memories will drink,

We few, we happy few! Chorus

Books of Knowledge Agincourt: Henry V and the Battle That Made England By Juliet Barker

Waged almost six centuries ago, the Battle of Agincourt still captivates. It is the classic underdog story, and generations have wondered how the English--outmanned by the French six to one--could have succeeded so bravely and brilliantly. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Juliet Barker paints a gripping narrative of the October 1415 clash between the outnumbered English archers and the heavily armored French knights. Populated with chivalrous heroes, dastardly spies, and a ferocious and bold king, AGINCOURT is as earthshaking as its subject--and confirms Juliet Barker's status as both a historian and a storyteller of the first rank.

A Great and Terrible King: Edward I and the Forging of Britainby Marc Morris

The first major biography of a truly formidable king, whose reign was one of the most dramatic and important of the entire Middle Ages, leading to war and conquest on an unprecedented scale.

Edward I is familiar to millions as "Longshanks," conqueror of Scotland and nemesis of Sir William Wallace (in "Braveheart"). Yet this story forms only the final chapter of the king's action-packed life. Earlier, Edward had defeated and killed the famous Simon de Montfort in battle; travelled to the Holy Land; conquered Wales, extinguishing forever its native rulers and constructing a magnificent chain of castles. He raised the greatest armies of the Middle Ages and summoned the largest parliaments; notoriously, he expelled all the Jews from his kingdom. The longest-lived of England's medieval kings, he fathered fifteen children with his first wife, Eleanor of Castile, and, after her death, he erected the Eleanor Crosses―the grandest funeral monuments ever fashioned for an English monarch.

In this book, Marc Morris examines afresh the forces that drove Edward throughout his relentless career: his character, his Christian faith, and his sense of England's destiny―a sense shaped in particular by the tales of the legendary King Arthur. He also explores the competing reasons that led Edward's opponents (including Robert Bruce) to resist him.

The result is a sweeping story, immaculately researched yet compellingly told, and a vivid picture of medieval Britain at the moment when its future was decided. 16 pages of color and B&W photographs

How to Treat the Freshmen, c. 1367

Luttrell Psalter, f. 157v

from the collections of http://askthepast.blogspot.com by Elizabeth Archibald

“We have learned from certain important and noteworthy persons... that there are some students who compel (or try to compel) the new students arriving at the university... – both by brazen and evil sei-zure of their books and other belongings, and by threats and other scams they have devised – to pay, against their will, a penalty for their freshman state (their recent and happy arrival at the aforementioned university!)... by taking them to the tavern and, as a sheep is led to the slaughter, compelling them to join in. And so the decency of conduct which should flourish in the studious, and their gravity of manners and integrity of reputation, is defiled shamefully, and carousals, ine-briations, disgusting words, promiscuities, all-nighters both in taverns and around the city at night, housebreakings, and other things we will not mention, ensue. And the reputation of the whole school and all its students is tarnished among prelates and princes and other good and honest people... Let them cease hereafter and utterly, under penalty of excommunication.”
