elcome to the 2017-2018 season of Learning & Community Engagement programming at

the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra! We are proud to be part of the Pittsburgh community and to offer opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy and engage with music. We are celebrating many milestones this year – from 80 years of Schooltime and PNC Tiny Tots concerts, to 10 years of our Orchestra Training Program for African American Musicians, and many more in between!

Join us on a journey of musical exploration – from the smallest music lovers at our PNC Tiny Tots concerts to wellness sessions for veterans at the VA. We have something for everyone that is sure to spark, inspire, and celebrate the power of music!

Join Fiddlesticks and the Pittsburgh Symphony for this season’s Fiddlesticks Family Concerts! Come to all three Saturday concerts in Heinz Hall for a morning of musical fun in a relaxed, welcoming, and interactive environment. These concerts are recommended for families with children ages three to eight. Fiddlesticks, our musical ambassador, and guest vocalist Katy Williams will guide you through these musical adventures. Fiddlesticks invites you to arrive at 10:00 a.m. to experience everything these concerts have to offer!• Learn the Fiddlesticks Theme Song, “Music Can Make Your Life

Musical MasqueradeOctober 21, 2017 11:15 a.m.Masquerade in your favorite costume, and join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Fiddlesticks for a musical Halloween adventure! Hear the magical sounds of Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Star Wars, along with the rousing In the Hall of the Mountain King. Join the Pittsburgh Symphony for a delightful Halloween celebration!

Carnival of the AnimalsFebruary 10, 2018 11:15 a.m.Fiddlesticks will introduce you to his favorite animal friends, featuring Camille Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals. Each movement in this orchestral work illustrates a different animal, from the royal lion to the graceful swan. Joining the Pittsburgh Symphony onstage will be cartoonist Joe Wos, who will be live drawing as the orchestra performs and dancers bring the animals to life through their gestures and movements. Come along on this musical journey through the animal kingdom!

Outdoor OverturesMay 12, 2018 11:15 a.m.Discover the music of the great outdoors with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra! Travel to the wild west with Copland’s Hoe Down, soar with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee, and journey to the majestic Grand Canyon with Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite. Create a live rainstorm inside Heinz Hall with your friends and family. The stars at night are big and bright in this fanciful outdoor adventure!

Sensory Friendly ConcertApril 14, 2018 at 2:30 p.m.Join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for this inclusive concert experience, open to patrons of all ages and abilities and designed especially for individuals on the autism spectrum, those with sensory sensitivities and anyone who would like to enjoy a performance in a relaxed environment. At this concert, we welcome patrons to come with family and friends and freely respond to the music in their own way.

The experience will feature a 45-minute performance with plenty of special guests and opportunities for audience participation, as well as a lineup of fun, multisensory pre-concert activities. In addition to keeping house lights partially up and providing fidgets, earplugs and a quiet room, the Pittsburgh Symphony will offer pre-visit materials to prepare patrons for the trip to Heinz Hall. ASL interpretation and open captioning will also be available throughout the performance.

The Music in George’s HeadNovember 8, 2017 at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m.Francesco Lecce-Chong, conductorJoin the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for a symphonic reading of The Music in George’s Head: George Gershwin Creates Rhapsody in Blue by Suzanne Slade with illustrations by Stacy Innerst. The orchestra will perform this well-known music portraying George Gershwin’s creative process as the book is read aloud and the illustrations are projected above the stage.

PSO Rehearsal ExperienceFor only $10 per person, you can have a rarely-seen look at what happens during an orchestra rehearsal. Attendees will arrive at Heinz Hall 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the PSO rehearsal and hear a presentation on concert etiquette before enjoying up to two and a half hours of behind-the-scenes rehearsal with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. While there is no minimum size for a group wishing to attend, the program will accept no more than 250 attendees. A complimentary ticket is available with every 25 tickets purchased. Soloists, conductors, and repertoire are subject to change. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that conductor comments will not be amplified or captioned.

Kraft Heinz Audience of the FutureWe are excited to announce a brand new Audience of the Future program – redesigned and reconceptualized for 2017 and beyond. The program invites local high school students to design and implement a multi-media arts experience. Students will curate music, imagery, and interactive elements culminating in a multi-sensory event, as well as produce, market, and build out the technical aspects of the project. By working with the PSO and innovators from other Pittsburgh cultural institutions and universities, students will be involved in every aspect of creating this vibrant experience. Ambassador ProgramThe Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Ambassador Program is available to schools throughout the region. Pittsburgh Symphony musicians visit multiple schools throughout the academic year to provide students of all ability levels with performance experiences and musical instruction. These musician ambassadors serve as an additional professional resource for music educators by addressing needs and questions in their classrooms.

EQT Orchestra Training Program for African American MusiciansThe EQT OTPAAM program is a pre-professional, two-year program designed to mentor one young African American musician in pursuit of an orchestral career. The selected musician spends two seasons immersed in the rehearsal and performance environment of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, along with studying with members of the orchestra to train and prepare for professional auditions and performance opportunities. Allegheny Valley SchoolThe Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is proud to partner with the Allegheny Valley School, which provides residential and therapeutic programs throughout Pennsylvania for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Pittsburgh Symphony performs two concerts each season for the residents at the Pittsburgh campus.

Music and WellnessThrough the Music and Wellness Program, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra works with music therapists and other healthcare professionals to bring therapeutic, live music to individuals at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System and other facilities in the Pittsburgh area and abroad. Pittsburgh Symphony musicians lead music and wellness sessions for small yet diverse groups of participants that include patients, families and healthcare staff. Lucas Richman, conductor Join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall for the world premiere of the August Wilson Symphony. Composed

by Kathryn Bostic, this work pays tribute to the iconic

playwright in an orchestral suite of five movements.

Each movement was inspired by a play that Wilson wrote

based on his life experiences growing up in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Also on the

concert will be a celebration of other talented artists and

ensembles, led by a celebrity host and narrator.
