FOREWORD History of one's country is interesting, but history of one's descen

dants and family is something to be cherished. The information collected

and given in this book took time and effort on the part of the author, Mrs.

Robert Conner, who is my sister. One of her hobbies was securing data

for our family records which gives from the years 1732 to 1959.

Each family connected is grateful for this genealogy. Because of this

book comes out from the garden of memories the history of my parents

and grandparents as well as other relatives.

PREFACE It has been, a privilege to collect data, and write a recorded family his

tory. The purpose was to preserve family records and history of our des

cendents. May we cherish the memory of those who have gone on and

what they have contributed to our heritage.

Also, may our future generations be proud of our achievements and

what we have contributed to our family history.

This could not have been accomplished without help and thanks to

all who have assisted. Especially, for using information on the Bright

Family, found in Georgië Hopkins Ford book entitled, "Kentucky Brights

and their K i n " .

A VISIT TO THE OLD HOMESTEAD

By Joseph A . Caddell

1 returned to may old home, That once I knew so well, And looked with wonder and surprise, A t the place I use to dwell.

I viewed the ground where I had played, Through all my younger days, But not the house in which I dwelt T'was gone from public gaze.

As I looked at things familiar, It semed like I was at home, But then I thought of absent friends, Like me, had left to roam.

It's only a few years since we left, But O what a noted change, Everything quite different now, it seems so very strange.

The old familiar faces Are in the distant West, That is the most of them The others gone to rest.

1 wandered to the old graveyard, Where many friends are laid, And thought how soon that death would come, No matter where we stayed.

The grass had covered O'r the graves, The bushes growing high, And briars clustered round the tombs That showed no friends were nigh.

Our old friends are missing now, Except a few, If a few short years can change so much, What can a hundred do?

MOTHER (In memory of Mrs Sarah Caddell)

By Joseph A. Caddell) Dear Mother is gone, That kind loving friend, Who loved me from infancy. We wi l l not see her again. My heart goes back To my childhood days, When Mother would guide me l n all of my ways. It would be a great joy And comfort to me, If only once more Her form I could see. It's four long years Since I saw her dear face, I ' l l always remember The time and place. She married again One bright summer day And in a short time She had moved far away. And then for four years She wrote letters to me, Saying life was as pleasant As any couid be. But then without warning, A sad letter came; Saying she was buried, It was dear Mother's name. Thinking she was well, It was sad news to me, It was hard to realize, Oh how could it be. Be kind to your mother, While here upon earth, Don't wait t i l l she is dead,

To think of her worth. If I could have been there, And took that old hand, And kissed her dear face, I'd be a happier man. If I could have given medicine Or raised up her head Or done anything for her, Before she was dead. But now she is gone, I ' l l remember her love And pray for her children To meet her above.

John Hammett was born May 28, 1875, in Lampasas County, Texas. Son of Sarah Caddell and grandson of Andy Caddell. John started punching cows in childhood, his father trained him and he started working for a neighbor, Henry Roder. When he was fourteen years old, he landed his first job with a big company, the Littlefield Cattle Company, ranging east to Roswell, New Mexico. When this company closed three years later he joined with the Diamond A, on the Hondo River, west of Roswell, where Captain Burton C. Mossmann, an original Arizona Ranger was Wagon Boss.

In 1893 a herd of 5,000 two-year-old steers of mixed brands were as-

sembled at Del Rio, Texas for trailing to Canadian line by way of Lamar, Colorado under Sug Robertson. In those days, he recalls, "There wasn't a fence from the Rio Grande to the Canadian Border, except around little homesteads, here and there. Open range". On that ride, lie went as far as the Milk River in Northern Montana, and never opened a gate all the way."

From the Mlilk River, John came down to the Crow Reservation of southern Montana in 1894 and at the age of 19, went to work for the Custer Cattle Company, McCormick, Johnson and Powers, owners, branding 7 Bar 7. Except for a short time around Thernlopolis, Wyoming, he has been in the Reservation country, punching cows and is still at the age of 83. John is with the Antler Ranch of Matt Tschirgi, on the Little Big Horn of Custer massacre fame. During the 50 years from 1898 to 1948, he never missed a day from his profession.

The 7 Bar 7 ran upwards of 25,000 cattle, from which John would cut 450 head a month under government contracts to feed the Indians and the militia.

"Steaks were steaks in those days, none of this modern baby beef stuff. The price was AYz cents a pound.

In Apr i l , 1896, he tangled with a pack of Canadian outlaws in the Missouri Brakes, one hundred and twenty-five miles from the nearest human habitation. In exchange of shots that followed, John caught a bullet in his right forearm, which lodged in the shoulder. A companion used their only first aid, a torn-up shirt tail, but it worked and he never had the slug removed. He lets his friends feel it and try to guess the caliber.

During the Boer War years of 1899-1902, the Custer Company joined with other ranches in providing horses for the British calvary. These had to be four-year-olds, "ridden" horses and were delivered at Brush, Colorado for $65 to $80 a head under contracts let by M . Moncrieffe of Big Horn, near Sheridan, Wyoming, representing >the British.

To "break" these horses, John and the other cowpokes would ride them three times and let the ocean voyage do the rest."

On a trip to Brush with a consignment of horses, John met and was entertained by Theodore Roosevelt and his daughter, Alice. "She was real nice, and we got on fine," he reports. Theodore guessed that the horses were so wild, they could k i l l more British than Boers.

The 7 Bar 7 closed out in 1906, and for the next ten years he worked for the Flying E of B. K . Hysham, running 40,000 head. He also worked for Smith Brothers of Hardin, Montana, one of the large steer outfits operating on the "Ceded Strip", branding Bar Z Bar, and the Quarter-circle Z L of Mack Daniels. When the Quarter-circle Z L went to Frank Heinrich, John went too.

Cupid slipped into John's life in 1920, when he made a trip to Kansas with a shipment of cattle. He found his future wife, quite naturally, in a cow pasture and spread his loop for her. Married on November 24, 1920. They have six children, two sons, four daughters, and eleven grandchildren.

John later returned to the Crow Reservation and worked for the Dana Cattle Company until 1937. E d Danna sold to Charles Miller and he worked another ten years under the Birdhead brand until it was sold in 1948.

Since then he has been with the Antler Ranch of Tschirgi, at Wyola, Montana. He is now 83 years old and still active and you wi l l find him doing business as usual, saddling up a bronc, branding or shipping cattle,

or at home in Wyola, Montana. He is called, "Montana's Dean of the Range". There's no Hollywood glamour to John Hammett but if you are looking for the "real thing" in rugged cow punchers, he's it according to Edmund Randolph of the Denver Post." For he has ridden more miles, punched more cows and been in more odd situations than all the screen heroes who ever passed before a camera put together."

John is spry and alert and keeps informed about the satellites and looks forward to moon travel." They'll get there some day!, and when they do I hope they don't find it all fenced up but some more open range.

John's health remains rugged, his eyes clear and piercing. It's rumored around the ranch lately that he suspected arthritis and decided on an X-ray. The Doctor said. "No sign of arthritis, but there's a bullet in your shoulder." He had forgotten about the one he received when he was 21 years old.

John Yancy, the father of James Richard Yancy, was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, June 22, 1815. His parents were Archie and Mary Yancy. There were no records of their births. John Yancy came to Texas in 1833, according the headright certificate issued to him by the Board of Land Commissioners of Nacogdoches County. It is stated that he came in 1833 to Texas and was married June 12, 1837 to Elizabeth McAnulty. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 3074 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 6, to June 6, 1836.

John Yancy was a member of Captain Haden Arnold's Nacogdoches Company at San Jacinto. He fought in the battle of Sam Jacinto and was there when Santa Anna surrendered.

On November 23, 1849, he was issued Donation Certificate No. 181 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto.

Elizabeth McAnulty was born September 30, 1820, Meridian, Mississippi. She had the following brothers and sisters.

1. James McAnulty, born July 6, 1817 2. Mary McAnulty, born December 10, 1818 3. Matilda McAnulty, August 23, 1822 4. Richard McAnulty, February 7, 1824 Elizabeth McAnulty married John Yancy, 1837. Yancy, born July 18, 1855; died June 27, 1903 4. James Richard Yancy, born October 31, 1859, died March 1930. John Yancy died in 1868, buried at Belton, Texas. His name'is on the

M O T H E R

(In memory of Lizzie Mitchell) Who died October 1, 1925

By A daughter, Ha Mitchell Conner

Years have passed, but thoughts of you I've kept, And many dreams I have had as I slept. But memories of our dear home, Wi l l forever with me stay. Memories of your love, And your kindness every day.

You watched o'er us when we were i l l , With never a tiring wil l , And o'ft times your needs were denied, So our wants might be supplied.

Oh how thankful we should be, For sacrifices you made, we see. And the patience and love you had each day, For such blessings we can never repay.

No matter what we did, Or what we said, Your love was always the same. And may we never bring dishonor to your name.

F A T H E R

(In m^morv of M. L. Mitchell) Who died March 18, 1936

By A daughter, Ha Mitchell Conner

When you passed away, There was another vacant place that day. Mother had gone on before, The joy of our home was never more.

Yet, while you lived, Your heart was still sad, Both places for us you filled. And because of that we're glad.

Doing for others was your delight, Yourself you would deny, For work you would never slight, No matter what it would imply.

How thankful, we are for a Dad, who was good and true. For one who lived a noble and useful life, Your faithfulness to God and Church we knew, Mav we live a iife that wil l be as true.

IN MEMORY OF RAYMOND L. MITCHELL

By

Ila Mitchell Conner

Since he passed away, our hearts have been made sad, Yet, many 'thoughts each day, have made us glad, Because of the noble and courageous life he lived, It has brought back many memories that wi l l not be stilled.

While fond memories of his childhood linger instead, Of many times he worked and played, Then off to school he went alone, To seek the knowledge that made him go on.

Reading was his favorite, It made him' stay up ;at night, Which gave him incite, And helped him to do right.

Then to college he was sent, To prepare himself for more, Working and studying as he went, He soon had made the score.

His aim was always onward, To other Universities he went, With a Dr's degree intent He worked and studied hard.

Then as a chemist, he became, His purpose was never to shirk, Hours overtime he spent at work To complete experiments that might be fame.

Yet fame he did not acclaim, He could always be found at his lab desk, Working as a chemist he was always the same, Very quiet and soft-spoken was picturesque.

But his home and family meant the most, The love and kindness he gave, Helped each to know how brave . He lived to the last.

IN MEMORY OF DANIEL YANCY

(Who bied April 12, 1945)

By Ila Mitchell Conner

He was only a lad. Yet duty's call was sad. In the States, only a few months training, And overseas he goes not complaining.

To fight for our native land, And protect us, so we might withstand. He gave his all, So that our country might not fall . The sacrifices he knew, When folks and home he bid adieu, To fight for us, ihe was brave,. To save others, his life he gave.

On the battlefield in 1945, he fell i n pain, Unknowing that he had a part in victory's gain. He died that hour in Germany for a cause he held divine, And was buried in Holland at an American National Shrine.
