The World TurnsPorts account for over 90% of the world’s trade and are vital to economic growth globally.
Yet it’s remarkable how few people seem to realise that. Which is probably why,
all too often, there’s a storm of protest when ports announce that they need to expand.
The past few years have really brought that home. As Europe and America struggle through
often decade-long environmental and regulatory inquiries to bring a port extension on stream,
China and other Asian countries power on. The gradual shift of world trade centres to the
Asia-Pacific region, coupled with their port projects, tells the story: it’s where container traffic
is growing the fastest, container shipping lines are the most numerous and the development
potential is enormous.
There are hopeful signs, however. As I write, major recent and continuing expansion projects
include Antwerp’s Deurganckdok; Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam; London’s Thames Gateway;
Bayport in Houston; CT8 in Savannah; Mobile’s Choctaw Point; Prince Rupert’s Fairview Terminal
and Port 2000 in Le Havre. But more are needed...
‘Matching all available capacity, including pending expansion projects, against trade
growth, terminals will just about manage in the next six years,’ warns Dutch think-tank
Dynamar. ‘After 2011, however, any slowdown in expansion activity will lead to a
sustained paucity of handling capacity.’
Dredging, of course, goes hand-in-hand with port expansion – indeed, with ports continuing to
operate: very few are lucky enough not to need maintenance dredging.
“I’m feeling positive – the first few months of 2005 were encouraging and there’s a lot
of work pending in the market.”
That was Royal Boskalis Westminster CEO Rob van Gelder’s view as both turnover and orders
climbed. We agree. The port projects outlined above, plus the immense reclamation projects
underway off Dubai and the recent settlement between Singapore and Malaysia, bode well for
the coming years.
DPC is going to be busy over the next 12 months keeping tabs on all this activity. But with our
mix of global news, features, case studies and informed opinion from industry experts, we’ll
be on site as much as possible, looking for solutions applicable worldwide – and keeping you
informed.
Tony Slinn, Editor-in-Chief
Dredging and Port Construction (DPC) was founded over 37 years ago with
a simple target: to be the leading international magazine for the world of
marine civil engineering and related activities. Our success and reputation in
the markets we serve has attracted affiliations from key associations – DPC is
honoured by both the Central Dredging Association (CEDA) and the Eastern
Dredging Association (EADA), who have chosen our title as their official
publication. DPC is also the official voice of CHIDA (the Chinese element of
EADA) and is an associate member of the International Association of Ports and
Harbors (IAPH).
DPC brings its readers monthly in-depth coverage of the latest technical
market developments; on-going research projects; conference & exhibition
reports and the latest in equipment and services. And its broad-based editorial
features programme is designed for port & harbour authorities, dredging
contractors and other marine professionals.
Which is why advertising in DPC is a sound business decision.
Our Roots “Ever since I joined the dredging world, I’ve been of the opinion that Dredging
and Port Construction is a magazine that provides valuable insights into the
ins & outs of the industry. The copies we receive in the office are immediately
snatched away from under my nose by colleagues and are read thoroughly. It
doesn’t only help us to stay up to date, but also gives background information
on projects, dredgers and the industry in general.”

Reaching the ReadersThe readers you need to reachPort Authorities, Dredging Contractors, Dredging Consultants and Hydrographic
Surveyors form the core of DPC’s circulation. Professionals within these businesses
are arguably the most influential buyers and specifiers of port engineering products
and services. A presence in DPC can make them your prospects and clients.
We’re sure you’ll get maximum return from your advertising in DPC because we have
researched the industry to provide you with a highly influential readership.
The circulation has been carefully monitored to verify our claims and reader research
suggests that each copy is read by 3.9 people. This means that the audited circulation
of 3,577 actually generates a readership of 13,950 potential decision makers.
Industry Breakdown
Geographic Breakdown
Without doubt, the Far East – and especially China – is the area to watch. One
reason why DPC, the official journal of both the Eastern Dredging Association
and the China Dredging Association, is also published in Mandarin and
reaches port executives, maritime engineers and dredging contractors
throughout the country and beyond.
China already controls between 20% and 25% of global import/export
container volumes and her recent accession to the World Trade Organisation
will provide a longer-term boost – by 2025, China will be the second largest
economy in the world after the USA.
DPC Americas, is a full-colour supplement designed to look at the many
port construction and dredging projects – along with related topics –
unique to the region.
Our coverage area is North America (the USA and Canada), Central and
South America plus the Caribbean and our remit includes port workboats,
oil spills, hydrographic survey, navaids, port equipment, small and
specialist dredgers, dredger design and consumables, support vessels,
heavy lift and transport, contaminated sediment treatment and the
beneficial use of dredged material, plus coastal engineering.
DPC is already the favourite choice for many members of the
Western Dredging Association (WEDA) and DPC Americas is not
only a new – and free – extra service for them, but
also reaches an extended list of port executives,
maritime engineers, consultants and
contractors in the region.
