TheWPTtrusteesconsidered that suchanawardwouldbenefithe parrots, first,by encouraging Initiatives inthisratherspecialised areaofconservation, andsecond, by providinganopportunity to publicise theplightof theparrots around theworld. TheCarolinaMedalcanbewonin fourdifferentcategories: 'Research & Management', whicheffectively coversmostfieldandveterinary activity;'Education', whichis capableof includingawiderangeof educational activities, targetedat schools, themedia, birdkeepersetc; 'Avicultural Endeavours', which opens thedoorfor many conservation-minded aviculturists; and'WelfarePractices', an opportunity for all concerned about howparrotsaretreated. WhentheWPTtrustees cameto reviewingthepotential award winners, It seemed clearthat, forthe firstCarolinaMedalatleast, the winnerwaslikelytocomefrom among thosepeopleand organisations workingonpreserving threatened parrotspecies in the wild. Apartfromtheparrotfield projectssupported bytheWorld ,, psittacine (sit'it sin) Belonging or allied to the ,, parrots; parrot -like ParrotTrustitself, therearemany otherprojectsaround theworld whichhavemeritanddeserve encouragement. Quiteafewof these, however, sufferfrom shortages of fundsorexpertise, eitherof whichtendtoremove them fromcontention for an award.
