Abdul A’la al-Mawdudi (1903-1979)

Biography of Mawdudi born on September 25, 1903, at Aurangabad in Hyderabad, India. Educated at home, later at the Madrasa Furqaniyya and finally

attended at the Dar al-‘Ulum in Hyderabad, India. Theologian, interpreter and journalist—editor of al-Jam’iyyat,1924-27 His major publications: Al-Jihād fi al-Islām (Jihad in Islam) (1927, 1930); Economic

problem of man and its Islamic solution (Lahore 1947); Ethical viewpoint of Islam (Lahore 1966); Political Theory of Islam (Delhi 1964); and Tafhīm al-Qurʾān, 6 vols. (Lahore 1949-72).

In 1941, he founded Jama’at al-Islami (JI) in British India, and elected as the president (al-amir) until 1972.

In 1947, he moved to Pakistan to support an Islamic State, and was arrested and imprisoned several times during the years 1948-1950 and 1953-1955 for his strong critique to the government.

In 1953, his legal judgment against the Ahmadis as un-Islamic resulted in violence in Pakistan, and its military court sentenced him to death for his sedition.

Died on September 22, 1979.
