In Hebrews 3:12, churchgoers were forewarned, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.”

Everyone in the church is admonished to see to it that he has no evil heart. It is with brotherly love that such an admonition is given. The author of Hebrews addressed them as “brethren” to show that his admonition is given, not out of any hard feelings or distrust or jealousy, but rather out of a loving care for their spiritual safety.

What does “an evil heart of unbelief ” imply? It implies negligence and rejection of divine truths while pursuing sin. Such a heart would not submit to the claims of the Gospel of Christ. Indifference to the grace exhibited in the Gospel would be apparent. It would refuse the application of the Gospel truths to itself. That is the ultimate sign of unbelief. Just as it is by faith that a person receives Christ as his Saviour and Lord, it must also be asserted that it is a vivid manifestation of unbelief if one rejects Him. As submission to Christ’s righteousness is the greatest act of faith, rejection of His righteousness is conversely the greatest act of unbelief.

Some openly reject Christ and scorn His Word. Others do so secretly by merely paying lip service in their profession

of faith. Their profession of faith is employed only as a cloak for their sins. While they claim to have given their hearts to Christ, they continue to yield themselves to hidden lusts lurking in their hearts. Their natural inclination is to sin, as sin reigns in them. It is impossible for unrestrained love for sin and faith in the Saviour to thrive in the same heart. While faith in Christ leads to sanctification, unbelief paves the way to more sins.

In an evil heart of unbelief, love for the world and for its pleasures, riches, honours always supersede the eternal things of God’s kingdom. In such a heart of unbelief, spiritual matters are deemed unworthy of its pursuit. Loss of material gain or comfort for Christ’s sake will not be tolerated, as it glories in the things of the world more than the things of Christ.

Such an evil, unbelieving heart will inevitably depart from the living God. Apostasy (or departure from God) first exists in one’s heart, and then is manifested in one’s life. Apostasy finally exposes the prideful, self-willed heart of an individual. Such departing from the living God is an immense evil and the greatest insult to God! It is the worst tragedy one can bring upon oneself. So brethren, be vigilant against the apostasy of your hearts.

The First Session of GBI-OnlineWe praise God for the first session of GBI-Online classes held last Wednesday night (7.45pm - 9.15pm). 23 brethren gathered to learn theology taught by Pastor Koshy; and the lessons were recorded for uploading in GBI website at a later time. We thank God for the hospitality of the TGCM brethren who have refurbished their meeting room for the commencement of GBI-Online classes. We covet your continued prayers and support for Gethsemane Bible Institute and its online ministries.

Thank God for Seeing Me Through “O” Levels Clara Jesse Lau

Thank God for how He saw me through a very stressful year, especially for how He sent me a trial along the way which turned out to be a blessing.

Two weeks before my Science Practical Assessments (SPAs) and three weeks before my final prelims, I came down with chickenpox and had a two-week long medical leave from school. It seemed like the worst time to be down with such an illness, as I had to miss the crucial time frame when the teachers were about to complete their syllabuses and giving tips for the upcoming SPAs and prelims. On top of that, I was still struggling to cope with some subjects.

However, God’s hand was working even in the seemingly disastrous situation. God relieved me of the pain of the illness and I was still able to study despite being sick. In fact, the long medical leave gave me time to work on my weaker subjects and study at my own pace, which would not be possible had I attended lessons as usual. My absence also resulted in my teachers and classmates becoming more approachable and willing to help me in my work. Somehow, the “hiatus” turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It was essential in helping me get back on track and with God’s continued grace, I could go on working to improve.

At first, I did not perceive this abrupt illness and absence from school during a crucial study period to be a blessing. Instead, I thought it would just make my already difficult situation worse. However, I realise it was simply God helping me in ways I could not understand nor appreciate, for He knew what was best for me. Hence I would like to commit my results to Him and may all glory be to God.

Struggles are real, but God is greater than all my struggles, feelings and cares. His plan for me may be very different from what I expect it to be; but as stated in Rom 8:28, all things will work out for good for those who love Him. ‘Good’ need not refer to great results, but rather to learn to trust Him and to love Him.

All glory be to God :)

Have You Been Numbering Your Days?

age

man’s life on earth is limited by God. no one can live beyond the time set by God. even a child cannot be sure whether he will live into his teenage years or into adulthood. even if one would live to a ripe old age, those years will pass very quickly.

so moses, who wrote Psalm 90, prayed to God to “teach us to number our days”. In other words, it is a prayer to help us remember that the days of our lives on earth will quickly come to an end. With God’s help, we will be wise to realise that with each passing day, we are closer to the end of our life on earth. at the end of each day, let us remember that the number of opportunities for us to live for God and to fulfil our responsibilities is irreversibly reduced.

If we wait for the end of each year to remind us of the nearness of our lives’ end, we would have let 365 days slip by unaccounted for. It is far better to take stock of the shortness of our life by each passing day than on a yearly, or monthly, or even weekly basis. suppose a school student prepares for his final exams only at the end of the school year – he will definitely not do well! a wise student will instead work hard every day of his school year so as to do well in the final exams. likewise, if we learn to make every day of our lives count for God’s glory, we will rejoice when we meet our lord, the Judge.

Therefore, we must pray for God’s help for us to wisely use our daily opportunities to please and glorify God. That is why moses also prayed “that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”.
