The word of the Lord remains forever. This is the word that has been proclaimed to you.
La palabra de Dios permanece para siempre. Y ésa es la palabra que se les ha anunciado.
Like Timothy, Christ’s call is meant for us. Good stewards have
everything necessary to live for Christ. “Stir up the fire that is al-
ready burning inside you.” Use your gifts now! Get involved now!
God put the fire inside you but you have to stir up the flame! Let it
burn!” Everyone can give witness to Christ’s presence in the world,
and most of us can do more than one thing for the Lord.

Catholic Stewardship Appeal to begin October 8-9!
The diocesan Catholic Stewardship Appeal begins in our parish next weekend, October 8-9. Bishop Gaydos’ appeal letter should arrive in your mailbox sometime during the week of October 2nd. The CSA theme this year comes from Pope Francis’ latest writing on the fami-ly, “The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia)” He encourages us to continue “walking together,” reminding us that “what we have been promised is greater than we can imagine.” We are a Catholic family called as one to serve our God and each other. When you receive your CSA letter, please prayerfully consider it along with the enclosed information to determine what offering you can make to support the work of our diocese.

From today’s second reading, we are
made to realize, like Timothy, that
Christ’s call is meant for us all. Good
stewards realize they have everything
necessary to live for Christ. “Stir up the
fire that is already burning inside you.”
Another way to express this thought in the
vocabulary of stewardship is, “Use your
gifts now! Serve the Lord now! Get invol-
ved now! God put the fire inside you but
you have to stir up the flame! Let it
burn!” Everyone can give witness to
Christ’s presence in the world, and most
of us can do more than one thing for the
Lord. How exactly do you stir into flame
God’s unique gifts you hold within you?

(America) Does going to Mass each week make American Catholics fall in line with church teaching on issues like contraception, abortion and L.G.B.T. rights? Not necessarily. That’s according to a Pew Re-search Center report released Sept. 28, which measured the attitudes of Americans on three culture-war fronts that in recent years have clashed with religious liberty: whether vendors like bakers and florists can refuse to cater to same-sex weddings; whether transgender people can choose which bathroom to use; and whether em-ployers can opt out of providing insur-ance plans that cover contraception. Most American Catholics, includ-ing those who go to church on a regu-lar basis, have no moral problem with contraception, the survey found. Just 8 percent said contraception is moral-ly wrong, with 89 percent saying it was either morally acceptable or not a moral issue at all. The Catholic Church teaches that artificial contra-ception, such as condoms and birth control pills, is morally unacceptable. This teaching is rejected even among Catholics who attend Mass at least weekly, who tend to hold views on other social issues that fall more in line with official teaching when com-pared to the wider Catholic popula-tion. About one in 10 (13 percent) in this group said contraception is moral-ly wrong, with 87 percent saying it is either acceptable or not a moral issue. In recent years, many Catholic institutions have sparred with the fed-eral government over a rule that re-quires employers to provide insurance plans that cover contraception. Some

US Catholics hold mixed
views on religious liberty
issues By Editor, Catholic News,
September 28, 2016
(Religious liberty concluded) Catholic leaders have argued that doing so would make them com-plicit in behavior they find sinful, thus violating their religious free-dom The Pew poll found that a majority of U.S. Catholics seem to reject that argument. Sixty-five percent of Catholics say employers should not be able to opt out of the law based on religious objections, while 32 percent say they should. Those numbers are nearly identical to the views of the U.S. population as a whole. On the issue of abor-tion, 83 percent of U.S. Catholics who attend services regularly say it is morally wrong.
