The story

was written downby Joel Chandler Harris,

over a hundred yearsago,

but the real story

is much older.

He got it fromthe SouthernPlantation folks whoprobably heard itfrom the Indians,or their ancestorsback in Africa.

Or maybethey made it upthemselves.

They werereally good story tellers.Who knows?

Anyway it wasnt me.

This a story of a fox

trying to catch a rabbitfor his dinner.

Well one day,

Brer Fox (or brotherfox,we would say today)was in need of somelunch,

and thought a youngrabbit would do nicely.

He had seen Brer Rabbitearlierand he looked mightytasty.But rabbits are hard to

catch.Brer Fox was slyand thought of himself

as very smart.Smarter than a rabbit,at least.

So he wentand got himself sometar.

Tar is the thick blackstuff they used formaking

the roof waterproof.

Then you dont get wetwhen it rains.

Then he got someturpentine which is likeour paint thinneror gasoline.

He mixed them togetherand made a sticky goop.

Then he made a ball

out of sticks and straw,

and shaped it upin the form of a baby.

And covered itwith the sticky tar.

Brer Fox said to himself

This is a fine Tar-

BabyWhoever touches itwill stick fast,

and be trapped!

He pushed his Tar-Babyout in the middleof the country road.Brer Fox backed up

and hid in the bushes,and waited to seewhat would happen.

He was gettingmore and more hungry.

And he didnt havelong

to wait.Here comes BrerRabbit hopping down

the road.Lippity-clippity,cliffity-lippity

Just as happy as a jay-bird!Brer Fox he just lay low.

Brer Rabbitcome prancing alonguntil he saw the Tar-Baby,right in the middleof the road all alone.

Well,he set upon his hind legsquite astonished.

The Tar Baby just satthere!Brer Fox just lay low.

Good Morning to you,

said Brer Rabbit, veryproper.

Nice weather thismorning.

The Tar-Babydidnt say anything.

Brer Fox just lay lowin the bushes.

"My,but you seem to havesome powerfulsymptoms,"

says Brer Rabbit.

The Tar-Babydid look pretty sick.

Brer Fox,he winked his eyes slow,

and continued to lay low.

And the Tar-Baby,she is still totally quiet.

"Come on now,say something!

Are you deaf?"

continues Brer Rabbit,getting upset."Because, if you are,

I can speak louder."The Tar-Baby just stays

still,

and Brer Fox,

he just lay low.

Youre stuck up,that's what you are,"says Brer Rabbit."I'm going to punch you,

that's what I'm going todo!"Brer Fox,

he sort of chucklesin his stomach,but still he lay low.

But Tar-Babystill doesn't moveor say anything.

"I'm going to teach youto speakwhen spoken toby respectable folks,"

says Brer Rabbit,

And if you don't take off

that hat

and tell me howdy!"

Tar-Baby, she stays still,

and Brer Fox, he lay low.

Brer Rabbit keeps onasking,and the Tar-Babykeeps on saying nothing.Well,

presently Brer Rabbitdraws back with his fist,he did.

And Blip!he struck her on the sideof her head,he did.

His fist stuck,and he couldn't pull itloose.

The gooey Tar-Babyheld him fast!But Tar-Baby,she just stayed still,


"If you don't let meloose,I'll knock you again!"

says Brer Rabbit.

And with that,he fetched her a swipe

with the other paw.And that stuck, too.

But Tar-Baby,she still stayed still,

and Brer Fox,he still lay low.

"Turn me loose or I'llknock the stuffing out ofyou!says Brer Rabbit.

But Tar-Baby,she still was sayingnothing.

She is hit and kicked,

and kicked and hit,some more.And Brer Rabbit

soon looses the useof his front pawsand back feet.But Tar-Baby,

she still says nothing,

Brer Rabbit yells out,

that if she doesn'tlet him loose,

he would butt her

with his head, he would.And then, after thiswarning,

he did butt her with hishead, and HARD,he did.

You guessed it,his head got stuck,

too.

Then Brer Fox,he quit laying low.

He just strolled up

to the stuck rabbit,acting as innocentas a mocking bird.

"Howdy, Brer Rabbit,"says he.

"You look sort of stuckupthis morning.

And the then he lolledon the groundand laughed and

laughed,and laughedtill he could laugh no

more.

I expect you'll takedinner with me this time,

Brer Rabbit,and I don't take any

excuses.

and he drug off therabbitby the tail,

which was about theonly part not coveredwith tar.

The Tar-Babysure didnt look likea baby anymore.

Well,did the fox eat the

rabbit,you ask?

I don't know.

It's just a story.It can have any ending

you want.

I like to thinkthe rabbit got away,

which would be goodfor Brer Rabbit.

And not too badfor Brer Fox either,

because dinnerflavored with turpentinetastes terrible!
