    Foreword

Although my grandfather Leonard Wolverton's parents names 'Joseph and Sarah'were engraved on one end of his headstone in the Upper Knoxford, Carleton Co.,NB cemetery, nothing further was known regarding our Wolverton ancestors. As achild, I recall my father visiting cemeteries collecting data for a distant cousin inWoodstock, NB. This information was submitted to a genealogist in the US whowas researching the Wolverton family. The researcher died before a planned bookcould be published and a copy of the data did not survive.

After visiting Wolverton, Ontario in 1997, my daughter Lynn decided to contactdescendants of the family that founded the town to determine if a connection couldbe made. Lois E. Darroch, a Wolverton descendant and former resident ofWolverton, Ontario suggested contacting her cousin Harold Wolverton inVancouver. Hand written documents in his possession connected our family withJoseph Barton Woolverton who had immigrated from New Jersey to NewBrunswick following the American Revolution in 1783. Although Harold's chartscontained an error in regards to the name of Joseph Barton Woolverton's father, hisinformation provided the key in resolving the Wolverton family New Brunswickconnection.

Thanks to input from genealogist James D. "Dan" Hitt of Gillette, Wyoming, thefather of Joseph Barton Woolverton was identified as Empire Loyalist Thomas (b1735) rather than John. Additional information regarding Empire Loyalist ThomasWolverton and his family was provided by researcher Mary W. Wallace ofRochester, Minnesota. Information obtained from these sources was later comparedto David A Macdonald's book 'The Woolverton Family 1693 - 1850 and Beyond'published in July 2001. The long held theory that Joseph Barton Woolverton'slineage was John, Isaac, Charles W. was proven incorrect.

The task of preparing our family tree and placing genealogy reports on a FamilyTree Maker home page started as a simple project. Initial input for the data basewas taken from 'Family Work Sheets' completed by my sister Christine Davies ofWoodstock, NB and cousin Carolyn Beckwith of Wollaston, MA. The project wassoon expanded to include all descendants of Empire Loyalist Thomas Woolverton.Numerous people have provided input regarding their family members. Alsogreatly appreciated, were the complete family trees provided by the following

Genealogy Report of Thomas Woolverton (1735) Ancestors andDescendants

    Generation No. 1

    1. Charles W1 Woolverton was born 1660 in Wolverhampton,Staffordshire, England, and died 1746 in Rosemont, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Hemarried Mary Elizabeth Chadwick 1697 in West Jersey. She was born 1674 inSpringfield, Burlington, NJ, and died 1751 in Kingwood Township, NJ.

    Notes for Charles W Woolverton:

Charles W Woolverton, who immigrated from England to America in 1682, wasthe progenitor of the Woolverton and Wolverton families in United States andCanada. The family was an old one in England, appearing under various formsof spelling, as for example, Wolfreton, Wolferston, Woolverstone, Woolverton, and Wolverton. Early records of the family are found in books on the history ofthe Isle of Wight. The oldest spelling appears to be Wolfreton, based on athirteenth century record indicating that Sir Ralph de Wolfreton contributed twobowmen to defend the island. Other Isle of Wight records indicate thatdescendents of Sir Ralph changed the spelling to Woolverton.

Another traditional derivation of the name is based on the theory that the familyseat, more than a thousand years ago, was near Wolverhampton, and that thefamily name was connected with the founding of the city. There is also a town inMiddle England called Wolverton. A Book of Heraldry in the U of T Libraryincludes two Woolverton coat of arms. One shows three wolf heads with themotto ' Que Sera Sera '. Another shield dating back to Henry III, belonged to aWolverton family in Wolverton Parish, Buckinghamshire. An eagle is displayedover a belt of fire arms.

During the reign of Charles II of England, there was little religious liberty forProtestants. Many men with strong religious convictions, moved with theirfamilies to America. These men were of various religious groups such asPuritans, Independents, Quakers and Churchmen who secured from the Crown, large estates in what is now known as Pennsylvania and New Jersey. CharlesWoolverton who was a Quaker, disposed of his property in England and sailed

    to America.

It is said that Charles Woolverton, with his two brothers Gabriel and John aswell as friends George Fox and William Penn, sailed from Dorsetshire Englandto America in 1682. A more detail account told a century later by a descendentof Charles (Elizabeth Woolverton b. 1774), indicated that they sailed on the shipWelcome and landed at Newcastle, Delaware on November 1, 1682; that Gabrieland John died of small pox; and that they settled on Long Island and relocated toBurlington County, New Jersey in 1689. None of these facts have been verifiedas the earliest record of Charles W Woolverton in America is a land purchase of100 acres in Burlington County, NJ from William Biddle dated 20 August,1693. There are 16 recorded land transfers in New Jersey made by Charlesbefore his death in 1746. With the exception of legal documents, little is knownabout his life and last days. He wrote a number of religious tracts of which threehave survived. There is no documented record of his parents in England. Formore information refer to the book ' The Woolverton Family 1693 - 1850 andBeyond ' by David A Macdonald and Nancy N McAdams published July 2001.

Notes for Mary Elizabeth Chadwick:The identity of Mary's father remains undetermined. Mary was born prior to hermother Elizabeth's three recorded marriages. Her mother married Isaac Leet in1685, followed by John Chadwick in 1688, and John Dickson at a later date. The name Mary Chadwick is generally accepted as being the wife of Charles asher mother Elizabeth was still married to John Chadwick in 1697 when Maryand Charles were married.

Notes for Mary Woolverton:The evidence that there was a daughter Mary is circumstantial andthin. A Mary Sherman was appointed administrator of the estate ofThomas Pettit to replace Thomas Woolverton who had resigned. Ithas been assumed but not proven that Mary was ThomasWolverton's sister.

    Generation No. 3

    11. Thomas3 Woolverton (Thomas2, Charles W1) was born 1735 inRosemont, Hunterdon Co, NJ, and died 11 Sep 1819 in Northampton, CarletonCo., NB. He married (1) Elizabeth Crowell 1757 in NJ. She was born 1740,and died Unknown. He married (2) Catharine Barton Bef. 1777. She wasborn 1750 in NJ, and died 1840 in Northampton, Carleton Co., NB.

Notes for Thomas Woolverton:Thomas Woolverton was the son-in-law of Col. Joseph Barton, the mostnotorious Loyalist of Sussex County. In 1777, Thomas along with the Pettit andBarton families were identified as Tories by the local authorities. He wasconvicted under a law providing that any person who aided the enemy betweenApril 1775 and October 1776 and did not take an oath of allegiance to the statewas subject to conviction for high treason and forfeiture of his property. Hespent six months in jail and on April 17, 1780, his confiscated property inSussex County, NJ was sold at auction. Where the family lived between 1780and 1783 is not known, but they may have gone to Washington Co. PA to livewith his brother John's family until the end of the American Revolution in 1783.

In July 1783 Thomas-3 and his family sailed from NY to Saint John, NB on theship Lord Townsend. The passengers list shows Thomas with one female(Catharine Barton Woolverton), two children older than 10 (Elizabeth AnnWoolverton, Ann Barton) and three children younger than 10 (Joseph BartonWoolverton, Barent Barton, Charlotte Barton). His two eldest sons from his first

marriage, Thomas(22) and Joseph(19) remained with Their Uncle John in PAand never immigrated to Canada.

The Wolverton, Barton and Pettit families settled on farm land in Maugerville,Sunbury Co., NB located a few miles south of Fredericton on the opposite sideof the St. John river. Thomas Woolverton's 1789 land grant of 500 acres waslocated next to the Barton's land grant. In 1796 Thomas was granted 262 acresof land in Northampton, Carleton County., NB. He relocated his family to thenew farm in Northampton which is located just south of Woodstock on theopposite side of the Saint John river. Additional grants in the same area werereceived in 1813 by Thomas and his son Joseph. The land was farmed for manygenerations by Thomas Wolverton's descendents. Thomas-3 was the progenitorof 'Wolvertons with a NB connection '.

Note from book 'The Wolverton Family 1693 - 1850 and Beyond ':"Based on St. Luke's Church records in Woodstock, Thomas Wolverton, 76, ofthe Parish of Northampton, NB, was buried in that parish on 14 September1819. His age appears to have been recorded in error based on the fact that hesigned a legally binding document in 1758 and was the eldest son of Thomas-2.Based on this information he was born in 1735 rather than 1742. No record hasbeen located regarding his wife's birth or Death."

"The only evidence that Thomas-3 had two sons named Joseph is based on thefact that property in PA was registered to a Joseph Wolverton before JosephBarton Wolverton was of age. No other evidence of his existence has beenfound."

She was born 1781 inMaugerville, Sunbury Co., NB, and died 15 Aug 1853 in Northampton, CarletonCo., NB.

Notes for Joseph Barton Woolverton:Joseph Barton Woolverton was 6 years old when his Empire Loyalist father(Thomas-3) immigrated from the US to Maugerville, Sunbury Co., NB in 1783.Joseph's mother (Catharine Barton) and his half sister (Elizabeth Ann) were theonly other family members that came with them. Half brothers Thomas andJoseph went to live with their uncle John Woolverton in Washington County,PA and never immigrated to NB. A younger brother (James Barton) was born inMaugerville, NB in 1785 but immigrated to the United States following analtercation (based on family stories) with his father and brother Joseph.

The Woolverton farm in Maugerville was a short distance from the land grantedto Dr. John Larlee in 1787. Dr Larlee immigrated from France and was the firstwhite doctor on the Saint John river. Joseph married John Larlee's daughter Janein 1798 and moved further up the St. John River to his father's farm inNorthampton, which had been obtained as a land grant in 1796. Their first child(1 of 11) was born in Northampton in 1799. Additional Northampton land grantswere made to Joseph, his father Thomas, John Larlee Sr. and John Larlee Jr. in1818. Six additional land grants totalling 650 acres were obtained by Joseph

Barton Wolverton and his male descendents during the eighteen hundreds.Joseph's first born son (Thomas Thatcher Woolverton) continued the familytrend of settling further up the St. John River by purchasing a farm in River deChute, Wicklow Parish, in 1832.

Note: There are a number of minor conflicts with data for Joseph BartonWoolverton in the book ' The Woolverton Family 1693-1850 and Beyond 'published July 2001. (1) Joseph was born in 1777 in Sussex County NJ - not1779-1780 in Washington County, PA. Joseph Woolverton's head stone in St.Luke's Cemetery, Lower Woodstock, NB indicates that Joseph was 66 years oldwhen he died on 26 April 1843. Joseph's age at death is also confirmed by VitalStatistics Vol 10 item #917 dated 6 May 1843. The Anglican ChurchNorthampton Parish Register (archives film F1056) indicates Joseph died at age63. This hand written church document #206 is very clear but a recording errorappears to have been made. (2) Joseph and Jane were married Nov 17, 1798 -not Nov 17, 1799. The hand written church record (Archive film F8508 record#3) confirms the 1798 marriage date.

Notes for Tilman L Wolverton:The Wolvertons - LimestoneCounty PioneersAs Told By William Clarence Wolverton (1867-1955)

"My grandfather, Tillman Wolverton, and his wife Aguer (McVickers) wereborn, reared and married in Illinois. ( note by Wm. D. Gorman on July 19, 2000:Her name was Agnes, and both were born in Virginia, they were married andlived for 8 years in Lawrence County, Ohio before moving to Illinois and then toTexas ). In 1842 they joined a group of immigrants with ox drawn PrairieSchooner (wagons) and started for the Republic of Texas arriving at TennesseeColony (Anderson County) in 1843. In early 1844 they traveled to the west bankof Plummer's Creek, one mile west of where Mexia is today. An old sea piratenamed John Franks who had been run out of Galveston Island by the U.S.Government had "squatted" on their land, built a dugout and covered it with drybuffalo hides to live in and protect himself from the Tehuacanas, Waco and

    Comanche Indians.

Tillman Wolverton traded John Franks two yoke of oxen and a wagon for hisdug-out home and his claim on all the land around as far as the eye could see. This land (at that time) was in Roberton County, Republic of Texas in 1844. In1846, Limestone County was created out of Robertson County. TillmanWolverton and his family were one of the thirteen families that organizedLimestone County.

In the spring of 1846 Tillman built four log houses with dirt floors so the familycould move out of the dugout house. In 1848 a log courthouse was built atSpringfield (near Navasota River) the first county seat of Limestone County.

Tillman Wolverton started the first stagecoach line to haul United States mailand passengers from Springfield to Washington-On-The-Brazos. The TehuacanaIndians were friendly to white settlers and grandfather would let the men andsquaws ride on his stagecoach to help keep the Comanche Indians from stealingthe horses or holding up the stagecoach.

Tillman and Aguer (Agnes) had seven children. My father was John Wolverton. When the Civil War started in 1860 he left home to fight and when the warended in 1865, he was in Homer, Louisiana. It was there that he met and marriedMattie L Evans, my mother, in December 1865. They had four children - threegirls and myself. I was horn July 7, 1867.

Settling in Limestone County stopped during the war years. After 1865grandfather Tillman hauled pine lumber with ox wagons from (the) TennesseeColony saw mills to Limestone County to build houses. With the help of his ex-slaves, George Savage and Jack Anderson, it took six weeks to make the roundtrip using three yoke of oxen to each wagon. (the distance between TennesseeColony and Mexia was about 60 miles as the crow flies)

In 1870 Groesbeck was the terminal of the H&TC Railroad. The land forGroesbeck was given to the railroads by the Anglins to locate the town. In 1874the old pine lumber courthouse at Springfield burned along with all the countyrecords. A county election was held to move the county seat from Springfield toGroesbeck, the center of the county and a railroad town between eight and tenthousand people." (Tillman/Tilman died in 1874 at the age of 67).

Notes for Samuel Woolverton:In 'The Wolverton Family - 1693-1850 and Beyond' (page 597), it is assumedthat Samual born 1837 was the son of Thomas Woolverton and Phoebe Scottbased on the 1850 census. The comment that "he seems to have died young , asin a letter dated 4 April 1917, N. Woolverton reported that Mary L. (Worden)Woolverton, --- had named as children of Thomas only Henry, Kitty, Elizabeth",is added as a comment. The fact that James Barton Woolverton age 66 andSamuel Woolverton age 12 were included in the 1850 census of the Thomashousehold, but not in later census reports, suggests that they were both visitors. The logical conclusion is that there was only one Samuel Woolverton born in1837. He was the son of James Barton Woolverton as shown in the 1840 and1850 census and confirmed by a documented interview with Samuel's 89 yearold wife Mary L Worden Woolverton (page 246).

Notes for Elizabeth Woolverton:In the second half of the19th century an attractive young woman namedElizabeth Woolverton grew up in her parents' home in Northampton, NewBrunswick. She was popular with friends of both sexes. Two young men wereespecially attracted to her. Their names were William Howard Kearney andHenry Augustus Orr. Little is remembered about Mr. Orr's family. Mr. Kearney

was a member of a prosperous farming family.

Kearney was Deeply in love with Elizabeth and hoped to marry her. He went toWoodstock and purchased a pretty engagement ring in a velvet-covered box. There was a gathering being held at the Kirk, the community house of worshipand Kearney planned to drive Elizabeth to her home following the meeting. Onthe way he wanted to give her the ring as he proposed marriage.

On that particular evening Kearney was longer than usual in completing hisshare of the barn chores. He hurriedly harnessed the family driving horse, hooked up the sleigh and travelled toward the Kirk. Arriving there as themeeting was just about over, he waited outside with horse and sleigh inreadiness. Imagine his disappointment when Elizabeth appeared arm and armwith Henry Orr. Kearney's disappointment turned to anger and the two youngmen began to argue. The argument became a fight with both young men rollingin the snow. A knife came into play and soon Orr lay on the ground with hisblood staining the snow. Mr. Orr did not survive this encounter. (February 23,1867)

Kearney left the scene, returning to his parents' home. He was charged withmurder. When the trial was held Kearney's lawyer obtained an acquittal (Sept.26, 1867). Soon young Mr. Kearney left for western Canada or western UnitedStates where he remained for many years.

Later Elizabeth Woolverton married John James Rogers of Northampton. TheRogers had 3 sons and 4 daughters. After Mr. Rogers died, Elizabeth married aMr. Patchell from Whittepitlack, Maine and resided there for 10 or more years.Following Mr. Patchell's death Elizabeth returned to Northampton to live outher remaining years with her son Harry T. Rogers. When Elizabeth died , at aripe old age, she was buried in the Kirk cemetery. Meanwhile Mr. Kearney hadreturned to Northampton and he, too, is buried in the Kirk cemetery. It isreported that Henry Orr is buried in the same burial ground.

In the 1930's, Hedley and Cora Slipp purchased the Kearney homestead. One ofthe stipulations in the bill of sale stated that Mrs. Kearney, the widow ofWilliam Kearney's brother was to live with the Slipp family fora stipulated time. Cora Slipp's daughter-in-law told me that Mrs. Kearney hadshowed her (Cora) a pretty little velvet-covered box containing a lovely ringgiven to her by her brother-in-law many years before. She told Cora that all theyears Kearney had been away, the ring in its velvet box lay buried under a floor-

    Notes for Edwin Thatcher Wolverton:

Edwin left the River de Chute family farm at an early age to work in Coloradomining camps. There is no record of when he left NB or what enticed him toseek employment so far from home. His younger brother Leonard joined him in1883 lured by the high wages available for driving horses in the Coloradolumber woods. The following newspaper article in the Woodstock Sentinelindicates that in 1887 Edwin married 'Wilmot E Sipprelle' (Wilmont EldridgeSiprell) from Somerville, NB who was teaching school in Redcliff, Colorado.Another article mentions that Edwin's wife "returned" to her parents home inSomerville NB from Gilman, Colorado in 1890. As no mention was made of herhusband or children, it was assumed that they had separated or that he had died. This assumption was proven incorrect in 2003 when information regardingEdwin Thatcher Wolverton's descendants was provided by his great-grandchildren Ruth Linda Granat and Thatcher Edwin Wolverton, Ted Jr. of

Vol 68 #1424 dated Nov 26, 1887. Letter 2 from E. W. Bower entitled 'Letterfrom Tourist'."After taking in all the places at Leadville, I took the train for Red Cliff somefifty miles distant. This is one of Colorado's mining camps. Engaging a pair ofhorses and a driver we attempt the ascent of the mountain, by a circuitous routewith an ascent of several hundred feet and after a tedious upgrade of many mileswe reach Camp Gilmor, one of the finest mining towns in Colorado. Here wefind a number of New Brunswickers. One Edward Wolverton of N.B. had strucka rich treasure in the person of Miss Wilmot Sipprelle of Summerville (CarletonCounty). They had been there but a few months previous. This lady taught a dayschool and organized a Sabbath school. ....I intended visiting Aspen, anothermining district, where my cousin G. W. Boyer of Florenceville and familyreside. A gentleman who drives a stage to this place informed me that he knewBoyer, who is doing a thriving business cutting lumber and sawing it forbuilding and mining purposes with a portable saw mill. He has spent severalyears in Kansas where he made a large farm, but having to endure disadvantageson account of distance from a railroad, has moved to Aspen. Now that therailroad has reached his property in the first named place, he will return. Hisfamily and son-in-law moved to Aspen this season. On account of having tostage it for fifty miles, I had to abandon my intended visit to Aspen." (Note: Theletter from E. W. Bower containes a number of errors but is printed here the wayit appeared in the Carleton Sentinel newspaper. Camp Gilmor should read CampGilman. Edward Wolverton should read Edwin Wolverton and Wilmot Sipprelle(Wilmont Siprell) was from Somerville, NB not Summerville.)

    COLORADO LETTER __________________

"MESSRS. EDITORS, - Having just received the latest issue of the SENTINEL,and enjoyed the breath of home, which it always brings, the thought came thatperhaps your readers might be interested or amused by a page from ourmountain life.

Gilman, the little town in which we are living, is situated on a point of land, which terminates in a bluff, which rises perpendicularly from the Eagle River toa height of 1,000 feet. Winding through the canon [canyon] beside the river isthe D. & R. G. which carries away the mineral unearthed here, and brings in theneeded supplies.

But I will leave those things for some other correspondent, and confinemyself to giving you description of a day's sport which I enjoyed recently withMrs. Brown, of Kilburn, N.B. who is visiting here at present.

Accompanied by some friends, we left home at 8 a. m. fully equipped withrods, flies, etc., to deal death to the tinny [tiny] tribes which inhabit themountain streams. At this time in the morning it is delightfully cool here, andthe air is so pure and exhilarating that one feels that a tramp over the hills isvery enjoyable indeed. The views that lay before us are beyond my power toportray to you in any words; we followed the road over the hills and below us,far beneath, rushed on the river, leaping over huge boulders, charging againstimpregnable cliffs, then whirling, eddying, flying onward again, while on eitherside, as far as can be seen, rise the mountains, peak above peak, each one moredistant than the other; the lower ones clothed in rich green verdure, with flowersof many forms and colors; the higher ones grim, gray and awful in theirsublimity.

One place, which we passed, called "The Hole in the Rock," deserved to benoticed for a moment, so we stop to admire it. This is a strange looking place;several hundred feet back from the river rises an immense boulder resting on avery small base, and shaped very much as the famous balance rock, of whichyou have no doubt seen many views; through the centre of the upper part of thisrock is a large hole, large enough for eight persons to stand in and look down tothe depths below; above, the hill slopes gradually so that one can easily walkinto it; all around the exterior of this strange opening we could plainly see theaction of water at some time and could arrive at no conclusion other than thatwater had flown through it at some remote period and worn it to its presentshape.
