ACT ONEScene 1

THE KANSAS PRAIRIE

/17 OPENING (Orchestra with Girls Chorus)

The curtain rises on a scene showinga small dirt road amidst the wideopen spaces of the Kansas prairie.A line of telegraph poles stretchesinto infinity. The sky is vast.Somewhere off-stage a small dogbarks which is the cue for DOROTHYGALE, a small girl in a checkeddress to run breathlessly on-stage.

/2/ TROUBLE IN SCHOOL (DOROTHY's ENTRANCE) (Orchestra)

Oh Jeepers!breathe.

SHE stops stage center and puts a handto HER chest.

DOROTHYMy heart's thumping so loud I can't hardly

(SHE looks round)Toto. Toto.

(SHE sees the dog off-stage andcrouches down beckoning to HIM)

No need to be scared anymore. She ain't followin' us. I won'tlet her touch you nohow. Toto! Toto!

(Suddenly the little mut scampers onstage and leaps into HER arms) -

There you go.Toto.

DOROTHYDid she hurt you? She tried to, didn't she? Oh

(SHE hugs HIM to HER and looks backin the direction SHE came from)

She must be the meanest old woman that ever was.(SHE holds HIM up and looks intoHIS face)

Let's go tell Uncle Henry and Auntie Em. They'll take care ofher.

(SHE puts TOTO down and continues'along the road)

1-1-2

(As DOROTHY runs, the stage revolvesand from either side two trucksenter, one containing aportion of white picket fenceand swing gate, in front ofwhich is a small agriculturalrake on wheels: The otherhouses a chicken incubator. Thesound of week old chicks fillsthe stage. AUNT EM and UNCLE HENRYare transferring the chicks fromthe incubator to a box with ablanket draped inside it)

DOROTHYAunt Em! Aunt Em!

(The two adults go on working)

DOROTHYAunt Em!

AUNT EMFifty-seven, Fifty eight--

DOROTHYJust listen to what Miss Gultch did to Toto! She--

AUNT EMDorothy, please! We're trying to count! Fifty-eight--

DOROTHYOh, but Aunt Em, she hit him--

UNCLE HENRYDon't bother us now honey. You see, this'old incubator's gonebad and we're likely to lose a lot of our chicks.

DOROTHYOh, - oh, the poor little things.

(SHE reaches into the box and liftsout a chicken which SHE strokesduring the next speech)

Oh, but Aunt Em, Miss Gultch hit Toto right over the back witha rake just because she says he gets in her garden and chasesher nasty old cat every day!

AUNT EMSeventy. Dorothy, please!

(AUNT EM sees the chick in DOROTHY'shands, takes it from HER and replacesit in the box)

AUNT EMDorothy! We're busy!

(AUNT EM places the final chickensin HER outstretched apron andhurries off-stage)

DOROTHYUncle Hen~y. Can't you do something?

UNCLE HENRYI'm doing something right now honey so just keep out of ourhair.

(UNCLE HENRY lifts up the box and exitsafter HIS wife. The noise of the chicksfades and is replaced by a squeaking noise)

DOROTHYOh -- all right.

(DOROTHY turns to see the three farmhandsZEKE (LION), HICKORY (TINMAN) and HUNK(SCARECROW) entering shoving a small wagonwith three wheels. It contains variousitems of farm equipment including theremains of a scarecrow. ZEKE propels thefourth wheel along the ground)

HICKORYWho was the genius suggested we move the wagon before the wheelwas on?

HUNKIt ain't so heavy with one wheel less. That makes sense, don'tit?

HICKORYSense or no sense, when I lift up the axle you two shove heron.

(DOROTHY crosses to THEM as HICKORYtakes hold of the edge of the wagonand lifts. ZEKE ignores HICKORY'saction and studies the wheel with a frown)

DOROTHYZeke, Hickory .. know what Miss Gultch did to Toto?

ZEKEI swear they made this new wheel smaller than the other three.

DOROTHYShe tried to kill him.

HICKORYBigger or smaller, get it on here 'fore my arms are pulledclear out their sockets. I ain't a statue, you know. I ain'tmade of iron.

ZEKEOkay, okay.

(HUNK takes the axle as ZEKE lifts thewheel into place)

DOROTHYWhy won't anyone listen-don't you care about Toto?

(Suddenly HUNK spins away flapping HIS handvigourously)

HUNKOw! You got my finger!

(ZEKE & HICKORY chuckle while HUNK moves awaysucking HIS finger. DOROTHY, clutching TOTO,crosses to HUNK. HICKORY and ZEKE get thewheel in place and hammer on the fixing ring)

DOROTHYWhat am I going to do about Miss Gultch, Hunk? Just becauseToto chases·her old cat.

HUNKNow lookit, Dorothy, you ain't using your head about MissGultch. Ain't you got no brains?

DOROTHYSure I have brains!

HtJNI{Well, why don't you use them? When you come home, don't go byMiss Gultch's place - then Toto won't get in her garden and youwon't get in no trouble. See?

(UNCLE HENRY re-enters with the empty boxwhich HE leans against the side of theincubator)

HUNKWill do, Mr. Gale.

(HUNK turns back to the wagon where HE joinsHICKORY already starting to empty it.ZEKE crosses to DOROTHY wiping the axlegrease from HIS hands)

DOROTHYZeke, what am I going to do?

ZEKEWell for a start, Kid, don't let that old Gultch heifer try andbuffalo you. She ain't nothing to be afraid of. You got tostand up to her, that's all, with a little courage, a littlegrit.

(Behind DOROTHY, HICKORY has uneartheda large metal funnel and HUNK holds theruined scarecrow. The scarecrow head isa small stuffed canvas bag painted witha face wearing a garish smile. A smallcross-piece supports the rags of anancient garment)

DOROTHYI'm not afraid of her.

ZEKEThat's what I wanted to hear. Walk with your head up, yourchest out and the next time she squawks, you just stroll rightup to her and spit in her eye. That's what I'd do.

t

DOROTHYWould you really?

~Unseen behind DOROTHY & ZEKE, HUNKand HICKORY approach on tip-toe)

ZEKESure I WOUld. Through this life you gotta walk tall, shootstraight and then you got no reason to be scared of nothing andnobody.

(HICKORY roars through the metal funnelon one side of ZEKE's head while HUNKsuddenly brandishes the face of thescarecrow at eye level on the other. With a scream of terror, ZEKE leapsaway, clutching HIS heart)

DOROTHY(To HICKORY & HUNK)

How can you be so cruel.

HICKORYIt's just a rib, Dorothy.

DOROTHYCan't you see how white he is? You really scared him.

ZEKEWho was scared?

HUNKYou was scared. If you was a jack rabbid, you'd be in the nextcounty by now.

(Just as it looks as if a quarrel isabout to break out, AUNT EM enterswith a plate of cookies)

AUNT EMHere, here, what's all this jabber-wapping when there's work tobe done? I know three shiftless farm hands that'll be out of ajob before they know it!

HICKORYWell, we was just having a li~tle fun, Mrs. Gale.

AUNT EMA farm's no place for fun. You want fun, go join a circus.

THE RAINBOW

DOROTHY crosses to the farm rake bythe picket fence and gazes intothe distance.

DOROTHYI wonder if there is such a place, Toto? There must be.

(DOROTHY places TOTO on theseat of the rake. Introductionmusic for the next number starts)

Not a place you can get to by a boat or a train. It's far, faraway - behind the moon - beyond the rain --

(SHE sings)

/47 "OVER THE RAINBOW"

DOROTHYWHEN ALL THE WORLD IS A HOPELESS JUMBLE,AND THE RAINDROPS TUMBLE ALL AROUND,HEAVEN OPENS A MAGIC LANE.

WHEN ALL THE CLOUDS DARKEN UP THE SKYWAY,THERE'S A RAINBOW HIGHWAY TO BE FOUND.LEADING FROM YOUR WINDOW PANE,

TO A PLACE BEHIND THE SUN,JUST A STEP BEYOND THE RAIN.

SOMEWHERE, OVER THE RAINBOW, WHY UP HIGH,THERE'S A LAND THAT I HEARD OF ONCE IN A LULLABY.SOMEWHERE, OVER THE RAINBOW, SKIES ARE BLUEAND THE DREAMS THAT YOU DARE TO DREAM REALLY DO COME TRUE.

SOMEDAY, I'LL WISH UPON A STAR AND WAKE UP WHERETHE CLOUDS ARE FAR BEHIND ME.WHERE TROUBLES MELT LIKE LEMON DROPS,AWAY ABOVE THE CHIMNEY TOPS,THAT'S WHERE YOU'LL FIND ME.

SOMEWHERE, OVER THE RAINBOW, BLUEBIRDS FLY,BIRDS FLY OVER THE RAINBOWWHY THEN - OH, WHY CAN'T 17 ....IF HAPPY LITTLE BLUEBIRDS FLY BEYOND THE RAINBOWWHY, OH, WHY CAN'T 17

I'm afraid I have no appetite Mrs. Gale. Indeed I~m so shakenby the ferocious attack of your niece's vicious dog, I maynever eat again.

UNCLE HENRYIf you don't eat, you'll waste away. And I'd hate to see youdwindle.

(MISS GULTCH gives HIM a beady lookwhile AUNT EM calls off)

AUNT EMDorothy could you bring Toto out here a minute?

(SHE turns back to MISS GULTCH)I'm sure if Dorothy's upset you in any way she'll be only tooglad to apologize as best she can.

MISS GULTCHIt's gone beyond apologies, Mrs. Gale. I have laid an officialcomplaint with the County Sheriff.

UNCLE HENRYWas he sober?

(MISS GULTCH gives UNCLE HENRYanother look as DOROTHY enterscarrying TOTO)

AUNT EMDorothy, Miss Gultch here seems very upset.

MISS GULTCHThat dog's a menace to the community.

DOROTHYThat's not true.

MISS GULTCHAs an act of public service, young woman, I'm taking that dogto the Sheriff and make sure he's destroyed.

Destroyed?Auntie Em!

DOROTHYToto? Oh, you can't! You mustn't!You won't let her will you?

DOROTHYOh, please, Aunt Ern! Toto didn't mean to. He didn't know hewas doing anything wrong. I'm the one that ought to bepunished. You can send me to bed without supper --

AUNT EMYou hear how sorry the child is. Surely if she promises togive your place a wide berth ...

MISS GULTCHIf you don't hand the dog over now, I'll bring a damage suitthat'll take your whole farm! There's a law protecting folksagainst dogs that bite!

AUNT EMHow would it be if she keeps him tied up? He's really gentle-- with gentle folk that is.

MISS GULTCHWell, that's for the Sheriff to decide.

(SHE produces a document whichSHE hands to UNCLE HENRY)

Here's his order allowing me to take him. Unless you want togo against the law.

(UNCLE HENRY studies the document)

UNCLE HENRYUh - yes --

AUNT EMWhat's it say, Henry?

UNCLE HENRYJust what she says. You gotta hand him over, Dorothy.

DOROTHYNo! I won't let you take him.

(ZEKE, attracted by DOROTHY's cries, enters carrying the hog pail)

(HE studies a photograph in asilver frame)

Yes, that's ... that's all right.(HE replaces the photograph inthe basket)

Now you can open them(SHE does so)

We'll gaze into the crystal. Ah, what's this I see? Ahouse ...with a picket fence.

DOROTHYThat's our farm!

DOROTHYWhy would anyone do that?

PROFESSORI don't know but it's ... it's someone she loves very much:someone she's been very kind to: someone she's taken care ofin sickness.

DOROTHYI had the measles once ... and she stayed right by me everyminute.

PROFESSORUh-huh.

DOROTHYBut that was when I was very small. She doesn't care about meat all now. And I don't care about her.

PROFESSOROh well that's ... that's not what the crystal says.

DOROTHYThey were going to kill Toto and she did nothing to stop them.

PROFESSORI don't see any of that in the crystal. All I see is a womanwho does the best she can and misses you something terrible.

DOROTHYWhat's she doing now?

PROFESSORYes, she's •..what's this? Why, she's ... she's putting her handon her heart! She's ... she's dropping down on the bed!

DOROTHYNo! What's wrong with her?

PROFESSORThat I can't say. The crystal's gone dark.

DOROTHYOh, you .... you don't suppose she could really be sick, do you?

TINMANWell, when I was flesh and blood like you, I fell in love witha Munchkin maiden whose mother hated me. So to stop me frommarrying her daughter she hired the Wicked Witch of the Westto put an evil spell on my axe. When I tried to chop down atree it chopped off my leg instead .

. SCARECROWIt chopped your leg off?

DOROTHYThat's terrible.

TINMANBut by good fortune I knew of a wonderful tinsmith and he mademe a new leg almost as good as the old one. So back I went towork and you knew what happened?

TINMANI told you. The axe was enchanted.

SCARECROWOf course. See Dorothy, if I had a brain I coulda worked thatout for myself.

TINMANI sometimes wish I hadn't got a new pair of arms from thetinsmith 'cause the last time I swung the axe was the worsttime of all.

SCARECROWI don't want to hear this.

(HE covers HIS ears)

DOROTHYWhat happened?

TINMANI split myself right down the middle.

THE LION - WILD FOREST

The lighting is dim, there is asense of thick vegetation. Theroar of lions and the screams ofmonkeys and tropical birds fillthe air. Clumps of tropicalvegetation set at regular intervalsacross the stage conceal threesmall trampolines for the LION'Sentrance. DOROTHY and the OTHERSenter tentatively.

/22/ LIONS, TIGERS & BEARS

DOROTHYI don't like this forest! It's - it's dark and creepy

SCARECROWOf course, I'm not very bright, but I think it'll get darker --before it gets lighter.

DOROTHYDo - do you suppose we'll meet any wild animals?

LIONWhat did you do that for? I didn't bite him.

DOROTHYNo, but you tried to. It's bad enough picking on a straw man,but when you go around picking on poor little dogs ...

LIONWell, you didn't have to go and hit me, did you? Is my nosebleedin'?

DOROTHYWell, of course not. My goodness, what a fuss you're making!Naturally when you go around picking on things weaker than youare --- why you're nothing but a great big coward!

LIONYou're right, I am a coward! I haven't got any courage atall. I even scare myself. Look at the circles under my eyes.I haven't slept in weeks.

TINMANWhy don't you try counting sheep?

LIONThat doesn't do any good - I'm afraid of 'em.

Oh, that's too bad.him, too?

SCARECROWDon't you think the Wizard could help

DOROTHYI don't see why not. Why don't you come along with us? We'reon our way to see the Wizard now. To get him a heart.

TINMANAnd him a brain.

DOROTHYI'm sure he could give you some courage.

LIONWell, wouldn't you feel degraded to be seen in the company ofa cowardly lion? I would.

DOROTHYNo, of course not!

LIONGee, that - that's awfully nice of you. My life has beensimply unbearable. Even my family's disowned me. When I wasjust a little cub, my father took me to the top of a highmountain and waved his paw around and said "One day son, allthis will be yours." Oh, I was terrified.

POPPIES

As DOROTHY, SCARECROW, TINMAN andLION dance off a great whitecloth descends. THEY reappear asgiant figures silhouetted againstthe cloth. THEY dance away fromthe light source and so seem togrow smaller and smaller. WhenTHEY are close behind the cloth,a projection of the WICKED WITCHlooms above them, music segues, looking down at THEIR littledancing figures.

/24/ POPPIES

(Orchestra, Chorus, GLINDA,DOROTHY, SCARECROW, TINMAN,and LION)

(Music continues under dialogue)

WEST WITCHThere is nothing so depressing as boundless optimism. Happily,it is totally misplaced. Now, shall I squash them out likethe interfering bugs they are, or shall I be witty andcreative? The bug alternative is attractive but messy. Sowitty and creative wins the day. A-hah! Something withpoision in it, I think. With poison in it, but attractive tothe eye - and soothing to the smell! Poppies! Poppies!Poppies!

(The screen begins to fill withhuge red poppies and soothing

. siren music is heard)

WEST WITCHThis lethal lullaby will put them to sleep forever. And thenthe Ruby Slippers will be ...

(SHE suddenly leans forwardso HER mouth and eyes fill thewhole screen. SHE screams the lastword)

.•. MINE! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

SCARECROWHere, give us your hands and we'll pull you along.

DOROTHYOh, no, please. I have to rest for just a minute.

(SHE puts TOTO down beside HER)You lie there, Toto. We can have a little sleep together.

SCARECROWOh, you can't rest now. We've got to go on.

(DOROTHY curls up for sleep)

LIONCorne to think of it, forty winks wouldn't be a bad idea.
