Looking for the Unexpected I am sure that you have heard conversations between people complaining that there is no such thing as an accident anymore. If someone is hurt, there must be someone to blame. If there is a risk, you need to add even more detail to that risk assessment. The world is becoming very predictable. In fact we love predictability. We love hearing what we want to hear and people acting the way we would like them to behave. Insurance companies thrive on this modern trend, yet schools often fall victim to what is now called the “Audit Culture,” with a tendency for schools to overemphasize the importance of NAPLAN tests and formal assessment tasks, often stifling student’s will to be creative and be unpredictable. The sad irony is that workplaces all around the world are crying out for education systems to produce students who are not just good at passing tests but are also creative thinkers. It is becoming increasingly clear that to be successful in the 21st century, students need to pursue the unexpected and schools need to reward that pursuit. JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE GRAND FINAL – A BATTLE TO REMEMBER!

Congratulations to the junior rugby league team who played

great football in their PSSA grand final against Kellyville. It was

a very close contest and with 2 minutes left, the score was 6-12.

Sadly, Kellyville scored an intercept try to win the game 6-18.

The game was a rough and tough encounter with Winston Hills

showing great skill and sportsmanship throughout the game –

well done, boys!

A huge thank you to the parents and grandparents for their

support this year. It was a very successful season of football and

the boys performed brilliantly in every game.

Can’t wait to do it all again next year!

P & C FATHER’S DAY STALL

Thursday 29th August Prices for goods for sale range from $1 to $5

Students are asked to bring a plastic bag for their gifts.

FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST

Friday, 30th August

8.00 am – 8.50am

FROM THE DEPUTY Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) News

You may have noticed the new signs we have displayed throughout the school. These signs reinforce our school rules and are an important visual reminder to reinforce expected behaviour in the playground. As part of this focus, we have also erected new fencing near the taxi bay to ensure students and parents are being safe by walking around the footpath. Please ensure that you use the footpath if you enter and exit the school via the taxi bay. New Focus Area – Walk on Hard Surfaces

Our school mascot – ‘Winnie’ made a special guest appearance last week to launch our new playground focus for the next 2 weeks – ‘We walk on hard surfaces’. Students will be rewarded with Winnie awards when following this rule, as well as for being safe, respectful and responsible in the playground and classroom. Father’s Day Celebrations

This Thursday morning the P & C will be hosting our annual Father’s Day stall in the old hall. Gifts range in price from $1 - $5. Students are asked to bring a plastic bag for their gifts. Also, the Father’s Day breakfast starts at 8am this Friday. Please make sure you have returned the note and $6 (per family) to your child’s teacher. Term 3 Parent Morning Tea

A big thank you to all the parents who attended our first parent morning tea last Wednesday. It was fantastic to speak with so many parents about the current and future direction of our school in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We will be announcing details for the Term 4 parent morning tea in the next newsletter. New Outdoor Learning Area

Since work began on this project in Term 2, I have been inundated with donations of plants, soil and mulch from many parents. We have now started to lay mulch and will soon be building a new footpath and installing benches in the garden. Our community launch will take place early in Term 4. A huge thank you to all those who have generously donated to this project – your support is greatly appreciated. David MacSporran Relieving Deputy Principal

SCHOOL NEWS NEW OUTDOOR LEARNING AREA – A MASTERPIECE IN PROGRESS!

The recess gardening group has cleared some unused space for our first outdoor learning area. The students have been working very hard for the last 10 weeks with shovels, rakes, pruning shears and saws to clear approx. 50 square metres of overgrown garden outside the support unit. Our goal is to use this space for an outdoor learning area which would be available for all classes. In order to complete this project, we are asking parents if they are able to donate the following:

Mulch Timber to be used for steps in a footpath Seasol or Thrive for our plants and soil Newspaper

A huge thank you to Kerry Seymour, Elizabeth Davis, Brad Scott and Donna Alexandrou who has already donated plants and potting mix for this area – your generosity is much appreciated. Once completed, we will be having a competition to name the garden as part of a launch to the community. If you are able to help in any way, please email me at [email protected] David MacSporran
