Kindergarten Orientation
I would like to thank Mrs Pollard, Mrs Storath and the
Kindergarten teachers for the planning behind our upcoming
Kindergarten Orientation. We are currently planning to have
2021 Kindergarten students attend for a session during the
week beginning the 23rd of November. This session will be for
90 minutes and will be in small groups of approximately 10.
Details of the session time has been sent out and we ask
parents to RSVP on the link provided.
A detailed video about the transition to Kindergarten has been
added to our school’s website and Facebook page. This
covers much of the information that is presented to parents at
our traditional Parent Information Night. I would like to thank
Mrs Pollard for putting it together and also Matilda and Henry,
our school captains, for their introduction.
Big Thank You- Uniform Shop
I would like to give a big thank you to our Uniform Shop
Committee who have been working extremely hard to put into
place processes to support our school community, especially
the new Kindergartens starting next year. The committee
gives up their time to provide this service and it is very much
appreciated. A special mention to Mrs Ryan, Mrs Gold and
Mrs Schuster for all of their great organisation.
Invoices
The amazing office staff have been working on invoices for
Term 1 of next year. They have taken into consideration the
credit for payments made for events that did not happen this
year due to COVID. Please do not hesitate to contact the
office if you have any questions.
Class Planning For 2021
If you are intending to leave the school this year, could you
please notify the office on 9639 8518, as soon as possible
(excluding Year 6 of course). Accurate numbers are important
for our class planning and staffing for 2021.
If you have any concerns or things that you think need to be
considered for your child’s placement for next year, please
email me on [email protected]
Swimming Carnival 2021- Years 3-6
We currently in the process of organising the details for next
year’s swimming carnival. Notes will be sent home shortly,
however, the school will need to follow the Department’s

FROM THE DEPUTY
NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and
achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and
Islanders Day Observance Committee’, the committee
responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC
Week. Its acronym has now become the name of the week.
NAIDOC is not just a celebration for Indigenous communities
but for all Australians.
NAIDOC Week 2020 celebrations will be held from the 8-15
November, celebrating the theme Always Was, Always Will
Be- recognising that First Nations people have occupied and
cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.
At Winston Hills Public School, we will be celebrating
NAIDOC week on Thursday 12 November. Students are
encouraged to wear red, yellow and/or black clothes to show
respect and support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander community. Also on this day, students will participate
in a Koomurri online workshop about Australian Didgeridoo
History. This online workshop will give students an insight and
perspective of Aboriginal culture. We do acknowledge that
Koomurri may have different traditions and customs of the
Darug people in which Winston Hills Public School is on.

ACTIVITY: REFLECTING ON THE WEEK
Getting our children to think about the week they have just had
is a helpful way for them to be more mindful of what’s going on
around them. It’s also good for them to see what happened
that made them happy and how they responded to challenges.
You could keep a weekly journal to see how your children
grow and mature over time.
Here’s an example you might like to follow:
Date: ____________________________________________
The best thing that happened this week was:
__________________________________________________
__________________________________________________
__________________________________________________
__________________________________________________
Something that challenged me this week was:

__________________________________________________
__________________________________________________
__________________________________________________
How did I respond to this challenge?
__________________________________________________

Something I didn’t like about this week was:

Was is something I could control? (circle) YES NO
FROM THE CHAPLAIN
What happens when you
say NO!
One of the hardest parts of parenting for me is having to
answer all my children’s questions and then listen to them
get angry and frustrated with me when I say no. I find it
exhausting having to explain why, and justify my answer.
“Can I have ice cream?” Can I play on screens?” Can Billy
have a sleepover? Arghhh! So when I came across this
article in Big Life Journal, I thought I would share it and give
it a go myself.
Very often our children challenge the rules and boundaries
that we put in place. And when we say no, that’s when
conflicts and arguments arise. So what do we do in these
situations? I’ll tell you what we usually do. We explain. “You
can’t watch so much TV, it’s not good for you.” We explain
WHY we have these rules and limitations in place. We
explain WHY they can’t have more screen time, WHY they
can’t own a mobile phone, WHY they can’t have another
cookie. We explain and explain… and they seem to not care
and the conflict doesn’t go away. And here’s why.
As we go about explaining, we actually forget the most
important thing… which is NOT to get them to understand
your logical reasoning. The most important thing is to help
them process their emotions and feelings and to show them
that you understand their feelings. Here’s what you can say:
“I know this is so hard. You really want to keep watching the
show. It’s so hard to hear NO when you really want me to
say YES. I get it. I really do.” Sometimes that’s all you need
to say. You can offer a hug, you can let them cry and
express their strong feelings. They need to know that all
feelings are OK. They’re welcome to show how they feel
about the rules and boundaries. And you, as their sturdy
leader, is there to listen, understand, and hold your ground.
Good luck!
Take care

BAND NEWS
Hello all, the term four invoices have now been issued and I
want to say a big thanks to Donna. All the changes this year
have made Donna’s job extra difficult and I can’t thank her
enough.
Performance band will be doing a virtual Performance next
Thursday morning. We will treat the rehearsal as an actual
performance and this will be available to view via Facebook
Live. The video will then be saved to the band Facebook
