There is a reason for all those bumper stickers that say “Start Seeing Motorcycles.” Far too many motorists do not do enough to recognize motorcycle riders, or share the road with them. That is one of the reasons I have a sticker in my rear window, to remind other motorist to watch for us, who do ride.

The result is that many motorcycle accidents are caused by the negligence of motorist. When a motorcycle is in a collision with another vehicle, it’s most often the other vehicle that has infringed on the right of way to which the motorcycle was legally entitled.

So, what can be done to educate motorist so that they do a better job of seeing motorcycles? After all, better seeing will only come with better thinking about what to expect on the road. It’s a matter of training, more that eyesight.

In the digital age seeing motorcycles more effectively means avoiding distracted driving. Cellphones and other electronic devices have created increasing temptations for drivers. This can include on-board navigation systems that are built right into the car, or truck.

Motorist who engage in distracted driving will have a hard time seeing all types of traffic. And that certainly includes

motorcycles. Indeed, it even includes motorcycles whose riders are trying to be as conspicuous as possible, such as wearing brightly colored clothing, extra lights, and riding in the zone.

It is also very important, however that Driver Education and training programs do a better job at emphasizing the need to be aware of motorcycles, and share the road with them. These efforts should not be restricted to driver training for teenagers either. Similar efforts should be made in mature driver programs for seniors, as well as remedial driver programs.

I am working with the 911 Driver Training School, by giving them as much documentation as I can, and will be participating in their functions. I hope others in our Chapter will do the same by displaying their bikes, and talking to the people, who are at these functions. This will share them we are just like them. Just someone who wants to enjoy the road.

CHAPTER ‘N’ MEMBERSHIP

Notes from your MEC...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year It’s time to make a list and check it twice, oh I know that’s supposed to be Santa’s list

but sometimes we help him out. While your checking the list may I suggest you also check your GWRRA dues, are they due? Maybe overdue?? When it’s time to pay the dues be sure to check the RESCUE PLUS Package. Some of you have added to your RV’s so it’s a good time to make sure all your RV’s are listed on your Rescue Plus Package. While checking your dues you can change any of your personal information: home address, phone, office you hold with the chapter. You can add or subtract at this time. It’s always good to be up to date. Thank you for paying attention to these little things.

Also, let me remind you if any of you had friends who rode with the Wing Nuts this past year, you should invite them to join! In fact, maybe you can sign them up and put a note in their Christmas card, WELCOME to CHAPTER N !! I bet they would be surprised and happy. That is a great gift.

Carl and I just returned from Oregon and Thanksgiving with my three girls and their families. What a wonderful time we had, it’s hard to come home and put our heads back in the game. We’re making our Christmas list and feeling blessed for family and friends.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All

Respectfully, Kaye Maier, MEC

WELCOME TO THE MOTORIST AWARENESS

PROGRAM!

BUT, I DIDN’T SEE HIM!

Last month I was out in the elementary school parking lot assisting a teacher in the process of changing a flat tire. Fortunately I had my mini compressor with me and as soon as we were finished inflating the tire I heard a loud bang, and then the noise of a car horn continuously blaring away. I rushed out to the street and saw the results of a two car collision. One of the cars had the airbag activated and the driver in a dazed condition. I rushed over to join some other people at the scene to see if I could assist in any medical way. The driver of the vehicle with the inflated airbag was being assisted by other individuals, so I went to the

driver who had evidently made a left turn in front of the other driver. This gentleman was walking around in a high state of agitation and continually repeating that he wondered where the other driver had come from since he did not see him. Yes, emergency aid and police showed up in a matter of minutes. The point I’m making is that if the driver had not seen a vehicle the size of a car and made a left hand turn in front of it, how can an individual on a smaller sized motorcycle be recognized? Was the driver so engrossed on the entrance to the parking area that his vision of the approaching vehicles was totally ignored? Did another case of “distracted driving” enter the books? Only that driver will know. But, the statement of “I didn’t see him” boggles my mind since the size of the on-coming vehicle is hard to ignore.

Ramblings From Your Editor

Chuck Grimm “Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge.”

Well, it’s official. I’ve put the bike up for the winter. Suspended all my insurance on it with the exception of the Comprehensive coverage. I’m already dealing with PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome)!!

So, now it is time to start my project list for the winter. And the list is rather long and ambitious to say the least. I met up with a wonderful friend on Facebook who made me a deal on a luggage rack, vanity mirror, trunk light, a rear front fender and he threw in two gel butt cushions for grins. Thank you Phil. So, I have those items to install, going to connect my CB radio and clean up my wiring. I’m also going to change the spark plugs, replace the brake fluid on the front brakes and I’m hopeful to get the coolant changed as well. Probably the most difficult task that is on my agenda is to replace the spring on the OEM shock, install a braided hose to the shock and also clean out the pump for the shock and refill.

Thanks to Dan, I have videos to help me through it. The one thing that is not discussed, is bleeding the hose from the reservoir to the shock. From everything I can tell, I’ll have to remove the fuel tank as well. It is also my plan to replace the spring on the Aux shock that was installed when the trike kit was installed so long ago. To this day, I can’t understand why they just didn’t use the heavier spring. Oh yes, there is one more thing that I will need to do. One of our members, Mr. Lee Hobbs, was kind enough to redesign my trailer hitch and convert it to a receiver style. He’s a certified Nuclear

Navy Welder and man, did he do a wonderful job. The new hitch will keep whatever trailer I’m towing a lot more secure. Here’s a picture of the final product. Thank you Lee for a job well done...

So, I’m hoping to get all this done and have the bike ready for the new riding season. The one thing that I’m not looking forward to is removing the fuel tank. Although it only has 3 gallons of fuel in it, it would be better if it were empty. So, am actively looking for a safe way to remove the fuel and store it in a gas container. At the same time, I’ll be putting some Stabil in it to keep the fuel in good shape.

At this time, Lesley & I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May the new year bring a better world to all of us.

Rider Safety Thoughts By Lee Hobbs

Always be aware of your space. everything around you.

When riding in a group always ride staggered formation.

Keep safe distance from rider in front of you. I like the 2

second rule between each bike.

Keep track of bikes behind you .

Always use hand signals when needed, IE pot holes ,road

kill, rubber parts, ECT.

On long rides always have liquids handy. even some

snacks.

Remember if you can’t see the mirrors on a vehicle in front

of u they can't see you.

Always be ever cautious on windy roads you never know

when there might be loose gravel on road way.

Be safe and always keep the rubber down and shiny side

up.
