GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”
Hello Members, Have you stayed cool this July? Hope so! For those riding, please stay hydrated and stop often.
Our picnic is Saturday, August 5th at Hagan Stone Park, Area “C” (where we were last year). Hope everyone plans to attend.
We will have a ride August 12th to T-2’s (Albemarle) School Tools Ride. We will meet at Holden’s Crossing at 8:15 a.m., kickstands up at 8:30 a.m. As you know this is the only time we have to visit T-2 since our Gatherings are the same day and time. Hats off to Chapter A. Our members have sold all but 50 of the Raffle tickets. Hope you have registered for Wings Over the Smokies and made your hotel reservations. We are sure you have questions about the GWRRA changes that will take effect January 1, 2018. If so , please direct your questions to Libby Jennings, our Central Assistant District Director ([email protected]) . The questions will be compiled and sent to Roy & Cindy Bryant, District Directors, for answers or on to National.
Be Safe in your travels. We Care, Alice & Ron Myers Chapter Directors, NC-A

The weathermen on Channel 2 have been telling us July is the hottest month of the year. I certainly want to hold them to it! Tired of that really high temperature, high humidity, high heat index! I’m heading for Maggie Valley the 28th and 29th of July, should be a bit cooler there. We’ve covered most of what we need to do in hot weather to help us cope with it, stay hydrated, take
frequent breaks, stay covered up to prevent dehydration and protect us from the sun (and road rash), avoid being out in the hottest part of the day – but we haven’t covered running away to cooler climes. I think I need to research that! While we’re on that subject, the coolant for our water-cooled engines doesn’t last forever, it gets tired, and should be changed on a regular basis. It has a tough job, keeping the engine cooled in these high temperatures, but also keeping the liquid from freezing and damaging our engines in cold weather. Through the years, we found that automobile coolant (antifreeze) did not work well in Gold Wing engines – maybe car engines are catching up with us, but do be sure to use coolant (antifreeze) specified by your Owner’s Manual (remember, ask your MOM). LEMMINGS In a Baseline of Health (of all things) article, they brought up a recent study which was done at Arizona State University in Tempe. This study found that following behind a friend’s car increases the chances that you will practice unsafe driving maneuvers that can potentially put you and your passengers in harm’s way.(https://jonbarron.org/childrens-health/following-your-friends-can-kill-you - footnote1_xf2w4yi) These results were based on a driving simulation test that was used to assess subjects’ driving under a variety of conditions. Using a driving simulator with a 300-degree wraparound screen display, the volunteers were given instructions to do their simulated driving in a city, and the researchers used this to develop a baseline evaluation of each person’s typical driving behaviors. The next simulation task they were given involved using a navigation system to find their way to a specific des-tination. Finally, in the third variation on the simulation system, the participants were told to follow a friend in a car in front of them. All of the data from the three versions of the simulation were then compiled and analyzed. The investigators compared each subject’s behaviors behind the wheel in each different scenario. Among the areas considered were their driving speed, the amount of distance they maintained from the car ahead of them, the timing of their lane changes, and their reaction to various hazards that came up during the simulation tests. What the researchers discovered was that in the situation of following a friend in a car, the drivers began to accelerate in speed, drive more erratically, shorten their distance to the car in front of them, and make much faster lane changes versus their driving habits simply going through a city or using a navigation system to arrive at a destination. Even worse, when hazardous situations came up on the simulation during the task of following a lead car, the participants were more likely to swerve in front of pedestrians crossing the street and speed up to make traffic lights that were turning red. This study was very small and did have some limitations, but it has a familiar feeling for most of us, remembering times when you were following a friend and getting nervous if a car pulled in between you or you were losing sight of them. Es-pecially with the ubiquity of navigation systems these days, there is almost never a need to follow another vehicle. No need to be a Lemming! For us, using our group riding guidelines and having trained riders, most of whom are equipped with CB radios for communication, we have little chance of getting lost and separated from the group. Riding without communications and procedures would be challenging, but there are ways to work with such limitations. Every rider should know the destination and have a general idea of how to get there; also, any planned breaks should be common knowledge, where, address if possible, time if possible. Set up riding procedures (staggered formation, passing procedure, stops, turns, gas and rest breaks, group separation (missed turn, not making it through traffic lights and stop signs as a group, etc.), to help any group you’re riding with to ride better, more organized, and safer. We have always encouraged our riders to “ride your own ride”, ride within your limits, and if you feel you cannot ride safe-ly with your group, arrange to meet them at the destination, or split off and go elsewhere (your choice). A very important point – IF YOU ARE GOING TO SPLIT OFF AND RIDE SEPARATELY, LET THE GROUP KNOW – ARE YOU MEETING THEM AT THE DESTINATION – OR ARE YOU LEAVING TO HEAD HOME OR ELSEWHERE. When you’re in a group riding situation and you split off, participants worry about you – are you having mechanical trouble, did you possibly have an accident and get hurt? In a good group, one or more of them will turn around and come back looking for you to be sure you’re safe. Of course, not having a CB, I turned back for a couple who had let the group know by CB that they were taking a potty break – oh, well – I needed a “rest” stop also. We make safety a priority and truly we are friends for fun, safety and knowledge! Paula Hines, NC-A Chapter Educator Ps – What’s coming up? Wing Ding! What else? Wings Over the Smokies! We got fun riding!

During the month of July, lots of fun was had visiting with not only Central Region Chapter Gatherings, but with some in the West, as well as the East. Traveling with our friend Henry, the three of us not
only attended the Gatherings, but found areas to sight see or searched out some interesting stores, and took the scenic/backroads – not being in a hurry! We even checked out the location where our District Rally will be, along with seeing our rooms at the motel where we will be staying.
Bill, Henry and Dave continue each week, attending Wednesday Breakfast/Rides with NC-W Chapter mem-bers; good food at different restaurants each week, with great rides afterwards and of course being with great friends of Eden’s Chapter.
Henry, Bill, Dave and Carl also enjoyed their 4 day trip to Dayton, Ohio to the Air Force Museum; a good time was had by each of these Chapter Broth-ers. Weather was great for them until their return home and it was a little wet!
We have continued to chase the Central Couple’s Plaque frequently, capturing 2 out of 4 times for July, for a total of 17 times for the year. We will be attending the annual Couple’s Retreat in Mebane on Saturday July 29th; getting to be with all the NC Couples and having fun. We are winding down our 2 year commitment as NC-A Couple, with just 5 months left – it has been fun chasing the plaque
and being with other couples.
Be safe in your travels and as always, hope we can see you at some of the other NC Chapter Gatherings, as well as our monthly Gathering on August 10th.

Central Travelers Plaque going to
NC-B2 Winston-Salem
Gathering Together JULY 2017
Our A gathering was opened by Chapter Director, Alice Myers, welcoming everyone. We stood for the pledge of allegiance to the American flag then had a moment of silence. Cheryl greeted guest chapters as follows: B2 Win-ston-Salem, H2 Durham, N Burlington, M Salisbury, District Staff and Don Hermann’s mother visiting from Florida. The Central Travelers Plaque was won by B2 Winston-Salem and will be given away at their August meeting (2nd Tuesday). The Couples Plaque was won by Lewis and Alyce Quinn of M Salisbury. The vest drawing winner was
Lisa Brown from B2 Winston-Salem.
ACD Tom FitzGerald gave an interesting talk about how to stay cool while “Riding in the Heat” by wearing a mesh jacket, using cooling vests and staying hydrated. (He was filling in for Paula Hines, Chapter Educator, while
she was taking care of details for the passing away of her brother-in-law.)
A’s Chapter Director, Alice, covered Sunshine Lady news recognizing July birthdays, anniversaries and GWRRA anniversaries. Milton & Judy Barton will be taking the canned goods collected for July to Pleasant Garden United
Methodist Church Food Pantry.
The prize tickets for WOS were won by Nancy Allen (51 tickets – hope her hand holds up filling out all those tickets!) A’s June Dinner Ride had 11 attendees and Nancy Allen won the money. Surprise car coaster door prize
was won by Milton Barton and the Murdoch Center basket was won by Christine Cline of B2 Winston-Salem.
50/50s were won by Cheryl Davis and Milton Goodpasture, both from A.

Bruce took Bill, David, Carl and Henry to the Air Force Museum in Dayton where we saw aircraft from the inception of flight through the present. We spent two days from 0830 when the gates opened till 1700 when they ran us out, and could have used another day. The ride up was wonder-ful but the return was rather wet with lightning
storms and no place to hide. Can we go back ?
