VANCE’S NEWS Dear parents and guardians, It is hard to believe that the summer is quickly coming to a close and the 2018-2019 school year is about to begin. The staff is busily preparing the building for another banner year, and, currently, we have 1048 students enrolled; what a blessing! A year ago, I was fortunate to attend the Holy Land Pilgrimage with a number of St. Ignatius talented and exciting teachers and staff. I did not know then that I would be joining this remarkable team. God had a plan for me that started over a year ago, and I am blessed to serve here. Over the last few months, I have been transitioning to St. Ignatius through meetings with Mr. Reilly and Mrs. Sieve, the School Committee, the staff, and with our new Pastor, Fr. Geoff. I have received nothing but warmth, care, guidance, and respect. Through these meetings, I have been able to begin to piece together a picture of how the school was run and the great things that happen here. I want to reaffirm that I am committed to the six Core Values that guide us in our decision making, instruction and religious formation. 1. Our relationship with God and the Catholic Faith provides a string foundation, instilling ethics, morals, and the love of Jesus Christ. 2. We are focused on the development of the whole child and their attainment of their God given gifts: spiritually, academically, physically, emotionally, morally, and socially. 3. We embrace all of God’s children and celebrate our diversity. We strive to always emulate and live up to the greatest commandment, “To love your neighbor as yourself.” 4. We model and practice stewardship as we care for our school, parish, community and world. We value using our time, talents, and treasure to achieve our goals and the building of the kingdom of God. 5. We are committed to continuous improvement in all areas. 6. We create and cultivate a community that is welcoming and respectful. We value the community and its ability to instill the ideals of volunteerism, practicing good citizenship, and demonstrating our love for Jesus Christ. The 2018-2019 school year theme is “We Are Many Parts”. St. Paul shared this imagery as he explained the value and importance of all parts who form the Body of Christ. In his letter to the Corinthians he states, “There is one body, but it has many parts and all its many parts make up one body. It is the same with Christ. We were all baptized by one Holy Spirit. And so we are formed into one body. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is honored, every part shares in its joy. You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it.” During this year, students and staff will take time to better understand what St. Paul was speaking about, but also practicing caring for all parts of the Body of Christ through kinds words and deeds. I ask for your prayers for all of our students, staff and families as we begin the school year. May this school year be a time of strengthening our skills, using our God given talents, respecting all people, and a time of dedicated and meaningful prayer to better the world we live. I look forward to meeting you and your children and celebrating their many accomplishments. In Christ’s Peace, Kevin Vance Principal

PARENTS of students new to St. Ignatius are asked to attend “St. Ignatius 101”, an introduction to your partnership with St. Ignatius. This meeting will be on Thursday, August 16 at 6:30pm in the cafeteria, and is an important step in preparing to get the most from your child’s St. Ignatius education. Regular office hours, 7:30am to 4:00pm, will resume on Monday, August 27. GOOGLE CLASSROOM

This school year teachers will be using GOOGLE CLASSROOM to communicate assignments and various events from their classroom. Edline will no longer be used for this purpose. In upcoming

weeks, we will be sending a request for you to accept a daily or weekly update from each class that your child is in and we need at least one parent/guardian to accept this invitation. Teachers will add more to this information on Teacher Introduction Nights in September. We highly encourage at least one parent to receive this information. NOTES FROM THE NURSE

Welcome back staff and families! I am excited to start another safe and healthy school year! Thank you for your continued cooperation and responsiveness with all health matters. Medication must be brought to school by a parent/guardian in its original container with original label intact. The form is available when logged on to saintischool.org, under For Parents, then School Nurse. SCHOOL NEWS WILDCATS ON THE MOVE

Wildcats on the Move is back again this year, and all students are encouraged to participate. We will be recording miles for this school year as well as lifetime miles. For those who are new to the school, the goal of our WOTM program is to promote physical fitness and to offer students another healthy option at recess by walking, running, or wheelchair rolling on our track. Each lap of the outer loop is about ½ mile. Recess volunteers and staff will keep track of the miles during school hours. Under adult supervision, students are also encouraged to log miles on their own. In order for laps to count outside of school hours, students need to submit a note or mile voucher stating their name, HR, grade, number of miles, and a parent/guardian’s signature. Miles may be logged on any formally measured track. Look for new members of the 10, 50, 100 and 250 Mile Clubs listed in The Wildcat Wire each week. Look upon these students. Let them enjoy their learning and take delight in new discoveries. Help them to persevere in their

studies and give them the desire to learn all things well.

Look upon these teachers. Let them strive to share their knowledge with

gentle patience and endeavor always to bring the truth to eager minds.

Grant that students and teachers alike may follow Jesus Christ, the way, the truth,

and the life, forever and ever. Amen.

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION As part of statewide protocol, we would like to advise you of our policies concerning parents in regards to Emergency/Safety Procedures. This is not to alarm you, but to let you know that we are prepared with a plan if the need arises. We also practice these plans without prior notice and need your cooperation. Your child’s safety is our TOP priority. The following steps are in place for these emergencies. CALAMITY DAYS You can check the St. I’s website where we will post any change from the calendar as the first item under NEWS. We will also activate our notification system as soon as possible. Please make sure the school office has ALL current addresses and phone numbers on file. We use our system to send a recorded message to home phone numbers.

If school is cancelled due to weather conditions, we follow Northwest’s plan. School will either be closed or we will operate on a two hour delay. We will activate our emergency contact system using contact information in Powerschool. This information may also be found on our website, TV, radio, or the TV station’s website. Listen or watch for Northwest Local Schools. In the media, you will NOT hear or see “St. Ignatius School” except in very rare circumstances. In the event that there needs to be an early dismissal, the oldest student enrolled in school will call a parent to determine how they will get home. We need to be sure arrangements have been made so no one arrives home unsupervised without the parent’s consent. Buses will run their routes as usual unless you are notified. TORNADO/SEVERE THUNDERSTORM If there is a Watch issued for our area, we will dismiss as usual. If there is a Tornado Warning, we will not release students until it is cleared. (We will locate to a designated safe area in the building and no one will be released.) If there is a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, we will use our best judgment to decide if the schedule needs to be interrupted. When possible, we will post emergency and safety action on our website. LOCKDOWN A lockdown is necessary if an internal or external threat is present. School is completely secured which means that no one will be allowed in or out, including parents. Signs will be posted on all outside doors, 911 will be called, and the Parish Office will be notified. If the lockdown lasts for more than 30 minutes, information will be posted on the saintischool.org website. HAZMAT/SHELTER-IN-PLACE In the unlikely event of a chemical, biological, nuclear, or explosive threat, HAZMAT/Shelter-in-Place action is taken. The school will be completely sealed from outside pollutants and we will be stocked with a supply of water and food. Signs will be posted on all outer doors and emergency personnel will be contacted. If necessary, we have established relationships with several other schools in the area where we may transport the students.
