PREFACE

“Now that we’re launching a choir, we want to build a decent one, carrying it over into

the future.”

In the year 1973, as we all know, this ardent hope of “Founding Fathers” for the future

“Chamber Choir” reached a conclusion - the Cathedral Period - through some ten years

Page 2: The Whole Performance Record - shitsunaiob.com · The Whole Performance Record since 1960 The Chamber Choir Allumni Association 2011 Version 4 Supervised by YAMASHITA Yutaka June

of arguments and selections. I don’t know whether it was decent or otherwise in the

eyes of the “Fathers”. In anyway, however, this is our history.

In the year 2012, the choir will be celebrating its 40th

anniversary of the start of the

regular concert in St. Mary’s Cathedral. Looking back on the advent of the baroque

boom after the war, and on our history of turning away from the “utagoe movement”

and of riding the upward wave of the “early music movement”, I’ll be introducing you

to every single piece of our concert programs.

Repertoire for half a century: 4 Categories

As is usual with university choirs, the early-time repertoire, much differently from our

later tradition, had been very wide-ranging, since the official founding in the year 1960.

It is classified into 4 categories :

Ⅰ.”Choral arrangement” of beloved melodies of all ages and countries irrespective of

their genre.[1960-1963]

Ⅱ.”Japanese authentic choral works” after the Second World War, by such composers

like Shibata Minao, Dan Ikuma, Kobayashi Hideo, and Yuyama Akira.[1960-1972]

Ⅲ.”Classicals” so-called of the 18th

, 19th

, and 20th

century composers of western art

music, such as Hiller, Haydn, Albrechtsberger, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms,

Bruckner, Rossini, Faure, Kuula, Hindemith, and Britten. The number of pieces

performed is rather small. But, even in the Cathedral Period, they still continues to be

sung, though not conspicuous.

Ⅳ.”Renaissance and Baroque” from Dunstable (c.1390-1453) to Bach (1685-1750), in

which there have been as many as 93 composers sung by us. We in fact boast as many

as 647 pieces performed. This category, in the field of sacred music in particular, has

long been composing, in reality and in name, the most important and centerpiece

repertoire of our Chamber Choir since 1969. And four years later, in the year 1973, we

chose to make the very hub of our concert activities of the “St. Mary’s Cathedral

Tokyo”, the rich reverberation in which we thought was very appropriate specifically to

our Early Music repertoire.

Periodization: 5 Periods

Our earlier history, which is to say “the first ten years,” is a history of categorical

selection, from a “hybrid” of ⅠⅡⅢⅣ to the “thoroughbred ” of “Ⅳ” alone. And we

tried dividing the whole history of 50 years into five different periods, according to the

number of the category above-mentioned, naming each period as follows :

There begins to appear a sign of transition under the second resident conductor. He

asks us to establish a historically ordered program. It’s true that the year 1963 still

leaves some influence of the preceding years, but it also produces innovation. The first

of which is without any doubt Johann Sebastian Bach. With his “Magnificat, D-dur,

BWV 243”, our choir steps into the second stage, the developing period.

The other important innovative point is the start of “Renaissance Missa” in the year

1966. “Papae Marcellis” by Palestrina leads us to build up a tradition of consecutive

Missa performance.

What is most important for chorus is practice. It comes in first, it comes in second. Too

much intellectualism isn’t desirable. But it is also recommended that student conductors,

section leaders who lead the chorus, or someone involved in selecting and programming

of concert pieces should also have the appropriate knowledge on theory, history or style

of each program component. In Autumn in 1963, focusing on the theme of “Baroque

Music Study”, we participated in an university festival, and did detailed and

enlightening booklet on the Baroque Music.

In this period, Renaissance and Baroque repertoire constitutes 95% of the total

number performed. Most importantly, above all, the choir starts to perform Renaissance

Motets, starting with Palestrina, Victoria and Byrd in 1968. And two years later, in 1970,

we try a german early baroque piece for the first time by Heinrich Schütz. He becomes

our second favorite composer next to Bach.

“An Evening of Renaissance Music”

Missa : in illo tempore(Palestrina)

[Regular Concert 10]Ⅳ/Sunday, December 14, 1969, Toshi-Center Hall, Tokyo

The year 1969 sees our first performance of Bach’s Cantata with some period

instrumentalists as guests. They really are the pioneering generation of what is called

the “Early Music”. At that time, we weren’t necessarily conscious of the general idea

of the “Early Music” or of the “period instrument”. Regardless of those concepts, we

simply were performing the cantata No.106 as it seemed we thought to be at the time of

Bach. It is much later in years that what we have done is incorporated into the stream of

the early music movements so-called.

As everyone knows, Renaissance sacred music was brought up in churches and

inside them. Their composition heavily relied on it. Looking for authentic performances,

we chose, in 1973, to use a full-scale acoustic space, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Tokyo.

Editor’s Postscript

So, this is “the Whole Performance Record” of our “Chamber Choir” from 1960.12. to 2011.6. For

half a century! It was very demanding and strenuous to give a full and accurate description of the

song titles performed for as long as five decades. It needed a good deal of time and effort. With the

appearance of Office 2000 and Windows Me, I started editing initially on a personal basis, holding a

slow pace. And then, it was later upgraded to the official project to mark the anniversary. And at the

moment, in an unprecedented violent heat, I’m writing this postscript using Office 2010 and

Windows 7. The reason for our using English is very simple. We are going to put this performance

record on our website. It will soon be globally retrieved. With this in mind, we decided through

discussions to use English as the international “de facto” lingua franca. For collecting the past

concert programs I’ve relied on seniors and juniors of our alumni reunion. After converting collected

materials into digital data, I was given much useful advice, specially in respect of technical problems

I have encountered, from my co-editor, Nikko Miyoji-san.(Y. Yamashita・Version 1, August, 2010)

Owing to the 2011 great earthquake (and also Tsunami and the Nuclear Disaster), which happened

one month after the Version 3, the editorial job for the next one was greatly delayed. But in the

meantime, I personally had the good fortune of making much progress in image editing, which is

greatly thanks to my senior Obata-san. And by courtesy of Mrs. Iizuka of the Photo Studio Iizuka, an

unexpected amount of pictorial data of our performances in the cathedral was provided. Which in

fact include twenty years of concert photos from 90’s to 00’s. For that reason, I was able, as can be

seen, to put many new photos among the flood of impersonal song titles.(Y. Yamashita・Version 4,

October, 2011)
