THE WHISKY SALE: A PRIVATE COLLECTION

AN EXCEPTIONAL COLLECTION OF WHISKY 50 YEARS IN THE MAKING

Comprising over 300 bottles, the collection was amassed by a businessman who wasfirst introduced to whisky when his father-in-law gave him a bottle of The Macallan10-Year-Old. It proved revelatory, sparking a life-long interest in whisky and a deeplove of Macallan. Indeed, The Macallan 10-Year-Old has been his drink of choiceever since. At the heart of the collection is Macallan, but the collector has also amassed bottlesfrom Scotland’s other finest distilleries including whisky from all six regions:Speyside; Highlands; Lowlands; Campbeltown; Islay and the Islands.The majority of the collection was bought in the UK, however, approximately 20%was sourced from Spain, Italy, France and Holland. The collector even travelled asfar as Barbados to collect a particularly prized bottle. Amongst interesting lotssourced overseas are four bottles of The Macallan Cadenheads, Scotland’s oldestindependent bottler which he purchased from Cadenheads Amsterdam shop; here healso found a rare bottle of The Macallan 12-Year-Old French Revolution 1789-1989.The following catalogue also offers good bottles from the 1970s and some now‘silent’ distilleries. In addition, there are plenty of affordable bottles of single malt fordrinking.

Twenties, Thirties, Forties and Fifties, distilled as re-creations of the styles ofMacallan for those decades, each 40% vol 500mlThe 1920s saw Macallan selling to Whisky Blenders as ‘top dressing’ for their blends,the rare remaining casks matured for longer giving a drier, less ‘toffee’ sweet taste.The 1930s saw coal in short supply due to increasing industrial activity meaningMacallan reverted to drying the barley with peat. At the same time, sherry casksbecame scarce due to the Spanish Civil War resulting in a peatier, less spicy whisky.The 1940s saw the onset of war which meant almost no casks were forthcoming fromSpain and refilling casks was common practice. This, combined with the peat dryingwhich was still occurring, meant the flavour remained less spicy and more peaty.The 1950s saw Spanish sherry casks become available again after the SecondWorld War. This sweetness, mixed with the hint of peat smoke, resulted in a rich andspicy Macallan as fine as we taste today.£700 - 1000
