  • ROH L IVE – LA BOHEME Wed 29 Jan, 7.45pm£16.50, £10 under 18s

Puccini’s opera of young love in 19th-century Paris is packed with beautiful music, including lyrical arias, celebratory choruses for Act II’s evocation of Christmas Eve in the Latin Quarter and a poignant final scene over which the composer himself wept.

Richard Jones’s production captures La bohème’s mixture of comedy, romance and tragedy and the cast features some of the greatest interpreters of Puccini’s bohemian lovers performing today.

ROH L IVE – THE CELL IST & DANCES AT A GATHERING

    Tue 25 Feb, 7.15pm£16.50, £10 under 18s

Cathy Marston has previously been an Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House and Director of Bern Ballett, and is much in demand internationally. The inspiration for her first work for The Royal Ballet Main Stage is the momentous life and career of the cellist Jacqueline du Pré.

Jerome Robbins’s elegant and elegiac classic forms the second part of the programme. This exercise in pure dance for five couples, set to music by Chopin, is a masterpiece of subtlety and invention.

    ROH LIVE – THE SLEEPING BEAUTYThu 16 Jan, 7.15pmSat 18 Jan, 2pm£16.50, £10 under 18s

This production of The Sleeping Beauty has been delighting audiences in Covent Garden since 1946. A classic of Russian ballet, it established The Royal Ballet both in its new home after World War II and as a world-class company.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score and Marius Petipa’s original choreography beautifully combine with sections created for The Royal Ballet by Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon. This ballet is sure to cast its spell over anyone who sees it.

    EASTER IN ART

    Tue 7 Apr, 7.30pm£12

Two opera classics are drawn together in this wonderfully observed re-creation of life in a south Italian village as a travelling theatre visits and emotions erupt. The award-winning production by Damiano Michieletto presents vividly the fast-moving events brought about by secret love and uncontrollable jealousy.

With thrilling singing and intense drama, ‘Cav and Pag’ distils into one wonderful night out, the enduring appeal of Italian opera in its most familiar form.

The story of Christ's death and resurrection has dominated western culture for the past 2000 years. It is perhaps the most significant historical event of all time, as recounted by the gospels but, equally, as depicted by the greatest artists in history.

Shot on location in Jerusalem, United States and throughout Europe, this beautifully crafted film explores the different ways artists have depicted the Easter story through the ages and thus depicts the history of us all.

Photographs don't do it for me; my work has always attempted to be antithetical to glossy mass media images of places or figures; the painted surfaces becoming gritty and textured.

These paintings reflect two years' response to a new environment since relocating from Yorkshire. Rapid observational drawings are developed from memory into work which shows my increasing interest in the geometry of viewpoints encountered moving round the landscape or figure.
