PASTOR’S PEN — MAY 2017

A little boy ran to his mother. “Mom!” You know that antique clock of ours that has been passed from one generation to another?”

“Yes,” the mother anxiously responded. “What’s wrong?”

“My generation just dropped it!”

Happy Mother’s Day to all the ladies.

Mother’s should strive to have the same characteristics as God. They spell our mother.

M—Merciful. God forgives and shows mercy when we do wrong. In the same way mothers show mercy to their children when they disobey.

O– Observant. God knows and sees all. Many times children think moms have eyes in the back of their heads because mom seems to see everything. When you are observant you are modeling another of God’s characteristics.

T—Trustworthy. God is never false; He can be trusted. He’s true to his word. When mothers faithfully keep their promises they are showing they are trustworthy.

H—Helpful. God is always there to help his children. Your willingness to give your children whatever help they need demonstrates that your helpful.

E –Encouraging. God gives us encouragement as we read the Scriptures. When mothers compliment their children and give them positive reinforcement it is like God’s encouragement to us.

R– Righteous. God is holy, upright, and good. As mothers live a godly life, they are an example to their children of how to live.

“Sometimes we’re so concerned about giving our children what we never had growing up, we neglect to give them what we did have growing up.” (James Dobson). I hope that all of us will make it a priority to pass our Christian Faith down to the next generation and to be an example of God’s Love and Care.

Building use for Northern Valley Youth Orchestra, April 30th they’ll hold auditions in our Sunday School rooms They have used this space successfully in the past. Nepalese Community April 29, 2017 – A regional meal of 5 or 6 regional congregations will be

held. Members of UMW will assist in the kitchen.

Get To Know You Event in the works for the future so the Wesley con-gregation and the Nepalese community can get to know each other. Will be scheduled in May.

MCCI Update – Beautification Team, Report by Colleen Asche This team is looking for some guidance where to stop and where another

team (or teams) pick up where they have left off. Items discussed: Children’s wall, historical wall

on one side, Boy Scout Tribute at the end of the hallway (all in the office hallway)

Fellowship Hall/North entrance: big space. Discussed to be a mission wall – use

pictures of Wesley in Action Banner for this space? Seasonal? Discussed the tables and chairs

currently there. Back of the chapel: looking for something dif-

ferent, namely the chairs Plan: Develop Teams, Cast a Vision, Plan in Action to complete various

projects Silent Auction: not a lot of interest within the congregation but through

the Grand Forks For Sale site items were sold for about $400-$500.

Trustees Report – Dewey Sandwick Video Doorbell – still in the works This video doorbell is for the North Door as well as the Office/Education

door. Endowment approved funding Waiting on RBB Electric to complete. Dewey will be out of town April 4-11 so someone may need to take the

lead on this project if work is done during this time. Finance Report – John Galegher Reporting

Received a nice thank you letter from the Salvation Army for our donation from offering at Christmas Eve Service

Wesley Center for Religion, an on-campus organization, disbanded last year. Wesley UMC received $10,000 dollars from them designated for outreach for college students & young adults

Treasury Report: March expenses up-to-date (with the exception of one remaining payroll).

Pledges are behind this at this point Overall, Wesley UMC has spent $1,300 more

New Welcome Center!

Thanks to the hard work of our Lobby Remodel team, the Wesley foundation and donations and gifts from our congregation, our new Welcome Center is closer than ever to being a reality! You may have noticed a new table located in the cor-ner of the lobby outside the Sanctuary. Watch for additional updates to include a monitor, information about our church for guests and much more!

You can help us as we develop our Welcome Team. When you see a guest or visitor, introduce yourself, and offer to bring them to the Welcome Center. Then we can visit with them, get their contact information and provide a welcome packet. It takes the whole church to make a real difference!

Thank you to Helen DeMaster for 10 years of

maintaining our front flower garden. We can thank her for the beauty her work has added to our church. As a smaller portion of

that note please add that Helen will be "retiring" as our primary gardener, and anyone able and interested in continuing this beautiful space

should contact the church office.

Branching Out: Connecting Through Christ

This is this year’s theme Dakotas United Methodist Camps.

The Dakotas Conference operates 3 camps — Wesley Acres in North

Dakota; Lake Poinsett and Storm Mountain in South Dakota. There are

camps for kids who have just completed Kindergarten and adults who

are simply young at heart, and everyone in between. The youngest

campers stay for one night at camp—the perfect first introduction into

the wonderful world of church camp. Camps for older students have

varied focuses, from basketball to the arts, to outdoor adventures. There

are also family camps available. Wesley UMC will pay one half of the

camp fee for children or youth from our church. Just check with the

church office for a special code to enter when registering. For details

about Dakotas United Methodist Camping program or to register, go to

www.dakcamps.org

Early Bird Deadline is May 1!

Early bird discount is $5 off per night. For Example a two night camp

would be $10 off and five night camp would be $25 off. Registrations

and full payment must be completed online or postmarked by May 1 to

receive the early bird discount.

On Sunday, May 7, Wesley UMC will be hosting a time to get to know our friends from Nepal. As many of you know, this is a group of Grand Forks resi-dents, formerly from Nepal, that have been holding a worship service at Wesley on Sunday afternoons for the last few months. As a way for us to get to know

each other better, we will host a meal and a time to talk to these new friends. They will be sharing their stories of how they came to live in Grand

Forks and their experiences along the way. So please come and welcome them and get to know them better. The meal will be served at 5:00 pm in the

dining room, with greeting time to follow.

Children’s Music

Your children have been learning a fun song about Noah and all that he went through to build the ark. They learned that he was 500 years old at the time he started and by the time he finished and it started to rain, he was 600 years

old. They learned that from the time it rained (40 days) through the time the water was on the earth, through the time it dried out and the doors of the ark were opened, was approximately one year, and most importantly, that God’s promise to his people that he will never destroy the earth again by a flood is a rainbow.

We have some changes to our program practice time. We will NOT be practicing on Saturday, May 13 any longer due to some unexpected conflicts in scheduling. You can take this commitment off your calendar. Instead, we will practice during the normal Sunday School music time on Sunday May 7th.

We will have the program during the 9:00 a.m. service on Mother’s Day, May 14th. I will need the children to be at the church at 8:15 a.m.

DID YOU KNOW?

Reminiscing through some of the pages of United Methodist Women history that

goes back 135 years -

In 1975 there was 8 circles. They were numbered 1-2-3 meeting in the mornings,

4-5-6 meeting in afternoons, 7-8 meeting in the evenings, giving a total of 189 in

membership. The numbered circles took on the following names: Sarah, Faith,

Mary-Martha, Esther, Lydia, Ruth & Rachel after awhile.

In 1982, we celebrated 100 years of United Methodist Women and it’s predeces-

sors (Women in Mission, Ladies Aid and Women’s Society of Christian Service.)

Bazaars have been held since 1972. Records show this being UMW’s main event

for raising money. With it they had white elephants sales, bargain boutique or

attic treasures that were always a big hit. The meal provided was a prize winner,

Turkey-ala-King—it’s still missed by some.

Many things around the church were purchased by the bazaar profits over the

years such as window drapes, Sunday school chairs, table cloths, dishes, large

round dining tables and in 1985, a dishwasher. The things that were in the kitch-

en and fellowship hall had to be put out on the curb after the 1997 flood because

it affected the church basement.

Lenten studies were held with other churches invited.

The women volunteered a week in August at Valley Memorial Nursing Home

doing a birthday party, bingo and other fun things. The flood then took away the

Nursing Home. Mary-Martha circle had a mother-daughter banquet. Miriam

circle held a Gay 90’s party, they also sent care packages to soldiers and college

students away form home. Mission cards were sent to new babies. UMW helped

put together cookbooks in 1969 and 1989. In 2001, UMW bought the “FAITH”

stained glass window. In 2003, a quilters group was started and is still going

strong.

Over the years many women have been honored by a special recognition for their

work in UMW and also in the church.

Each year, Wesley’s UMW gives a donation to several local charities.

The Wesley UMW pledges money each year to the UMW National Organization

for mission projects around the world.

Sunday, April 30 Meet at church at 4:00 p.m. We will be delivering May Day baskets around the Wesley neighborhood and then back to church for supper at 5:30 p.m. Youth will be over at 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, May 7 Swimming at Splasher’s Water Park at the Canad Inns. This is open to fami-lies. Cost is $12.00 per person and includes pizza and pop. Time is 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. We will meet at Splasher’s.

Sunday, May 14 Mother’s Day – no Youth. We encourage all Youth to please spend quality time with their mothers this day!

Sunday, May 21 We have five graduating seniors this year – Patrick Lamberson, Dustin Martin, Dylan Murphy, Zak Ness, and Jakob Sturges. On Sunday, May 21, we will be celebrating our seniors with a recognition between the 9:00 a.m. and Ignite ser-vice in the narthex. Please join us to view displays of their accomplishments and wish them well. Cake will be provided.

Youth Group will meet at the regular scheduled time of 5:30 p.m. for a potluck cookout. John Martin will be grilling up brats and burgers; everyone else bring the rest!! Youth families are invited to attend. This will be the last event for the year.

Do you know someone graduating in your family? We would love to

recognize their accomplishment. Let us know who in your family is grad-

uating and from where. If you have a college graduate in your family

please let us know the degree they have earned. Please let the church

Dear Parents, Families, and Friends,

Wings of Hope Bereavement Services will be conducting our semi-

annual burial service on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 10 a.m. This service is

for all parents who have experienced a miscarriage in the past six

months and any family members or friends who wish to attend. This

includes parents who have miscarried at home or another facility but

would like to be part of this service as a memorial to their little one.

This service is offered at no cost to you.

This service will be held at Babyland in Calvary Cemetery, Grand

Forks. Please use the 10th Avenue North entrance (off Columbia

Road.) All who wish to attend are welcome.
