The Wellness Wheel
The idea behind the wellness wheel is that it should be balanced and able to roll (like a wheel). If one selection of your wheel is higher or lower, your wheel becomes unbalanced and bumpy. Here at Winona State University, we recognize seven dimensions of wellness. These dimensions are intellectual wellness, spiritual wellness, emotional wellness, environmental wellness, social wellness, occupational wellness, and physical wellness. This issue of the Employee Wellness discusses all of the different dimensions of wellness and a superfood for the month of October. To get more information on the Winona State’s Wellness Wheel “like” Winona State Integrated Wellness Complex on Facebook at www.facebook.com/WinonaStateIWC. There is a wellness dimension of the day posted everyday with information or tips on that dimension. Want to know what your wellness wheel looks like and how to fix areas you’re lacking? There are a few worksheets attached to the email along with this news letter. Check it out!

Intellectual
Intellectual wellness encourages creativity and stimulating mental activity, which, keeps us better fit for the world.
Being a life long learner, getting the most out of classes and education by asking
questions, being open to new ideas, learning new skills and studying
effectively helps to keep us attuned to the world around us.
Spiritual
Spiritual wellness includes having a set of guiding beliefs, principles, or values that give
meaning and purpose to life and is an important part of one's character. Possessing
the capacity to love, have compassion for others and leading a life that is in harmony with oneself and others helps you to live a better life as well as improving the lives of
those around you.
Emotional
Emotional wellness involves having high self-esteem, confidence, satisfying
relationships, a support network and staying optimistic and enthusiastic about life. The key to living a healthy lifestyle often involves accepting one's feelings,
which helps us to understand more about others and ourselves.

Environmental
Environmental wellness engages learning and contributing to the health of the planet and a sustainable lifestyle. Recognizing our
responsibility for the quality of the air, water, and the land is a major step to
creating a better world. Making a positive impact on our environment be it our homes, our communities or our planet contributes
to healthy balance in life.
Social
Social wellness is comprised of having a supportive social network, contributing to society, valuing cultural diversity and having positive interactions with those around you. Social wellness keeps us happy, healthy and points toward the
right directions in life.
Occupational
Occupational wellness includes finding personal fulfillment and satisfaction from
our chosen career fields or life goals while maintaining balance in our lives. Positively impacting the organizations we work in and society as a whole through our careers helps ourselves and improves the lives of others.
Physical
Physical wellness is achieved by eating well, exercising, avoiding harmful habits,
getting enough sleep, recognizing the signs of disease, getting regular physical exams
and taking steps to prevent injury.
Pumpkin Pie Parfait
A pumpkin isn’t just a fall decoration anymore! Truth is pumpkins are a major superfood and a family member of
FRUITS! They’re like a melon in the gourd family. They are high in fiber and low in calories. Pumpkins are also good for the immune system, eye health, and preventing coronary heart disease. The “good stuff” is found in both canned and fresh
pumpkin.
Don’t forget about pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds contain protein, magnesium, potassium and zinc. The seeds are beneficial for stopping the growth of the prostate gland,
lowering the risk of bladder stones, helping with depression, reduce cholesterol and prevent some cancers!
Pumpkins and their seeds have many health benefits, but stay away from too many pumpkin pies, pumpkin cookies, and
pumpkin spiced lattes.
