THE WELLINGTON SCHOOL 2016 SUMMER OPTIONS

The Wellington Summer Options program helps your child to create lasting memories while learning new skills, developing emerging interests, and having fun. Wellington Summer Options provides a relaxed atmosphere with caring, creative teachers who create the perfect environment for exploration. Choose from full-day and half-day options. Come for one week, one class, or the entire summer. Design a schedule that best suits your family.

Our program offers many new classes this year. Hands-on projects that integrate scientific skills with practical application promote passionate learners. Little Medical School of Columbus is joining us for every grade level! Circus Camp will challenge students mentally and physically while having fun. A variety of classes for girls only will provide an opportunity for middle school girls to be immersed in technology and engineering, to gain empowerment and leadership skills, and to personalize their yoga experience.

Many popular classes are returning this summer such as Aviation Camp, Fencing, Tennis, Builders, and a variety of “green” classes. It’s all part of a Wellington summer experience! You’ll find programs that will instill curiosity, fun, and the love of learning in your children.

Here are some examples of how to schedule one-week programs:

Early Childhood Explorations: Thematic preschool and kindergarten classes are available morning and/or afternoon.Grade 1: Horseback Riding or Jr. Scientist at 9 am and Spanish at 12:30 pmGrade 4: Robotics all day or Builders at 9 am and Stock Market Literacy at 12:30 pmGrade 7: Week at the Circus at 9 am and Shakespeare’s Witches or Young Entrepreneurs at 12:30 pmGrade 8: Aviation Camp at 12:30 pm or Techie Camp: 3D Printing all day

Registration: Register according to the grade your student will be entering in the fall. Register online and pay by credit card at www.wellington.org/summer. Please read the catalog for details you may miss during the online registration process. If you prefer, you may complete a hard copy registration and send it to us with your check. Please make your check payable to Wellington Summer Options. If your contact information should change, please notify us immediately or go online and edit your information. Remember, many classes fill quickly, so register early.*

*If you registered online previously, please use your login. If you don’t know it, contact the Options Office at 614-324-8882.

Confirmation: After registering online, a confirmation will be sent to your e-mail. All mailed registrations will be confirmed by e-mail if we receive a valid e-mail address.

Late Fees: $25/student/class for late payment or registering after payment deadlines:Week 1 – May 22 Week 6 – June 26Week 2 – May 29 Week 7 – July 3Week 3 – June 5 Week 8 – July 10Week 4 – June 12 Week 9 – July 17Week 5 – June 19 Week 10 – July 24

Refunds/Withdrawals: A student withdrawing more than two weeks before the beginning of a class will receive a full refund minus a $25 per course processing fee. No refunds will be made after the payment deadline (see above) or for disciplinary dismissal. Full refunds will be made if we need to cancel a class. You may go online to withdraw from a

class. This money will show as a credit to your account with which you may register for other classes. If you want a refund, please contact the Options Office at 614-324-8882.

School Lunches: Campers will meet in the dining room for supervised lunch from noon to12:30 p.m. You may purchase a lunch for $25/week. Lunches will consist of kid-friendly food such as pizza, hot dogs, chicken tenders, and mac and cheese. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will be available daily. Milk and dessert or fruit are included. There will be no lunch available for field trip classes or during the last two weeks. If you want a school lunch, please check the box. Lunches will be available only to those who sign up at least a week in advance.

Courses for Credit: Wellington offers students a chance to earn credit in the summer for courses that are part of the regular school curriculum. These courses are for students ready for the challenge of intensive learning. Successful completion of a summer course will earn full credit at Wellington. Students from other schools are advised to check with their school concerning transfer of credit before registering for these courses. Historically, other schools have accepted our credits. Early Childhood Experiences: Please send a change of clothing with your child in case of “accidents.”

Extended Day: Before and after care are available to Summer Options participants from 7:30 until 9 a.m. and from 3:30 until 6 p.m. A parent or caregiver must accompany the child into before care and out of after care. Please mark the appropriate choice when you register. You may pay online or the first day of each week. Fee structure: $25/week for mornings only;

What you need to know$50/week for afternoons only. Late pick-up charges: $15 each 15 minutes or portion thereof after 6 p.m. Students whose parents or caregivers are consistently late may be dismissed from the program.

Dismissal: Students who are not participating in the Extended Day program MUST be picked up at 3:30 p.m. or they will be sent to Extended Day where a late fee will be assessed (see Extended Day).

Medication: If your child must take medication while here, please complete an Administration of Medication form. They are available from the Options Office or you may download one from www.wellington.org/summer. You and your doctor must complete and sign this form before Options personnel can dispense medication to your child. Please provide an adequate supply of your child’s medication in a labeled container, including dosage instructions and the doctor’s name. If medication is not picked up within 30 days of the last administered dose, it will be discarded.

Teaching Staff: If an unexpected change in faculty becomes necessary, students will not be notified prior to the beginning of the program. Be assured that the replacement instructor will reflect Wellington’s high standards.

Photographs: We take photographs to use for Wellington Summer Options promotions, future catalogs, and our web site. We also regularly garner news coverage for our programs. Please be sure to let us know if you do not want your child to be photographed.

Directions: The Wellington School is easily accessible from Route 315. We are located at the corner of Fishinger and Reed Roads in Upper Arlington. Please enter from the Reed Road entrance and proceed to Visitor Parking.

Come for a week of arts and crafts, music and games, stories and friends. Informal and fun, this theme-based program connects creative activities with language arts, communication, and socialization skills. Daily snacks are provided.

June 6: Little Medical School Option #701Have fun learning about the exciting and inspiring world of medicine! Using interactive demonstrations, crafts, and games, you will learn how the body and organs work, how to use instruments that real doctors use, and even tie knots like a real surgeon. Take home a stethoscope that really works and receive a diploma as a graduate of Little Medical School on your last day of medical school. Join your friends for stories, puppets, games, crafts, and lots of outdoor exploration. Study the artist Andy Goldsworthy who creates outdoor works of art using

July 5: Once Upon a Fairytale Option #705Come explore the fairytales that you know and love. You may even experience some twists and turns you never expected! July 11: A Week of Authors Option #706Spend the week enjoying Ruth Krauss, Margaret Wise Brown, Kevin Henkes, Eric Carle, and Laura Nemeroff. Compare and contrast the authors and decide what makes their books so wonderful! Create art and writings that complement the books we love. July 18: Let’s Get Messy Option #707 Did you know that learning can be messy? Use finger paints, watercolors, and fizzing paint to make art after reading Peter Reynolds’ “Ish” and “Dot.” Explore the different qualities of a mixtures including Ooblek, homemade playdough made with a variety of different ingredients, and goop. Learn to use detailed and descriptive language and your senses to talk about what you made. Get messy with cooking! Make potions and concoctions to drink and use your senses to describe them. July 25: Construction Zone Option #708Spend the week as a designer, architect, engineer, and builder! Work through the design process to create the strongest and most stable structure possible using recycled materials, cardboard, Lego, and wooden blocks. August 1: LEGO®: Amazing Animals Option #709It’s a zoo in here! Use Legos to build snakes, insects, mammals, and more. June 6: Puppetry Option #710Explore the dramatic use of puppetry using sock puppets, hand puppets, stick puppets, and marionettes. Design and build your own, unique puppets. June 13: Folktales & Fables Option #711Join your friends on a journey into folktales and fables! Read stories such as “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and the “Lion and the Mouse,” y and then become the characters as you create props and backdrops to dramatize the classics.. June 20: Li’l Gardeners Option #712Join your friends for a hands-on introduction to the fun of planting and harvesting. Experience nature up close as you explore the garden, dig for worms, and make crafts. Instructor: Laurie Barker, middle school teacher

June 27: Dress-Up Trunk Theatre Option #713Dive into the Dress-Up Trunk and choose a costume or prop! Develop a character from your selection and collaborate with your classmates to create a whole new character and a play each day. July 5: Junior Scientist Option #714Put on your lab coat and come experiment! Make crazy concoctions, create exploding glitter, and make goopy gak as you learn to be a junior scientist! July 18: All Things Seuss Option #716Amazing Seuss adventures await with themed activities and crafts, such as making your own speck and elephant ears like Horton from “Horton Hears a Who” and planting your own flower inspired by “Daisy Head Maisy.” “Oh the Places You’ll Go” with a parachute! Each day brings a new Dr. Seuss adventure culminating in a party on the last day to accompany the book “Happy Birthday to You!” Instructor: Holly Farley, Wellington Aftercare staff member

July 25: Dinosaur Discovery Option #717Take an adventure back to the Jurassic Era where you will learn about dinosaurs that roamed the Earth millions of years ago. Uncover fascinating facts, build a dinosaur replica, and develop paleontological skills while on an archeological dig. Become a paleontologist faster than ornithomimids running from T-Rex! August 1: Storybook Theatre Option #718Use your imagination, voice, and body to bring a story to life. After reading a story and exploring the characters and location, develop a play based on the story. Create your own costumes and props to bring the story from the page to the stage! Adventures with Graphic Novels Option #719Comic books and graphic novels use illustrations and words to tell a story. Delve into a variety of fiction and nonfiction comics and graphic novels, then try creating your own! Learn how to come up with good story ideas, develop the plot and characters, and create dialogue, storyboards, and illustrations. Aerial Arts Ever dream of being an acrobat in the circus? Hang suspended on aerial rings and silks while flowing through poses that test strength, flexibility, and grace.
