Non-performing loans held by Kenyan banks

rose 5.6 percent in the three months ended September, a slower increase than in the previous quarter, central bank data showed on Thursday.High lending rates at around 20 percent have caused hardship for borrowers and discouraged potential new borrowers from taking loans.

Non-performing loans totalled 60.7 billion shillings ($712.86 million) by the end of September, the central bank said, but quarterly growth decelerated from a 7.1 percent rise in the second quarter.Commercial lending rates have come down from a peak of about 25 percent in the final quarter of last year but are still high at around 20 percent, even though the central bank has slashed its benchmark rate

to 13 percent as inflation has eased.“The ratio of gross NPLs (non-performing loans) to gross loans increased from 4.5 percent in June 2012 to 4.6 percent in September 2012,” the central bank said in its banks’ supervision report for the third quarter.Non-performing loans stood at 57.7 billion shillings in September last year.Analysts said the rise in bad debts was not a cause for concern because the share of non-performing loans

only edged up.“That is not a huge growth considering where rates were and the inflation situation when the loans were outstanding,” said Francis Mwangi, a banking analyst at Standard Investment Bank.Inflation peaked at just under 20 percent last November and has since tumbled to 4.14 percent.

CFC Stanbic cash call raises 4.5B shillings

Kenya’s CFC Stanbic Holdings raised 4.5 billion

shillings ($52.7 million) from an over-subscribed

rights issue that will fund expansion, it said on Friday.

CFC Stanbic, which runs a bank and a financial services firm and is

controlled by South Africa’s Standard Bank, said in

statement the issue was over-subscribed at a rate of 112 percent.The company said the four-for-nine share issue, which was priced at 33 shillings ($0.39) each, was

75 percent subscribed by foreign investors with local players taking up the remainder.

The new CFC Stanbic shares are expected to start trading on the Nairobi bourse on Nov. 8, the company said.

The Kenyan bourse has been active with rights issues this year, mainly from commercial banks seeking to increase their capital base to meet the central bank’s required minimum limit and for expansion.

The firms that have had a cash call this year include Kenya Airways, NIC Bank, Diamond Trust Bank and Standard Chartered Bank.

Kenya Airways carried just over 1 million passengers

in its second quarter, matching its performance a year earlier, as lower traffic on European routes was offset by growth in Asian routes, it said on Thursday.

The airline, which is 26.73 percent owned by Air France-KLM and 29.8 percent by the government,

expects to carry 4 million passengers in its financial year through March 2013, up from 3.7 million over the previous 12 months.

Passenger numbers to Amsterdam, London and Paris fell 15 percent year-on-year to 134,214 as Europe’s economic woes hurt demand and the airline cut

capacity, the company said.However, traffic to the Middle East and Asia

jumped 16.5 percent to 155,940 travellers as new destinations such as New Delhi and Jeddah kicked in.On African routes, just over half a million passengers were carried during the period, down 0.5 percent year-on-year despite an increase in capacity. Traffic on domestic routes edged down by 0.4 percent, the airline said.

A 24-year-old Anthony Mutua from Kenya has developed an ultra-thin chip of crystals that can charge mobile phones when placed in shoe soles and the technology is set to go into mass production soon enough.

The chip, once installed into a regular shoe, generates electricity when you step on it, and can

be harvested in one of two ways. You can either charge a phone while in motion through a thin extension cable running from your shoe to your pocket, or, you can choose to store the electric energy and

charge your phone after you have stopped walking or running, after taking your shoes off.

1. Find a suitable place to perform the work. You will need a place with excellent ventilation, minimal dust, good lighting, electricity, and room to work around the vehicle. Residential garages are not usually suitable because of the presence of water heaters or furnaces that may cause ignition of paint fumes which can accumulate during the painting process.

2. Gather the materials and equipment you will need to do the job. See “Things You’ll Need” for a complete list, but here is a general outline:o Painting equipment

o Painto Sanding and polishing tools and supplieso Safety equipment

3. Remove rust and repair any dents you do not want to be visible when the painting is complete.

4. Remove any chrome or plastic trim which can be taken off easily and replace later. Much of the body panel moldings used on cars can be snapped off and snapped back on easily, but if a gentle attempt to remove it is not successful, do not try to force it off. Some stores sell tools that aid in the process of removing trim.

5. Sand the paint either to the bare metal, the

original primer, or at least sufficiently for the new paint to adhere to. How much you choose to sand is up to you, but the best results will require removing the paint down to bare metal, repriming the surface with an automotive primer, and then applying your finish paint.

6. Clean all surfaces thoroughly, using mineral spirits or denatured alcohol to make sure no oils (including body oils from fingers and hands) are on the car.

7. Use masking tape and paper to cover all surfaces not to be painted, including glass, window trim, door handles, mirrors, and grills. Make sure that there are no holes in the masking tape and paper that will allow overspray to get through.

o Covering your garage with plastic is also a good idea to avoid permanently coloring the whole room.manufacturer’s directions. Automotive enamels and some polyurethanes give better results with a hardener or catalyst.
