New Parking Rules for

Ashland Center!

Starting at Spring Break there will be new parking rules for parking around the Ashland Center for everyone.

People parking in the gravel lot across the street on Webster will need to have a “Virtual SOU Parking Pass” or will be ticketed. License plates will be registered with SOU and the parking attendants will be driving through electronically scanning them.

The Agency has purchased virtual passes for center staff and a few that can be assigned from the front desk, for the time period you will use them. The front desk will need to have your license plates registered each time to use them.

There will be short time drop-off and pick-up parking along the curb next to the center for parents (the old bus zone). There are also pay by the hour parking spots in SOU lots and free parking on Walker, and some of the side streets.

Please make sure you follow the new rules, share this information with others, and plan ahead if needing a pass. We do not want anyone to get a parking ticket, and we will not be paying parking tickets.

Fire Prevention Reminder

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Code (NFPA 101), limits bulletin boards, posters, and paper attached directly to walls to not more than 20 percent of the wall area. There is an exception in the educational and day-care chapters that permits up to 50 percent of the wall area to be covered if the building is protected with automatic sprinklers. The increase up to 50 percent of the wall area for sprinklers only applies to educational and day-care occupancies. In addition, the aggregate area referenced in the code is applied per wall. Adding all four walls together and placing paper, posters, or bulletin boards equal to 20 percent of that combined area on one wall is not permissible.

The Life Safety Code also requires that furnishings and decorations not be highly flammable or explosive in character. Fire Marshalls will recommend the use of fire retardant to enhance fire protection, but we have a policy that prohibits the use of chemical fire retardant, so we must adhere to the percentage limits discussed above. Your annual Fire Marshall inspection may not cite this issue because at the time of inspection the wall percentages covered may have been compliant, but these can change daily with the placement of new materials. During my facility walkthroughs, I note lots of paper on walls and want to remind you of this important fire prevention requirement.

Please complete an evaluation of the wall areas covered in your facilities to determine compliance with fire code. Keep this safety requirement in mind when you are contemplating placing any new combustible materials on classroom walls. If you can utilize room furniture like cabinets or easels, etc. to hang combustible materials on this can help minimize wall use. If you are close to the limits, move things to walls to adjust the coverage accordingly.
