Field Days to showcase the latest in agricultureBroadacre agricultural

machinery firms from across the country have led an exhibitor resurgence at this year’s 53rd Wimmera Machinery Field Days.

Field Days manager Murray Wilson said some machinery firms were either returning to the annual event after lengthy absences while others were consolidating their presence by requesting larger sites to show-case products.

He said the trend reflected confidence that national agri-cultural businesses had for the region’s rural productivity and long-term future.

“We have to remember that these companies have made the decisions to come here regard-less of what was far from a good harvest across the region,” Mr Wilson said.

“The request for sites has re-mained strong and the outdoor area is full.

“It also shows the strength of the field days that these com-panies acknowledge the event as one of biggest for broadacre cropping and machinery in the country. It’s just fantastic.”

Mr Wilson said it was also important to note that the Wim-mera farming community’s re-

sponse to the field days also un-derpinned the event’s success.

“The large firms recognise the willingness of our farmers to be associated with the latest technology to get the best out of farming enterprises. It’s because they are good farmers and know

how to run their businesses ef-ficiently.”

The field days continue to evolve and Mr Wilson said the introduction of variety of infor-mation forums this year would add a new dimension to the event.

“The main idea behind it is that we always have a lot of things on but there is not always someone available to talk in depth about subjects,” he said.

“We’ve set up a pavilion to allow for this key feature of field days. There will be guests involved as speakers and pre-senters in forums specifically for farmers and land managers.

“Organisations are pleased they have this opportunity to get information out about every-thing from programs and fund-ing opportunities to the latest technology available and basi-cally what’s happening now and in the future.

“It will give everyone a chance to have a break, to kick back and listen to the experts. We hope to make it an annual part of the field days so it will be interesting to see how it comes together.”

This year’s field days, apart from the latest in farm machin-ery, will also feature an eclec-tic mix of vendors, exhibitions, demonstrations and guest per-sonalities.

The Wimmera Machinery Field Days will be Wimmera Events Centre at Longerenong, north of Horsham, on March 3, 4 and 5.

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY: The Wimmera Machinery Field Days provides plenty of interest and activities for adults and children.

I have great pleasure on behalf of the organising committee and staff to welcome you to the 53rd annual Wimmera Ma-chinery Field Days.

Once again we have poured hours of passion and dedication into setting up and presenting the site for our exhibitors to showcase their latest technology and innovation from Australia and abroad together with a blend of business and lifestyle interests. Our three-day event has gained a strong reputation of providing attendees with the finest opportunity to view the best in modern broadacre agriculture while also promot-ing everything you need to enjoy what the Wimmera has to offer with our ‘can-do’ attitude and relaxed way of life.

While the main purpose of the Wimmera Machinery Field Days is to help farmers investigate machinery and equip-ment options for their businesses, it is also an informative event where growers and primary producers can participate in select agricultural forums, which will be during the event. We are proud of our exhibitors who attend and we appreci-ate our sponsors’ continued support. Combined with the committee’s efforts to constantly improve the site to meet our patrons’ needs, it is great to see it all combine to con-tribute to a successful event.

With sincere thanks I want to recognise the wives, hus-bands, patrons and children of the committee, who are as tireless in their support. I would also like to acknowledge all the community organisations that help run the Wimmera Machinery Field Days, which also provide significant fund-raising opportunities for their club.

Once more I welcome you all to the 2015 Wimmera Ma-chinery Field Days, I hope your visit to our event drives profitability for your business, provides you with social connections and ideas for enjoying your lifestyle.

Farmer forumsA series of forums at this

year’s Wimmera Ma-chinery Field Days will edu-cate farmers on a variety of agricultural topics.

The forums, will be at the Sponsors Pavilion, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Birchip Cropping Group chief executive Chris Souness will kick off the forums at 10am on Tuesday.

Mr Souness will speak about risk management on farms, fo-cusing on the question: Should you try and beat the odds?

At 2pm on Tuesday, Tony Baker and Luke Austin, from Wimmera Catchment Man-agement Authority, will speak about funding for farmers, highlighting financial oppor-tunities and funding available to enhance and protect natural landscapes, native vegetation and on-farm waterways.

Glenn Fitzgerald, from the Department of Economic De-velopment, Jobs, Transport and Resources, Horsham, will dis-cuss the AGFACE Project.

Mr Fitzgerald will address ‘future food for thought’ and how Victorian scientists are working to identify and rec-tify the challenges of growing food crops under higher carbon dioxide levels tipped for 2050.

On Thursday, at 10am, Rob-ert Suter, also from the De-partment of Economic Devel-opment, Jobs, Transport and Resources, Horsham, will dis-cuss livestock ‘alive’.

Mr Suter will discuss five years of data on crucial factors for a healthy Victorian sheep flock and what can be applied at the farm level to achieve a more productive and healthy flock.

Andrew Newell, of Newag Consulting, and Darren Jones, of Agritech Rural, will present

the final forum at the field days with a 2pm discussion on new generation of super weeds.

The pair will investigate the types of hard-to-kill weeds that are appearing in broadacre farming, why they are occur-ring and management options to control the weeds before they control farmers.

LIVE FROM THE FIELD DAYS: WIN News weather presenter Britt Ditterich will host the weather from the field days on Tuesday. Britt’s weather report will be broadcast across the WIN television network.

Imagine impressing your guests with buttermilk pana cotta and spice pairs or Indonesian satay lamb shoulder with wombok noodle.

People can learn all this and more from 2014 My Kitchen Rules winner Bree May, who will exhibit her cooking ex-pertise at this year’s field days auditorium.

Bree will show the most amateur cooks how to impress with their meals, with shows at 10am, noon and 3pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, and 10am and noon on Thursday.

She will excite the senses with daily demonstrations of easy-to-make gourmet food, ranging from entrées to de-serts and side dishes.

Demonstrations include meals like rabbit pumpkin and pea risotto, Thai red duck cur-ry, fish tacos with corm and tomato salsa and much more.

College runwayForget about Melbourne

Fashion Week, the talented year 9, 11 and 12 students from Horsham College are sure to give Yves Saint Lauren a run for his money.

Students from the college

will hit the runway each day at 2pm to showcase their tal-ents in design and textiles as part of the anticipated fashion show Time to Shine.

During the runway spectacu-lar, students from Horsham College production ‘Alice in Wonderland’ will perform, showcasing a wide range of vocal talents.

‘Time to Shine’ will also feature a special display of dresses from the 2014 Hor-sham College Debutant Ball. Be sure to drop by the audito-rium each day at 2pm to watch students strut their stuff.

Shared field siteIt will all be about farming, fish, flora,

fauna and flows when you visit the Victo-rian Government site at D1-4 at Wimmera Machinery Field Days.

The shared marquee will provide the latest information about agricultural research and ex-tension, fishing, water catchments, and fire and environmental management.

The Department of Economic Development Jobs Transport and Resources will have plenty of information about how agricultural businesses can make the most of their cropping and live-stock enterprises.

The Department’s Animal Health staff will be available to help with any livestock health and welfare issues. At 11am each day there will be a sheep brain-removal demonstration providing a chance to hear about the importance of testing brains from sheep who have died unexpectedly.

Grain farmers can reap plenty of important information from the site with information about climate, soils and nutrients. Producers wanting to pursue business and farm-planning courses

should also call in to discuss their needs with the department’s Land Health Team.

Crop Doctor Frank Henry will be on hand on Wednesday, and scientists Dr Mark McLean and Joshua Fanning present throughout the week.

The 2015 Cereal Disease Guide and updated fact sheets will be available and the Cereal Pa-thology Team’s new truck and state of the art plot harvester on display with specialist technical staff to provide information.

The new Victorian Recreational Fishing Guide 2015, covering recreational fishing gear entitle-ments and daily catch and size limits, will be available for anglers.

Staff from the Department of Environment Wa-ter and Planning will also be on hand to discuss a range of issues including native vegetation and threatened species and there will be maps show-ing areas affected by fire areas in the region.

Staff from Vicmap Topographic Maps, will again display their maps showing natural and constructed features. Wimmera Catchment Man-agement Authority will also be in the marquee, featuring a children’s section.

NEW ADDITION: Department of Economic Development, Jobs Transport and Resources staff Tom Pritchard, Jordan McDonald, Josh Fanning and Graham Exel with the new cereals truck, which can carry a trial plot harvester and store enough fuel to work for a day, while also being able to put out any fires that might ignite during harvest.

300 trillion reasons to visit science siteVisitors have literally

trillions of reasons to visit the Department of Eco-nomic Development Jobs Transport and Resources Wimmera Machinery Field Days site.

With 2015 the International Year of Soil, there will be plen-ty of opportunities to get the dirt on soils in the marquee at sites D1-4.

Just one teaspoon of soil can host about one billion living microbes, which means the 10m by 15m DEDJTR site will be home to roughly 300 tril-lion microbes in the top 10cm of soil.

That is a lot of little bugs and microbes in one spot.

Visitors won’t be asked to count them, but they can see and learn about different types of soil microbes, and what role they play in helping grow crops to feed the world.

People will also be able to get a worm’s eye view of the soil that grows our crops in the form of large intact soil cores taken from the Western District, Wimmera and Mallee regions.

These 120-150kg cores, which were used in trials inves-tigating the impacts of higher carbon dioxide levels on crops, will be featured in the tent, pro-

viding a fascinating compari-son from different soils and a history lesson on how different soils form.

While volcanic activity and

higher rain has influenced the more acid soils in southern Victoria, an inland sea bed and wind erosion helped create the Wimmera’s grey cracking clays

and dunes from this sea are the basis of the Mallee’s sandy soil.

Scientist believe careful man-agement of soils, backed up by research and development, is the bedrock of our agricul-tural production, profitability and exports.

The department’s soil science research expertise extends across chemistry, physics and biology and skilled extension staff help translate science into practical on-farm management recommendations.

Staff are also involved in im-proving knowledge and map-ping of soil types and associ-ated soil properties relevant to

agricultural production. Visitors to the site will see

how the department remains at the forefront of soil science and is engaged in a range of cutting-edge activities, includ-ing remote sensing and digital soil mapping, improving nutri-ent management and fertiliser efficiencies, maximising soil water availability, understand-ing soil biological functions, and overcoming physical and chemical constraints to plant growth.

Science is also on the agenda at the site, with information about the Australian Grains Genebank, which houses 150 million seeds at Horsham.

Sky high imageryWimmera business

Emmetts has joined forces with US company Agribotix to provide drone-based aerial crop-imagery ser-vices to farmers throughout the Wimmera-Mallee.

Emmetts Agribotix Hornets will collect true colour, RGB, and near infrared, NIR, image-ry at three-centimetre ground resolution, providing a detailed view of the field from above.

Used to measure relative veg-etation health within-field and in combination with historical field data, imagery captured from the drones provides in-formation which can be used in generating prescription maps and management zones.

Other applications include whole-field crop inspections, weed identification, and yield estimations.

Additionally, Emmetts can now complete advanced ana-lytics on historical yield data collected in previous seasons, to provide Spatial Yield Trends and Yield Stability Maps, which highlight areas within paddocks that require different management strategies.

The data, in addition to real- time information captured from the drone, gives the grower and their advisor an important insight into their crops health and paddock performance, over multiple seasons.

This allows more accurate and insightful agronomic deci-sions during the growing sea-

son.The maps can then be used

to generate management zones, which with the support of their agronomic advisor, can be modified and developed as prescription maps that are up-loaded into their variable rate enabled equipment.

This allows the grower to move towards prescription farming, allowing variable-rate nutrient application, spraying and seeding.

Emmetts have a range of services and equipment avail-able to assist in the application of precision farming, includ-ing the GreenStar agricultural management systems and Apex farm management software.

John Deere web-based plat-forms, MyJohnDeere and JD Connect, have wireless data connectivity that allows the

seamless transfer of agronomic data, and data sharing with trusted partners.

JDLink allows users to have the ability to monitor machine health and performance, set up an alert and code monitoring, with the ability for remote-service diagnostics.

Emmetts also offer infield environmental weather and soil-moisture monitoring solu-tions with the John Deere Field Connect systems, which al-low multiple weather sensors, rain gauges and soil-moisture probes.

With the addition of custom-ised support agreements, Em-metts offer a complete AMS support solution.

For people seeking more in-formation can contact Integrat-ed Solutions Team on 5382 9400.

FROM THE AIR UP THERE: Emmetts now provide a drone to take aerial crop imagery to Wimmera farmers.

Blender bikes support programWimmera Uniting Care

will again offer a range of smoothies and milk shakes in Wimmera Ma-chinery Field Days’ Country Gourmet Pavilion to raise money for its Rural and Re-mote Engagement program.

Organiser Adele Rohde said for $5, field days patrons were invited to pick a smoothie fla-vour and then hop on the bike to mix it up by pedalling for about 30 seconds.

“We’ll also have our RARE worker and a number of other staff on hand to blend it for you for a gold coin donation,” she said.

Ms Rohde said with ‘gluten and lactose free options avail-able for those with allergies,’

and at least seven yummy fla-vours to choose from, the event shouldn’t be missed.

The community service or-ganisation has also added iced coffee to its menu for the first time.

Coles Horsham, the event’s major sponsor, will provide all the ingredients, and the Wim-mera Machinery Field Days committee has donated the hire of the Bike ‘N Blend bikes.

“Not only is that a fantastic fundraiser for RARE but it’s a great way to engage with the community,” Ms Rohde said.

“We had so much fun last year and we’re hoping to make it even bigger and better in 2015.”

The RARE program, which

operates in the Yarriambiack and West Wimmera shires, is funded by a combination of philanthropies, councils and Wimmera Uniting Care and helps some of the most vulner-able people in the community.

As part of the agency’s in-take, team RARE was a final-ist in 2013 Victorian Health Promotion Awards under the ‘Improving Mental Wellbeing’ category.

Mrs Rohde said field days patrons could support the pro-gram by having a bit of fun and enjoying a cool drink.

RARE worker Mal Coutts will be on-hand at the field days to discuss the program and provide information about services available in the region.

SMOOTH: Wimmera Uniting Care staff Melissa Maybery, Jenni Miller, Adele Rohde, RARE worker Mal Coutts, Claire Hewson, Michelle Freeman, Phoebe Weier at the field days last year. Below, Mal Coutts and Claire Hewson are pictured making a smoothie by cycling to power a blender.

O’Connors has opened western Victoria’s newest truck parts and service outlet.

Backed by Iveco and ser-vicing brands like Mack, Kenworth and International, the new venture will operate out of O’Connors’ Horsham and Birchip dealerships.

O’Connors group after sales manager Gareth Webb said many of the firm’s ex-isting clients had trucks as part of their machinery fleet.

“The Horsham and Birch-ip dealerships have a strong legacy of providing out-standing service and tech-nical support over many years,” he said.

“They play an integral role in assisting our customers to achieve maximum yields and efficiencies.

“This new venture will only improve these efficien-cies while expanding our ability to support them.”

Though backed by Iveco, O’Connors will source and stock parts for majority of major truck brands.

“Regardless of the make and model, your truck is in good hands with our team of service technicians and parts staff,” Mr Webb said.

NEW Magnetic Levitation Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Herbicide resistantLake Bolac farmer Neil Vallance is tack-

ling the growing herbicide-resistance problem by implementing new Integrated Weed Management technology onto his 3900 hectare mixed farming enterprise.

Mr Vallance said high levels of herbicide-resistant weeds in Victoria’s western districts, brought on by an over reliance on Group A chemicals, meant landholders had to find innova-tive ways to combat weeds.

“We’ve seen increasing resistance to Select through seed testing, with levels up to 30 per-cent,” he said.

“It’s not about relying on one herbicide; it’s about using a range of everything.”

Vallance said that Roundup-Triazine, RT, hy-brid canola, provided a tool for control on a wide range of weeds including ryegrass and wild radish.

According to developers Pacific Seeds and Monsanto, it combines the broad spectrum knockdown control of Roundup Ready with the residual activity of triazine herbicides.

“RT provides the option of TT and Roundup Ready if you need it, so that’s where its strength lies. It’s going to find a place in the herbicide resistance model,” Mr Vallance said.

Vallance runs 3900-hectare mixed-farming en-terprise ‘Braebrook’ with his wife Helen, broth-ers Max and Graeme, and their wives Jane and Rachel.

Their operation consists of 2500 hectares of cropping – mainly canola, wheat, barley and oats – 3000 sheep consisting of Merino and Coop-worth ewes, and a piggery of 450 Landrace-cross sows.

Last year they grew open pollinated triazine tolerant varieties, Thumper TT and Wahoo ATR, Roundup Ready, Cargill Victory and Hyola 525RT.

They began sowing canola late April at a rate of 3kg/ha to provide some defence against slugs.

“In general, GM hybrid canola shows im-proved early vigour and higher yields here com-pared to conventional varieties, and it gets cold

quickly in this area which brings out the slugs, so we need as much ground cover as quickly as we can,” he said.

Zinc MAP sulphur was applied at 90kg/ha plus 200kg urea, with 80kg at sowing and the balance top dressed in July.

All the canola received 3L/ha of trifluralin pre-emergent, with Roundup Ready herbicide and Atrazine applied onto the RT technology.

All RT was direct headed around December 18.Mr Vallance said the family’s 2014 winter crop

season was the driest in almost a decade, with rainfall reaching 373mm; well short of their an-nual 525mm average.

“Rain was down last season by about 150mm and we haven’t had a season that bad since 2006.”

Despite this, their newest addition of IWM technology yielded 1.8t/ha.
