Jesus prepared his disciples for his Ascension by telling them, “In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me.” How do we see him aſter his ascension? We discover Jesus as Peter teaches, by accounting for the hope that is in us with gentleness and reverence. In other words, All Saints’ makes Jesus visible by the gentleness with which we treat each other and by the reverence by which we love others. Young adults at the diocesan conference told us that what they most want is to belong. at is, they are looking for a community of gentleness and reverence. It can be challenging to be that kind of community, and easy to fall short of the ideal. A teacher of one of our students decided to visit All Saints’; on her first Sunday she overheard people complaining, so she joined another congregation instead. Yet our gentleness and reverence have been experienced by many who have joined our parish recently—we oſten get it right! As a nation, we remember this weekend those who laid down their lives for the ideal we call democracy. Prompted by Donald Sterling and the NBA, we once again wrestle with racism. Aſter 250 years of slavery and 100 years of Jim Crow laws, we finally enacted the Civil Rights bill and are incrementally making progress in gentleness and reverence. e Bishop of the Armed Forces recently offered to help All Saints’ adopt an Episcopal chaplain.
