Happy Father’s DayI had two options for the subject matter of

this month's editorial. I could either wax elo-quent about Father's Day or choose from amyriad of festivals scheduled for this month.

Festivals are great. There are thousands ofvarieties to entertain, educate and enrich us.But festivals come and go whereas fathers areimportant all the time. Festivals or Fathers?Fathers or Festivals? Festivals to/with/for/about Fathers? Activities could include a most-beloved t-shirt fashion show. Or perhaps it wouldbe more interesting to hold a World's Ugliest TieCompetition. When it came right down to it, therewas no contest. Somewhere in the middle of thebattle of the F's between fathers and festivals, I was remind-ed of a story from a long time ago.

The Story of the Prodigal Son in the Key of FFeeling footloose and fancy free, a feather- brained fel-

low asked his fond father to fork over the family finances. He fled far into foreign fields and frittered away his for-tune feasting fabulously with faithless friends. Finally, hefound himself a feed flinger in a filthy farmyard.

“Forsooth!” said he. “My father's flunkies fare far fanci-er.” So he returned to his fond father and said, “Father, Ihave flunked! I have foolishly forfeited family favor.”

“Phooey!” said fond father. “Fetch the fatted fatling.Let frivolous folly begin for fond frater has returned.”

So often, this story focuses on the son and his returnhome. But let's consider the many attributes of the father. He was generous, patient, forgiving, loving and welcomedhis son's return in spite of the many bad choices thisyoung man had made.

One time during a women's group study, someone madethe comment that nobody had a good father figure. Iquickly disagreed. My father was all the things a fathershould be: loving, patient, generous, gentle, faithful, for-giving, respectful . . . and the list goes on. No, he wasn'tperfect. No one is. He will be the first person to say so,which also makes him very humble.

This year for Father's Day, take the time to let yourfather know how much you love him and appreciate him.I just did. Now, all I have left to do is plan a Festival forFathers. Now what did I do with that ragged old shirtand ugly necktie?

Although these coastal citieshave received quite a bit of atten-tion from the filming of SafeHaven and other televisionshows and movies, they stillmaintain their charm and small-town feel.
