From the Editors If you google Barrister’s Ball,” you’ll be confronted with 13,800 hits and find that the alliterative appellation is used by law schools across the country for various formal and semi-formal soiree’s. From NYU to Loyola, law students don finery and down cocktails in palatial settings under the Barrister’s Ball banner. Fortunately for you, the Santa Clara School of Law’s Barrister’s Ball has been acclaimed as the finest, most spectacular and, by far, the most fun of all similarly named events! Our unscientific poll* reveals that the 2005 SCU Barrister’s Ball was found to have 28% more class than the event put on at the Tulsa Ramada Inn. More data shows that while 89% of attendees of our event rated the dinner as either “above average to exceptional,” students at the Oliver Barnes School of Law rated their Barrister’s Ball servings as “unacceptable” to the tune of 92% (catering by KFC may have affected the vote). The bottom line is that this year’s SCU Barrister’s Ball is expected to blow the
doors off of every category and is being held at the famous Fairmont Hotel in the midst of downtown San Jose. You’ve got only 2 days to reserve your tickets, so please take advantage of what will unquestionably be the highlight of the law school social calendar once more. IF you need any more persuasion, we’ll just point out that a healthy number of faculty members always attend. You’ll never have a better opportunity to shamelessly lobby your professors during cocktail hour and dinner at the Barrister’s Ball. See you there! Finally, on a completely different note, Sandy would like to thank the Good Samaritan who left a note on her car last week, informing her that she had a flat tire. It saved her a lot of hassle, for which she is very grateful. Thank you for your thoughtfulness! Sincerely, Jennifer and Sandra * Neither the poll nor the two events to which Santa Clara’s Barrister’s Ball is compared actually exist. (As we hope you already gathered.)

The Health Care Law Society presents: Dr. Jonathan Kahn.
Dr. Kahn holds a PhD in History from Cornell University and a JD from Boalt Hall School of Law, Dr. Jonathan Kahn writes on issues in history, politics, and law and
specializes in biotechnology implications for our ideas of identity and citizenship. Currently, he is studying the
legal and ethical implications of how racial categories are produced and disseminated in the course of drug
development. Emerging from new ways of thinking about individuals and their relation to society, "genetic
citizenship" has become a critical category for assessing and assigning legal rights, forming an important
relationship between constitutional law and intellectual property.
