    2014-2015 Annual Report of Private Giving

  • MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOLRabbi Edward Harwitz

    Rejoice and celebrate Abraham, Isaac and Jacob for these students are your legacy!

    At the recent graduation of the Weber class of 2015, I quoted these powerful words attributed to Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai in Jerusalem during the first century C.E. Speaking on the brink of the Roman overthrow and occupation of Palestine, a time of dire peril facing the Jewish community, the greatest religious and educational leader of his day reminded his community of the central role that students, teachers and schools play in the ongoing story of the Jewish people. During times of great joy and sadness, unity and discord, success and suffering, education has served to unify the Jewish people, enabling us to survive and thrive and make our unique contribution to the world.

    I am filled with a deep sense of appreciation and gratitude when I reflect upon Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkais charge and the remarkable year of growth and innovation that occurred at The Weber School during 2014-2015. It was a year filled with advancements in our academic and co-curricular programming, driven by the professionalism and dedication of our faculty and staff, and filled with student success and leadership.

    Highlights include:

    An expanded array of academic courses, including unique elective and AP options;

    The launch of an innovative pre-professional Fine and Performing arts curriculum featuring artists in residence;

    An exciting new Music program with choral and instrumental performance ensembles;

    The introduction of our Inaugural Capstone Project in General and Jewish Studies with Honors Distinction;

    The development of PRISM: a student-led Israel Advocacy group; and

    Athletic successes including the launch of our swim team, our 5th straight Girls Tennis region championship, Positive Athlete Georgia regional and state awards, and students selected for All-State and All-Region teams across all of our sports.

    This year, The Weber School received philanthropic support at every level, including a record-breaking year for Annual Giving. We thank you, our friends who so generously invest in The Weber School, for supporting the powerful and sacred role that our students, parents, and teachers play in the ongoing story of the Jewish people.

    We have many reasons to rejoice and celebrate as we complete Webers 18th year. With your continued support, we look forward to an outstanding year ahead!

    With best wishes,

    Rabbi Edward Harwitz Head of School

  • REPORT OF PRIVATE GIVINGThe Weber School

    Throughout the academic year, The Weber School is the grateful recipient of gifts large and small. A summary of this giving, from all sources, is found below. With thanks, we acknowledge all donors who made a charitable gift to The Weber School during the 2014-2015 year by name in the lists found on the following pages.

  • UNRESTRICTED GIVINGThe 2014-2015 Annual Giving Campaign

    The essential core of Webers philanthropic support comes each year from its Annual Giving campaign. Led by a group of committed volunteers, this annual fund drive reaches out to each Weber constituency its Board of Trustees, parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends and invites each person to make a gift. Large or small, each gift helps subsidize the schools day-to-day operational needs and enables students and faculty to access the learning and enrichment opportunities that contribute to Webers academic strength and robust Jewish life. This years campaign was a huge success! With exceptional leadership from Co-Chairs Debbie Kuniansky and Angie Wildstein, along with grade representatives and other volunteers, the campaign raised over $418,000 toward its $400,000 goal! With appreciation, Weber acknowledges the over 600 persons who supported the campaign.

    Each year, many donors choose to direct their gifts, stipulating that they be used exclusively and fully for a specific program or project in which they have a deep interest or affinity. These temporarily restricted gifts often make an enormous difference to the project or program they support, to the ultimate benefit of students and faculty.

  • THE JOSEPH SORIANO SCHOLARSHIPScholarship Established in Honor of BelovedWeber School Alumnus Joseph Soriano 04

    As a Weber School student, Joseph Soriano added a unique energy and personality to the school, one that engendered friendship, admiration and warmth. A young man with an indelible spirit, intellectual curiosity, and a love of all things athletic, Joseph made a profound impact on those who knew him his classmates, his teachers, his counselors. News that a tragic accident took his life on September 1, 2012 devastated his family and friends. In November 2014, The Barbara and Sanford H. Orkin Family Foundation established an endowed scholarship to honor Joseph and perpetuate his memory. Reflecting Josephs love of learning and athletics, The Joseph Soriano Scholarship, funded with a gift of $1 million, will provide up to four years of need-based support for Weber students who demonstrate excellence in athleticism, strength in academics and commitment to community. Six Weber students have been named Soriano Scholars for the 2015-16 academic year. Joseph thrived at Weber in every way, said his grandfather Sanford Orkin. Our family wanted to perpetuate that legacy by creating an enduring means of honoring him at the School. The Joseph Soriano Scholarship will serve as a permanent memorial tribute to Joseph, perpetuating his name and his spirit while providing significant financial support to deserving Weber students for years to come.We are moved by the incredible gesture of love for Joseph that his family has made to and through Weber. This named scholarship will be a living tribute to Joseph Soriano, and will have a powerful impact on Webers future. Our community is very grateful, said Rabbi Ed Harwitz, Webers Head of School.

    Members of Joseph Sorianos family gathered at Weber in November to mark the es-tablishment of The Joseph Soriano Scholarship. Pictured L to R: Lauren Soriano, Sherri Soriano, Morris Soriano, Barbara Orkin, Laurie Ginburg, Sanford Orkin, David Ginburg, Judy Orkin, MIchael Orkin, Kenneth Orkin

    Joseph Soriano (z"l) was a kind, spirited and widely admired young man. Family members established The Joseph Soriano Scholarship to reflect all that was best about Josephhis warmth, his passion for sports, and his willingness to help others.

  • MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OFTHE WEBER SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEESTonia Sellers

    The view from where I stand is amazing! Clearly, The Weber Schools 2014-15 academic year was a dynamic year of positive change, one that left us breathlessyet eager to begin again.

    Topping the change was the arrival of Webers new Head of School. Rabbi Ed Harwitz joined us in May, bringing with him an energetic vision for what a 21st Century Jewish high school should look like. Rabbi Harwitzs strong day-school leadership experience and deliberate yet innovative approach to Jewish

    education helped enable a cultural transformation at Weber this year. From students to faculty, administration to Board, and parents to alumni, Rabbi Harwitz responded to the call for change. Students and faculty now enjoy a more robust learning environment, where knowledge is deepened, character is developed, judgment is tested, and opportunities abound for showcasing talent and skill.

    In November, Weber held a poignant ceremony to change its name to The Felicia Penzell Weber Jewish Community High School. This name change was made to honor school co-founder Felicia Weber (z"l), one of its most loving, influential and supportive friends, whom we lost in October 2013.

    The 2014-15 academic year was one of amazing generosity from Weber families and friends. The contributions acknowledged in this report went directly into helping achieve meaningful change in the academic and operational fabric of the school, positive change that is helping Weber grow and thrive as a private Jewish high school.

    Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. This famous Margaret Mead quote could not be a more apt description of our Board leadership and the impact they had on Weber this year. Charged with the financial stewardship and strategic direction of the school, this years Trustees gave Weber their professional and personal best to help position it for a strong and enduring future.

    As we conclude Webers 18th year, and look to the next generation of Weber students, we renew our commitment to build a strong Jewish future. With your continued support, we know we will realize this vision. On behalf of The Board of Trustees of The Weber School, thank you for your support this year.

    Sincerely,
