The Weater
The weather: cold; warm/hot; wet;
wind
Cold weather
Cold weather In Scandinavia, the chilly
(1) days of autumn soon change to the cold days of winter. The first frosts (2) arrive and the roads become icy. Rain becomes sleet (3) and then snow, at first turning to slush (4) in the street, with severe blizzards (5) and snowdrifts (6) in the far north. Freezing (7) weather often continues in the far north until May or even June, when the ground starts to thaw (8) and the ice melt (9) again.
1 cold, but not extremely 2 thin white coat of ice on
everything 3 frozen or partly frozen rain and
snow mixed 4 dirty, brownish, half-melted snow 5 heavy snow blown by high winds 6 deep banks of snow against
walls, etc. 7 extremely cold, with
temperatures at or below the freezing point
8 change from hard, frozen state to more liquid
9 change from solid to liquid under heat
Warm/hot weather
Stifling (hot, uncomfortable; you can hardly breathe)
Humid (moist, damp air)Muggy (unpleasantly warm and
extremely humid; makes you sweat)
Scorching (burning heat)boiling (excessively hot)

stuffy)Mild (moderate; not severe or

Translatedamp drizzle pour torrential rain floodFall is usually chilly and damp with rain and drizzle. It was absolutely pouring. There was a real downpour. In the tropics there is often torrential rain, and the roads get
flooded. This rain won’t last long; it’s only a shower. The storm damaged several houses. We got soaked in the thunderstorm.Hailstones battered the roof of our car.The sky’s overcast; I think it’s going to rain.We had drought last summer. It didn’t rain for six weeks. The air was misty after the light rain.It was so foggy that I could barely see ahead of me.
WindThere was a gentle breeze on the beach, just enough to cool us. It’s a blustery day; the gusts of wind will just blow the umbrella away. There’s been a gale warning; it would be crazy to go sailing.People boarded up their windows when they heard a hurricane was on the way.

My first experience of real winter weather was when I went to Northern Canada. I was used to the kind of snow that falls back home, which quickly turns into brown …. With all the people walking in it.

What kinds of weather do you think caused the following to happen? Write a sentence that could go before each of these.
We had to sit in the shade if we went outdoors.
I can hardly breathe; I wish it would rain to cool us down.
Even the mail carrier had to use a boat to get around.
They had to close the airport; it was three feet deep.
We were able to sit in the garden in the middle of winter.
The earth became rock-hard and a lot of plants died that summer.
It blew the newspaper completely out of my hands.
A row of big trees was uprooted like matchsticks.
There was an awful heat wave last month.
It’s muggy today.
We had terrible floods.
There was a blizzard that night. Do you remember how mild it was
that year? There was a very bad drought.
Suddenly there was a very strong gust of wind.
After the gale, the damage was unbelievable.

Planting flowers in the garden
