The way to Christmas lies through an ancient gate… It is a little gate, child-high, child- wide, and there is a
password: “Peace on earth to men of
good will.” May you, this Christmas, become as a little child again and enter into
His Kingdom. ~Angelo Patri
Wishing you a Blessed Christmas

Providing the assistance you need to stay at home
Health and Safety Corner: Winter Safety Tips
OWCS Workers who are coming into your home, need to be able to access it safely. We ask that you keep your driveway and path to the door clear of ice and snow.
Please remember that many workers will be driving to your home and that street parking is not always possible, especially in the winter when street parking is restricted.
If you happen to be snowed in and are expecting a worker, we ask that you call the
OWCS office to inform us. Service may be delayed until a safe path to your home can be cleared. Going for a walk outside? Carry a small bag of salt, sand and or non-clumping cat litter
in your pocket to spread on icy patches when out walking. Cover up all parts of your body when you go outside. If your skin turns red, dark, or
starts hurting, go inside right away. On icy surfaces, take small flat-footed steps. Wear boots with a non skid sole so that you are less likely to slip
when you walk. If you use a cane, replace the rubber tip before it’s worn smooth.
You might also buy an ice pick like attachment that fits onto the end of the cane to help prevent falls. You can find this at most medical supply stores, pharmacies, Walmart and Amazon.ca

OWCS Fundraising Corner! For 35 years OWCS has operated with financial prudence and within budget. In
the fall of 2015, OWCS was informed by the city of Ottawa-who provide
$70,000 in funding, that they will require OWCS a condition of
that funding to develop a stability/contingency fund. They have
determined that our current small contingency fund is not
sufficient. The withdrawal of city funding would seriously
jeopardize the ability to provide some of our services. The OWCS
Board of Directors is determined to ensure all our services to
seniors continue and in this vein will direct all future donations to the Stability
Fund, unless otherwise specified. We are asking you to consider directing your
future donations to the OWCS Stability Fund. We have always been humbled and
inspired by the generosity of OWCS clients and volunteers, and we thank you in
advance for your support. Please take a moment to fill out the donation slip inserted
in this newsletter and mail it back to our centre.
An official donation receipt will be issued for tax purposes.

Did you know: In the Christmas film
“It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey
refers to his daughter, Zuzu as “my little
ginger snap.” This is a reference to the
brand name of ginger snaps that was made
by the National Biscuit Company
(Nabisco) at the time.
