both countries. They refused to let us stay neutralA. Britain was interfering in U.S. shipping. They

would stop our ships and not let us sell or buy goods overseas.

C. England began supporting Native American resistance to American settlers. England encouraged Native Americans to kill American settlers. Supplied them with guns, ammunition and promised a safe place to hide in British forts in Canada.

Results:Americans felt that England wasn’t respecting our

II. War of 1812Important Events

For the most part England tried to just ignore us because they were already fighting France. We fought a few battles at sea. Won some.

A. After England defeated Napoleon (France) in 1814, they turned their attention to America. British forces burned the U.S. Capital building and the White House.

B. Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that became our National Anthem=The Star Spangled Banner

In September 1814, the British attacked Ft. McHenry at Baltimore.

The Commander at Ft. McHenry had earlier requested a flag “so large that the British will have

no difficulty in seeing it.” For 25 hours the British bombed Fort McHenry from

ships outside of Baltimore harbor. The Americans refused to surrender, and Baltimore was saved. Held on a British ship, a Washington lawyer named Francis Scott Key watched the all night battle.

At dawn, Key discovered that the flag was still flying over the fort.

He expressed his pride for America in a poem that later became the U.S. national anthem.

C. Andrew Jackson became a hero by beating the British at the Port of New Orleans

British wanted to take the Port of New Orleans. They sent 7,500 troops in dozens of ships.

As the British were headed to New Orleans, General Andrew Jackson had his troops build protective walls of dirt for

them to hide behind. When the British attacked, the American riflemen mowed

them down while staying hidden. This was a great victory for Jackson and the Americans.

America lost 71 men but the British lost 2,000.Jackson was a hero who would later go on to become

President.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90uEEGHGSnU

There was no clear winner. In the Treaty of Ghent:

Most Important Effect of the War:

C. Because we became isolated from Europe, we were forced to become more independent economically. The war kept us from buying goods from European countries so we had to start making our own goods. This encouraged the growth of manufacturing. Led to the Industrial Revolution. Americans opened factories, produced their own goods and we became less dependent on foreign made goods.
