THE COSMETIC SECTOR IN WALLONIA

Situated on the borders of the

Ardennes, in the south-east of

Belgium, isolated from the main road

and transportation axes, is a small

town called Spa. One could believe

that this town wouldn’t have any

particular destiny, but its reputation

widely over-passed the Belgian

boundaries insomuch that “Spa”

became a common English word to

designate a water treatment also

known as balneotherapy.

Spa owes its reputation to its mineral

water springs. Specifics geologic

conditions give the water curative

virtues that were already highly

valued back in the Roman times.

From the 16th century, therapists

from all over Europe started to flock

to Spa in order to discover, use and

study the beneficial effects of the

water.

Nowadays, the place is still renowned

and appreciated for its thermal

benefit as well as for its tranquillity

and serenity.

Spa Mineral

water is sold all

over the world

including in

Hong Kong (at

Park’n Shop),

Taiwan, Shanghai, Beijing and other

Chinese cities as well as in Thailand

and Singapore.

Created in 1868 and renovated in

2004, ‘Les Thermes de Spa’ is a

reputed thermal centre located on

the top of a hill and presenting a nice

view over the town. The in- and

outdoor 800m² relaxing pools, with

water at 32°C coming from the spring

“Clémentine”, have hydro massage

water-jets, whirlpool baths and

Jacuzzis ideal for relaxation. In

addition to the fit and relaxation

centre having a set of hammams

(Turkish bath), saunas and refreshing

Wallonia counts other places

renowned for their thermal benefits.

Chaudfontaine for example, situated

at 30km from Spa, also has mineral

water springs. The water is filtered

through limestone; protected by

strata of shale, forming a closed

circuit 1,600 m underground, which

give it its unique qualities. It travels

more than 60 years around the

underground circuit before it bubbles

to the surface at 37°C, perfectly

bambalanced in calcium, magnesium

and fluorine.

Set in the middle of a

huge wooded park in

the Vesdre valley,

the ‘Château des Thermes’, fed

directly by the spring water, is a

perfect spot to rest, relax and make

the most of nature’s benefits. It

offers an outdoor pool equipped with

hydrojets, an indoor pool, 3 saunas, a

Turkish bath, relaxation rooms and

zen garden. The ‘Chateau des

Thermes’ also propose a range of

massages and body/facial treatments

Next to the commercialization for

drinking, Chaudfontaine water is also

used for its thermal properties.

and Meyskens, for examples, are

companies specialized in the

production and distribution of raw

material intended for the Belgian and

world export market.

While Axo industry is particularly

active with the production of a wide

range of pharmaceutical and

parapharmaceutical raw material,

Lubrizol focuses on cosmetics and

personal care and Meyskens on

botanical raw materials and

derivatives like herbs, dietetic teas,

essential oil...

ChemCom and Firmenich Belgium

are dedicated to the research of

products and tools relevant to

chemosensory technologies: taste,

olfaction and other sensory

modalities.

Their capabilities concern the

flavours & fragrances, cosmetic, food,

agricultural, pharmaceutical and

biomedical industries. ChemCom’s

Biercée near the French border

lotion, cream with added vitamin,

peeling, mask, moisturizer, massage

oil…); perfumes and comfort

products for the sportsmen/women

(private label) such as anti-cramps

gel, relaxing gel, natural energy drink,

anti-inflammation gel…; the company

also rent its services to brands that

are carefully crafted and slowly

matured. Today the

“Parfums Guy Delforge” company

boasts more than 250 up-market

products. And many more projects

are on the way. The company has

already won several medals and

awards. The Carré Blanc perfume, for

example, received two Gold Medals:

the first one in London in 1989 during

a World Quality Selection and the

second one in 1994 in Paris.

The firm “Jo Kemby Ltd.”, founded in

2008 by Camille Del Bianco and based

in London, appointed a Belgian and a

British designers, Renaud and

Jonathan, to create a range of

unusual perfumes and cosmetics for

men and women. They developed an

eccentric, chaotic, punk and

unconventional brand: POGOPOGO.

They invented 2 perfumes, Classic

Collection &

Limited Edition:

two daring

flavours: a fresh

one and the

other one is

sweeter. One

exclusively for men and the other one

is for both men and women. Next to

the perfumes, Benoît Magis, a self-

taught hair stylist created a range of

hair gels. With attractive and

colourful jugs and an unctuous stuff,

these professional

products give a

texture and a

shape to

straightened and distorted hairstyle

in order to get unexpected looks.

The company has

also an evolved

partnership with the

range ICE-Watch: a

numbered series of

colourful watches is

born!
