We suggest that you either print and place into plastic name badges (optional), laminate and punch a hole and use a lanyard to wear around the neck (optional) – or the most economical and trouble-free way is to adhere fabric-safe adhesive (i.e. double-sided Scotch tape) to the back once they are printed.

HOST DIRECTIVES Get ready for an awesome costume party with your purchase of the wacky pumpkin town panic game from MyMysteryParty.com! This party is an entertaining and comical mystery where the players act the roles of hilarious personalities while sleuthing the intriguing story line. This is an excellent choice for your next get together during the Halloween season–or anytime you want to dress up and have fun! The story is set in a Halloween-inspired town called Pumpkin Town. The event location in the story line is in the community recreation center outside of the town’s pumpkin patch, but you can host it at any location such as a home living room, backyard (weather permitting), castle, hotel ballroom, hotel suite, recreation center room, etc. The party can be set in any space—all you need is Halloween décor (i.e. spooky cobwebs, pumpkins, lighting, etc.) and voila—you’re ready to go! The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues and slip them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to choose different colored envelopes for each round. We offer envelope packs with four different colors for sale on the My Mystery Party website in the Party Props section (aka: Prop Emporium). A more economical method is to scroll the clue cards and secure with a ribbon—we show you how to do this on our How to Host video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NuOoOQf_dQ Make sure to read these host instructions for each round prior to the party to ensure you have everything in place for the big day! Please note - the host instructions for each round do not disclose who the thief is, but do not read nor even look at (because you may read by accident) the Round Three cards if you want to keep the thief a surprise. Have someone else prepare round two and three if you absolutely don’t want to know who the thief is, or for another solution to this…..see below…. UPGRADE TO A PARTY READY PACK: For a complete surprise, you can elect to upgrade this download to the pre-printed ‘party ready’ party pack option from the MyMysteryParty.com site. The upgrade is located in our side navigation bar and says ‘upgrade your download to a boxed set.’ This option will include the clues in labeled envelopes and the rest of prepared game documents –‘ready to go’ (this is an additional charge since we utilize our paper, ink, envelopes, labor, etc.). This upgrade removes the original price of the download and charges you the difference between the party ready pack and download version of the game. For example, if the Party Ready Pack is $120, and you have already purchased the download for $35, the upgrade would cost $85—thereby removing the price you have already paid for the game. Let our staff take care of preparing this kit for you – you’ll be glad you did! OPTIONAL PROPS: We also offer mystery props on the My Mystery Party site in the Prop Emporium including authentic crime scene barrier tape, crime scene balloons, Bic mystery investigation pens, crime scene balloons, envelopes, etc. These are all optional but are fun enhancements to your night/day of mystery. During the party, your job as the host is to ensure that the envelopes are given to the guests at the appropriate times and most of all—you and your guests are having a blast! OPTIONAL PLAYERS: There are 7 unique optional players in this game. They can be played in any combination that you wish—or if you do not have guests for the 7 optional characters, simply omit the clue cards of these guests—it will not affect your mystery. However, the optional players, when played, will not be aware they were optional to the story line. As you can see in the clue cards (if you view them), the optional players have the same type of materials as the required players and again–they’ll never realize during game play they were optional to your game.

HOST PLAYING A CHARACTER ROLE: We definitely encourage our hosts to play along! Choose any character you wish to play. Everyone should have fun – especially you – you’re doing all the hard work! If you do not want to know the solution, do not view the final round of clues. If you want to avoid being the thief, simply choose an optional player to play. For a complete surprise, get a party ready pack upgrade as discussed previously and the clue cards will come to you, ready to go! OPTIONAL PUMPKIN CONTESTS: If you wish, before the party, you can ask your guests to try and find the largest pumpkin in town and bring it with them to the party and then any time during the game, you can judge the pumpkins to determine whose is the largest. A prize can be given to the winner (optional). You can place these pumpkins as your guests arrive on your party display table (see Round One Instructions) and use these for the pumpkin carving contest in Round Two if you’d like. By no means is this required - both the Giant Pumpkin Contest and the Pumpkin Carving contest are in the storyline, but neither are required to be held during the party. If you choose to do this, slip a note in the pre-game task envelopes if you are going to deliver prior to the party. Or, you can slip a note with your party invitations as well.

THE GAME IS ORGANIZED INTO FOUR ROUNDS AND IS STRUCTURED AS FOLLOWS: OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS: these optional pre-game task sheets are to be delivered to each guest before the party or give them to the guests as they arrive. All pre-game materials are optional and do not alter the mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These tasks are not vital to solving the mystery and omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way. ROUND ONE: Deliver these clues as your guests arrive. You can serve appetizers and cocktails for adults. ROUND TWO: Deliver these clues while you serve dinner (optional) to your guests. SOLUTION ROUND THREE: Deliver these clues with coffee/hot cocoa and dessert (again, it’s optional to serve dessert)

Note: you do NOT have to serve dinner/dessert, this is only suggested and the instructions tell you ‘when’ to serve it and what to do around the time you serve it. You can simply skip both without a problem and just serve snacks/appetizers the entire time. However, please don’t have a party without offering some type of food—even if it’s just snacks. Hungry guests are unhappy guests!

INVITES & OPTIONAL PRE-GAME

INVITING GUESTS: Before the party, encourage your guests to view the Your Mystery Party —

YourMysteryParty.com/pumpkinpanic guest website or use the free printable My Mystery Party invitations as they have the character descriptions included. This way, before the party, they can get familiar with the other characters that will be at the party, watch the game trailer, and more! There are also hidden/subtle hints about characters throughout the page so those guests who choose to be ‘super sleuths’ can spend some time studying the Your Mystery Party site prior to the party.

We also sell printed invitations with gold, metallic envelopes on our site. These can be located in the prop emporium on the MyMysteryParty.com site. If you are using an expansion pack, you’ll need to go to the Your Mystery Party site appropriate for your game, as these pages will include the expansion pack players. These site addresses are given to you in the expansion pack files and on the expansion pack site. The free, downloadable invitations are located on the item page where you first purchased this game. Scroll to the middle of the page and click on the link that says ‘free, downloadable invitation’ to download the pdf file. Fill in your information in the text fields, print, and send to your guests. If you have Adobe Acrobat, you can save to your hard drive and email these invites to your guests to save paper costs. You will need to enter your information in the text field and save one on your hard drive for each player, changing the character to be played on each invitation. Alternatively, either email this link or use any eVite site and simply include the link to the Your Mystery Party guest invite site at YourMysteryParty.com/pumpkinpanic (or /pumpkin if you are using the expansion pack.). There are no spoilers on this page for your guests. Using the Your Mystery Party guest pregame site has shown to increase attendance at your party, as guests get excited for your upcoming event!

ROUND ONE—IT’S PARTY TIME! DÉCOR: Create an eerie Halloween ambiance by using spider webs, LED lighting on candelabras, orange and black balloons, and of course, don’t forget the pumpkins (Jack-O-Lanterns)! Also, take a look at our Pinterest Page (MyMysteryParty) for some DIY options. GUEST ARRIVAL: Appetizers can be served (optional-cocktails for legal-aged adults). The guests’ instructions and the character descriptions should be available for the guests to review. You can formally go over the instructions once everyone arrives. As an alternative, creatively display the clue-containing envelopes on a table for the guests to locate their own character names but don’t allow them to take clue cards from future rounds! Don’t forget to take both individual pictures of your guests and a group picture once everyone arrives - they’ll all want copies of these! A great party souvenir is to print these pictures during the party on photo paper and slip into creatively designed frames (you can make them out of cardboard or purchase actual frames). BONUS ACTIVITIES: at any time during your party, you can insert a bonus activity (see bonus activity instructions for more details). You can play before, during or after any round. The key to keeping the mystery momentum is to tell the guests to remain in their character at all times. Breaking character will disrupt the flow of the mystery game’s story line, so it is very important. Bonus activities provide a temporary distraction and keep the energy level high and excitement flowing. Even if you think your guests aren’t the party game types, you should at least try to play one—you’ll be surprised how much they get into it and have a blast.

ROUND TWO—DINNER HOUR PRE-ROUND TWO: You can serve dinner (dinner is optional). You can simply take a break and eat dinner but tell your guests to remain in character! They are allowed to mingle / talk about things during this time, but since each will likely sit with a subsection of the group, it will be limiting – and that is all right – you’ll give time for everybody to mingle once the official round begins. You can pass out their clue cards before/after dinner – it won’t make a difference.

ROUND THREE—solution round

OPTIONAL ACCUSATIONS: after you collect the mystery investigation sheets, allow the guests to one-by-one accuse who they believe the thief is and how they did it. Instruct them to also tell the group their guess of the thief’s motive. If you are having an awards ceremony using the awards certificates available on the My Mystery Party site in the mystery props section, you can use this round as the final decision maker on the best actor/actress award. FINAL SOLUTIONS: After the accusation round, pass out the round three envelopes to your guests and have them sit in a circle or semi-circle in order to be able to see guests as they read their solution cards one at a time to the group. If you are in a large ballroom / outdoor patio with a microphone and stage/podium – have each guest with a solution card come to the front of the space and use the microphone to reveal their solution (you can also do it this way for the accusation round if you so choose). At this time, you can serve the optional dessert and coffee (or hot cocoa/ hot apple cider/ after dinner cocktails). If this is a birthday party – bring out the cake! Instruct the guests to stand up in front of the group and read (act out) their final solution round card one at a time in the exact order that is directed by the solution round cards. *If you are in a time crunch, have only the required players (#1 - #8) read their solution cards to the group (see below). *Major time crunch, have only the murderer read their solution.

FULL INSTRUCTIONS IN THE PURCHASED GAME

OPTIONAL AWARD CEREMONY: After the mystery is finished and the thief has confessed, you can host an optional award ceremony. My Mystery Party has many award certificates that you can instantly download, or we can print them for you and ship them to you – your choice! You can also purchase trophies, plaques, ribbons, etc. to award your guests with – the sky is the limit! It will be up to you who will receive each award. Many people may guess the thief correctly, but you can ‘secretly’ determine the winner by whoever turns in their guess first. Again, as stated above: don’t tell them you’re doing this, however, or you’ll have a bunch of rushed guesses! You want your guests to sleuth and have fun.

HELPFUL HINTS ON HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY PARTY

GUEST INSTRUCTIONS You’ve been assigned a character, and you’ve come to the party dressed in the most awesome costume and have been told to play your role. Now, what? The mystery is separated into three main rounds of party play. During the party, you will receive an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The clues for the characters at the party provide everything that you need to solve the mystery. However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right questions and pay close attention to everyone’s clues to get the whole picture of what has happened.

FULL INSTRUCTIONS IN THE PURCHASED GAME

From this point forward, you are to remain in character until the mystery is solved. If you are playing an obnoxious horse groomer riddled with scandals—that is who you are until the end! Undoubtedly, your host cast you into a character that you are comfortable playing. Some characters are designed to be played more reserved than other characters. Feel free to play your role in any manner that you feel comfortable. Embellish your character’s personality if you would like. However, if you are feeling more reserved tonight, you can opt to allow the other guests to approach you, or you can simply listen in on others’ conversations to get your information.

Page 16: The Wacky Pumpkin Town Panic - A Hilarious Halloween ... · hilarious personalities while sleuthing the intriguing story line. This is an excellent choice for your next get together

OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS The following tasks are completely optional and exclusion of them does not alter the mystery in any way. However, it does lead to pre-game build up and excitement! Cut the task strips (below) out and slip them into envelopes and send about 1 week prior to the party. Be sure to fill in your guests’ preferred contact information on the task slips so they will be able to contact each other. The usual method of contact is via email. Write Not Applicable / NA on contact info blanks for characters that will not be played in your game. If you are using an expanded team with Robin Mood, there are two additional cards for the Happy Team – make as many copies of these cards you need for your group.

Character names are removed to minimize

spoilers.

Each player in the game (both required

and optional) will have a pregame task

card.

Character J OPTIONAL - for some pre-party fun, you can contact (email, phone, etc.) the following guests in the week leading up to the party: Contact the guest playing Character K and ask if you can assist with superhero rounds on the streets one night. S/he can do the healing and you can cheer people up when they are sad. You two would be like a Batman & Robin – a dynamic duo! (Contact info :_____________________________) Contact the guest playing Character M and ask if you can have your clown tricycle back. S/he took it and gave it to the little girl down the street. S/he should make it right and tell the girl’s parents what s/he did and get your tricycle back. You need it for your work! You’re the only clown in the circus without one! (Contact info :_____________________________) Contact the guest playing Character S and ask if she has discovered anything cool lately. (Contact info :_____________________________)

PLEASE NOTE: SKIPPING THESE TASKS WILL NOT ALTER ANYONE'S ABILITY TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY IN ANYWAY. HOWEVER, CONTACTING

OTHER GUESTS WILL LEAD TO EXCITEMENT ABOUT THE PARTY AND GET EVERYBODY PREPARED FOR HALLOWEEN FUN!

ROUND ONE CLUES – CUT OUT, SLIP INTO ENVELOPES AND LABEL.

CHARACTER H– ROUND ONE CLUES TO REVEAL DURING THIS ROUND

During this round, mingle with other guests to discuss the following information with whomever you choose. If any of the following guests are not present, disregard the clue: • You haven’t made any discoveries lately. However,

you are enticed by this Racemes Relic. Anything that old might have some form of ancient DNA inside - possibly if there were an ancient mosquito trapped inside somehow. You haven’t been able to tell for certain, but you believe there is a form of amber behind the jewels and amber often traps insects inside. You’d love to take this relic to your laboratory to analyze it!

• Talk to Character S about how you’d like to analyze the relic before anyone touches it again.

• Find out who all is going to participate in the Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest this year.

• Ask around to see if Character B has stolen any property from anyone else. S/he stole your jet ski and gave it to an old man down the street. It didn’t make any sense since the old man can’t swim and definitely can’t ride a jet ski! You are all about giving back to the community…but not in ways that don’t make sense!

PERSONAL CLUES TO CONCEAL • You want that Racemes Relic before anyone

contaminates it any further. You want to check it out to see if there are sources of DNA inside! You haven’t been able to get a grant for years because you haven’t discovered anything and this is your chance!

• You lack a shred of common sense outside of science.

Each player in the game (both required

and optional) will have a round one

clue card. DO NOT READ IF YOU WISH TO PREVENT SPOILERS

ROUND ONE: PRINT AND CUT OUT THE RACEMES RELIC AND PLACE IN JOKEY JOKERTON’S CLUE CARD. In the story, while Jokey was out selecting a pumpkin for the carving contest before the celebration, s/he uncovered this item

buried in the Pumpkin Town Pumpkin Patch. As an alternative, instead of using the paper cut-out above, you can purchase any type of antique-looking costume jewelry brooch and hand it to Jokey Jokerton along with the envelope for

round one (or if it fits inside, slip into the envelope).

ROUND TWO CLUES – CUT OUT, SLIP INTO ENVELOPES AND LABEL.

Personal Clues: • Tell Character K that you’d like to sign up for the

lecture series at the Pumpkin Town College about self-esteem. You need it.

• Try to ask Character S if s/he is the thief. You think s/he is out of control.

• Sherman Forest Code states that Character E must steal from the rich and give to the needy. The money from selling the relic certainly could be used by someone in need!

• Ask Character U if it is true that s/he is losing her job as a professor. Ask why.

Evidence: • The Racemes Relic was definitely on the table in

the center of the room immediately before the lights went out.

• Character G turned the lights back on using the western wall light switch. Some people were in the same location and others had moved around.

• You were speaking to Character I and Character X when the lights went off.

• You noticed that CharacterC was also in the SE corner of the room before the lights went out. S/he was closer to the southern door, however, when the lights came back on.

When it is your turn, say the following to the group: "Well, I admit I was going to take the relic as a practical joke and tape it to the ceiling & watch everyone panic and see who noticed it first. Example Time Line The game can be shortened by excluding the optional activities, or lengthened by adding

more bonus games. 7:00 PM: Guests arrive, have their pictures made (optional) and receive a refreshment / cocktail for adults. The guests will view the guest instructions and character list while they wait for everybody to arrive. The host should build in at least a 10 minute cushion for guests to arrive late. Hey, it happens. 7:10 PM: The host reads the guest instructions to the group. It is optional to have each guest introduce their character in front of the group. Play the video game trailer on Your Mystery Party for your game &/or read the game synopsis from Your Mystery Party to the group to give the premise. 7:20 PM: The Round One envelopes are handed out and the game begins. The guests mingle and reveal the clues on their clue cards. It’s just like a normal party, but the guests remain in character and gossip about each other’s characters. The motives & story lines will start to unveil. 7:50 PM: An optional bonus game is played. Bonus activities keep the energy flowing and the guests have a blast. They are optional, but highly suggested. The players must remain in character. 8:05 PM: Optional to serve dinner. Dinner can be sit down or buffet – or even as simple as a pizza that’s delivered! You can also just serve appetizers/snacks during the party. 8:35 PM: The Round Two envelopes are handed out to the guests and the thievery is unveiled! 8:50 PM: There are announcements made and the host passes out the investigation sheets to the players. The guests interrogate each other to determine whodunit. The full story is in the player clue cards, but the guests will have to be skilled at asking the right questions of each other, etc. 9:10 PM: Optional accusation round – the guests can take turns formally accusing who they think did it, and why. You’ll be surprised at how everybody’s inner actor will surface during this activity. 9:25 PM: Dessert and coffee (optional) are served and the Round Three envelopes are handed out to the guests. The guests sit in a circle and one-by-one, the solutions are revealed by each of the guests and the thief will confess at the conclusion of the round. The thief is notified in their round three solution card that they are the thief. They will not know or have any advantage over anybody of knowing whodunit before this round. *If you do not opt to have the optional players read their final solutions in front of the group, give them a few minutes to mingle and share their solutions. 9:50 PM: An optional bonus game is played. 10:10 PM: An optional award ceremony. My Mystery Party has award certificates of all kinds that you can choose from in the Prop Emporium. The host can determine who receives the awards while the bonus game is being played. Some awards are traditional and some are snarky but hilarious! 10:30 PM: Game over!
