Community Recreation Program Fall & Winter 2012-132

It may still feel like summertime, but before we know it, the leaves will be changing and a fall chill will be in the air. Fall is a time of change, and it’s a wonderful time to try something new at The W. We hope you’ve enjoyed a few great months of warm-weather activity, relaxation, and recreation and have taken advantage of all the opportunities offered for people of all ages here at The W. I’ve enjoyed walking around the facility this summer seeing kids learning tennis, baseball, basketball, and tumbling skills and adults participating in the great classes offered by our fitness instructors. It’s also been a joy observing people of all ages enjoying the pool and the variety of aquatics activities available, as well as visiting with some of our senior members at the Zesty Orange after their morning walk in the Fieldhouse. There really is a place for everyone at The W.

In the following pages of our brochure, we hope you find many programs, classes, and other opportunities that spark your interest or the interest of someone in your family to get active and try something new at The W. I want to encourage you to make this the year you commit to making a change. Go outside your comfort zone and participate in something different, something you’ve always wanted to try, something you never thought you could do. And do it with a friend by encouraging someone to make a change with you! Let a personal trainer design a workout tailored to your own fitness goals. Challenge yourself by climbing the many courses mapped out on the rock wall or dance your way to fitness through the steps of a Zumba class. Then relax your body and mind with a massage—and don’t forget to pick up gift certificates for your friends and family!

If you are currently a member, tell someone about all the great opportunities and first-class facilities available at The W — from aquatics to art and courts to childcare. There really is a place for everyone of all ages at The W. If you are not a member, now is a great time to sign up for a single or family membership and begin to make a change in your own fitness as well as the fitness of your entire family. As a former elementary and high school physical educator, I’m passionate about the importance of developing lifelong healthy habits. I’ve seen firsthand the need for all of us, no matter what our age, to find fun, enjoyable ways to get moving and take care of our bodies.

Make sure to visit www.The-W.org to check out and register for all the fall and winter offerings we have available for you and your family. I look forward to seeing you around The W.

Special Health and Wellness ProgramsSurvivor careAccording to the American Cancer Society, nearly 1.3 million Americans will be diagnosed this year with cancer, the nation’s second-leading killer. The Survivor Care program will provide exercise for cancer patients, using minimal strength conditioning combined with flexibility training and low-impact aerobic exercise. Depending on chemotherapy or radiation schedules, each patient’s workout may include daily walks, use of rubber tubing for resistance training, fitness balls, or dumbbells.

Heart HappyThe No. 1 killer in the United States is cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association. More than 60 million Americans are recovering from a stroke or heart failure or suffer from high blood pressure, heart defects, hardening of the arteries, or other circulatory diseases. Depending on a cardiac patient’s specific situation, Heart Happy can assist with the bridge from the clinical setting to mainstream workouts. Research shows that strength workouts help patients increase stamina for daily routines and reduce day-to-day demands on the heart.

Wheel of lifeSpending long hours in a wheelchair can be uncomfortable and lead to uneasiness. Keeping the body moving as much as possible in a wheelchair should be a regular part of a daily fitness program. Regular wheelchair exercise will help increase strength and flexibility, improve mobility, strengthen the heart and lungs, and help control weight.

TRX“A year ago, with encouragement from my daughter-in-law and the staff at Wartburg, I started the TRX class at the W. It was hard work, but the staff, fellow classmates, and instructors were very good at explaining and teaching the techniques of TRX. They all helped me to want to come back each day. They would not let me quit, even when I tried to tell them I was old. I was the oldest person in the class! As I continued to participate in class, I started seeing results in weight loss and was starting to feel stronger. I have continued to be in classes at The W for over a year and exercise has become a part of my daily activity. I truly believe there is a class for everyone, regardless of age or ability. “ — Barb Tatroe

Trainers & Staff“From pills to shakes to diet meals and programs, we’ve tried nearly everything. We have lost and gained weight throughout the years until we realized tricks and gimmicks weren’t going to help keep the weight off. By this time it wasn’t just about looking better, it was about feeling better. We needed a lifestyle change and that’s where The W comes in. Our experience at The W so far has been amazing! The entire staff has been excellent at supporting us and being very helpful. Our direct trainers were unbelievably supportive and never stopped encouraging us. Beyond our personal trainers, other trainers and even other W members have rallied behind us and inspired us to do better and work harder. Every person on the staff, whether trainer or not, has been friendly and helpful.” — Kelli and Charles Drape

Member Profile — darrin SiefkenIn six months of fitness classes at The W, I have lost 45 pounds, dropped 4 inches off my waist, and have a ton of energy. The daily backache and headaches are gone, and I feel awesome. Stress levels have been reduced dramatically as well.

I was not impressed with myself on the first day of Boot Camp—I was actually embarrassed that I couldn’t even do all of the activities/tests. With each new day of working out, I gained more endurance, started shedding the weight, and enjoyed working out at The W. The fitness instructors have been very accommodating and motivating through the process. Working out has become a part of what I enjoy doing, and I plan to keep it up. I don’t want to go back to the shape I was in before.

I also changed my diet and eating habits. I started to eat more chicken, more fish, more veggies, more fruit, and less red meat. I ate smaller portions and made dramatic changes to my snacking by having a 100-calorie snack mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and later in the evening. I got rid of most of the processed food and sweets in my diet as well as the daily large bowl of ice cream. There are times when I still eat poorly, but it is done in moderation.

I thought changing diet would be the hardest part of losing weight, and at times it has been difficult to stay on track, but overall it has been easier as time goes on. It becomes a habit and a part of your normal routine. The W provides a sample menu and diet to help get you started. You need a support base to work out and eat healthier. When I started the classes, I had a buddy who worked out with me, and we were able to help push each other and keep each other on track to lose weight and show up to class. My wife supported me and made sure that our house was stocked with appropriate food choices, so there was little or no temptation.

I have always known that you need to exercise and eat healthier. When I got serious about making changes to my life and sticking to it, I finally got what people have been saying for a long time. I used to think that I didn’t have the time to work out. You have to make the time, and I now feel like I have more energy to be more productive.

I hope my story will encourage others to do the same thing and get active and healthy at The W. Darrin Siefken, ownerCrawDaddy Outdoors
