SOI NEWS AND NOTES

05/17/16 5th Grade Capstone Carnival 5th grade parents and friends please join us on the afternoon of May 17th for the 5th grade Capstone Carnival. The Laws of Motion and standard Economics will be highlighted by our hard working 5th grade teams. More specific information will be coming home with your stu-dent in the near future. All students will go to this event, but only 5th graders are presenting.

05/18/16 Musical Extravaganza Our Spring Concert is Wednesday at North at 7:00. Please arrive by 6:30 so we can get the kids lined up and organized so we can start on time. The concert will be short and sweet - about 25 minutes. Also, can I get a parent volunteer to videotape the performance? If you volunteer, don’t be afraid to move around with your camera to get some close up shots of the kids and digital scenery. I would like to post the video on our district’s website and do something extra special with it as well. Thanks in advance to whoever takes me up on the offer. One last thing...ask your child about building a musical instrument. We have been talking about it in class a lot lately. Many students have made them, but we could use more. They will play them in the perfor-mance Wednesday night. There is a link on Google Classroom that provides blueprints for different kinds of instruments from easy to advanced.

05/19/16 Drama Club Presentation of

Snow White

The W-E SOI Drama club, led by Mrs. Myers, will have two performances of

Snow White on May 19th. The performances will be at SOI at 5:00 pm and

6:30 pm. We hope you can join us for this event. The students have

worked for weeks and are excited to perform for a live audience!

This week 3rd graders worked on our Veggie U experiments. We observed radish seeds, researched what were optimal growing mediums and conditions, and looked closely at food groups, nutrition and balancing our energy. In ELA we studied theme, predictions, characteristics of myths/drama, common root words, adjectives and adverbs. We also continue to organize our research and improve on our note taking expertise. We are finalizing our product designs for the 3rd Grade Market coming up in a few days. Collaboration is not easy, but the teams are learning valuable lessons and experience in this unit on economy, creativity, critical thinking, and commu-nication. This should be the best 3rd Grade Market ever!

4th grade Weekly Update

We have been very busy this week working on making our products to sell for Business Day on May 23rd. Parents are invited to attend from 1:30-2:15 pm. Stu-dents are learning that entrepreneurship is hard work! They have been making products, designing business banners, and creating commercials. Thank you for sending in all the supplies to make this project possible! We will be finishing off The Lemonade War next week. Students are enjoying making connections between the characters in the book and their own business-es. Students started a geometry project on Friday. They are working to create a sum-mer scene of their choice using a variety of materials while incorporating ele-ments of geometry in their design. We can’t wait to see the finished products!

5th grade Weekly Update

This has been a busy week here for our creative minds! The students are using their knowledge of Newton’s Laws to build their part in our capstone project. Whether it be an arcade game, putt-putt hole or an amusement park ride, these students are really working hard to show off their knowledge! Thank you parents for all the boxes and recyclables throughout the year! They are definitely being put to use! In ELA, the students are challenged to rewrite part of the Toothpaste Millionaire in drama form. The students have learned how poetry, prose and drama can all tell a similar story, but have different elements. We are hoping to perform the play chapter by chapter after each section is written in drama form! We would love for you to come visit our carnival next week! On Tuesday, May 17th, from 1:30-2:30 pm, we will have an open house for parents. You may come in and play the games, view the model of the rides and try out our putt-putt holes! Feel free to sign your child out at 2:30 if you want to take your child home at the end.

FAB LAB / ART

ART — Students are finishing their self portraits this week. Ask them if they have the portrait in their google drive! FAB LAB — Fifth graders are so busy using all the equipment to create their board games. Fourth graders are using the the equipment to create items for their SOI economy.

I am very proud to report that every student in all 3 grade levels completed their 1 ½ mile run/walk this year. This activity is a 3 year lead-up to my goal in having the students complete a 5k race/walk to promote lifelong fitness. I have chal-lenged the students to start some kind of fitness plan this summer to be ready in the fall to adjust to a 2 mile event.

This week the students also got the chance to practice some of the events they will be seeing during Field Day on the 24th. Reminder: If you are interested in helping out this year please e-mail [email protected]. Field Day will be on Tuesday, May 24th, from 12:15-2:30. I still have openings for team helpers to assist with games and the popsicle stand. Thanks for your help on this fun day!
