TNAGD Participates in ASDA Fair

I hope the beginning of summer is finding everyone in health and prosperity. The economy is continuing to improve, and

most dental practices are trending in a more stable and positive direction. Many of us have set aside time for family activities and/or educational opportunities. My clan seems to recognize that CE and vacation time are first cousins.

The Academy is continuing to work hard for its members. TN will have three dele-gates conducting business as members of the House of Delegates in San Francisco during the AGD Annual Session June 18-21. Drs. Ron Bell, Chris Moore, and I have participat-ed in two events this year engaging the U.T. Memphis dental students. Our lunch-and-learn along with the ASDA Vendor Fair gave us a welcomed confidence in the next gen-eration of dental practitioners. The Board of Director’s support of student development is certainly a worthy investment in and for the future of the Academy. Dr. Keith Gilmore, legislative chair, continues to monitor and coordinate legislative actions along with our lobbyist Mark Greene. Our Regional Direc-tor and board member Richard Dycus also serves as the chair of the TDA Governmental Affairs Committee. These individuals pro-

vide great insight and service to the TN AGD and its membership.

Consistent with our core commitment to quality continuing education, the TN AGD has developed several learning opportunities this year. We have been at the forefront of the facial esthetic movement by sponsoring three Botox and Dermal Filler courses taught by a nationally recognized speaker Dr. Gigi Meinecke. Co-sponsorship of a 5 day com-prehensive Forensic Odontology course at the UT Medical Center in Knoxville is planned in August. DOCS has also asked us to co-sponsor a three day course held in Memphis during the month of August. Last but not least is the TN Annual Meeting in Pigeon Forge on July 10-11. This seminar offers a participation component in restorative dentistry.

Thanks to the efforts of dedicated and commit-ted TN AGD dentists we can continue to bring opportunity and value to our general mem-bership. Thanks for allowing me and the other board members to serve your interests.

Michael W. King, DDS, MAGDPresident, TN AGD

Historic Central Station was the setting on April 30th for the annual UT Dental ASDA Vendor Fair. Over three hundred dental students visited with various exhibitors as they took a break from the routine of dental school life. Drs. Michael King, Ron Bell, and Chris Moore spent the evening engaging our young colleagues as to the benefits of organized dentistry and more specifically how AGD membership can benefit them. They were very attentive to what the AGD was doing in Advocacy and in helping them continue their learning experiences fol-lowing graduation. Several students completed applications for membership which will help them stay informed of issues effecting our profession through AGD publications and also help them gain CE hours as a student that will go toward their Fellowship Award.

Register now and beat the summer heat. This will be a meeting you won’t want to miss! Bring the whole family and join us in the beautiful Smoky Mountains for 2 days of exceptional continuing education featuring

Commercial lease consultants Dale Willerton and Jeff Grandfield offer helpful insight on what you should consider before you decide whether to buy or lease dental practice property. This article includes the pros of and cons of both property options. When it comes to housing your dental practice, the question is: Do you lease or purchase commercial property? Before you decide, it’s important to consider the benefits and disadvantages associated with each option. Here are just a few:Buying a PropertyPros:• Ownership: You eventually will pay off a mort gage, whereas lease payments are forever.• Equity: Your equity in your property typically will increase over time.• Tax deductions: You may be able to write off the interest of your mortgage as a business expense.

Cons:• Responsibility: You remain responsible for any repairs to the property.• Upfront costs: You probably will pay a 20 to 35 percent deposit.• Space limitations: You could outgrow your space or find out that you purchased too much space.

Leasing a SpacePros:• Freeing up working capital: Leasing will free up funds for practice needs and improvements.• Time: You won’t have to address ownership issues like maintenance and snow removal.• Relocation: You will be able to relocate on short notice.

Cons: • Variable costs: You may be susceptible to rental increases.• Lack of equity: You may lack the necessary property equity that banks look for when determining suit ability for loans. • Customer benefits: You may have less control over some customer perks like parking.

There are benefits and disadvantages to both buying and renting. Let your practice goals drive your decision. For more information on buying and leasing practice buildings, check out the February 2015 issue of AGD Impact
